Hannah Arendt
An Introduction John McGowan Hannah Arendt was one of this century's leading political theorists and most controversial public intellectuals. Her work challenges received opinions about politics and cherished conceptions of modernity. Firmly locating Arendt's ideas in the context of our times, John McGowan here offers a clear, concise overview of Arendt's work and its continuing importance. The book is organized around three central Arendtian themes: the unfolding of identity through political action, the modern assault on a richly pluralistic world, and the effort to comprehend evil. Arendt was both a commentator on the events of her time (from totalitarianism and the Holocaust to the Vietnam War) and a sophisticated political theorist. McGowan lucidly explains the theoretical and philosophical convictions that stood behind her variousand often controversialinterventions in contemporary affairs. He explores the new ways of thinking that Arendt's work opens up regarding current issues such as human rights, identity politics, and participatory democracy. A concluding chapter connects Arendt's thought to contemporary social theory and today's political debates. Briskly written, McGowan's book serves Arendt's complex thought well while also rendering it accessible, demonstrating the unity of Arendt's career and the continuing relevance of her concerns.

Hannah Arendt
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Hannah Arendt October 14 December 4 ) was a German political theorist , often described as a philosopher , although she always refused that label. Born of secular Jewish parents in Hanover and raised in Königsberg (the hometown of her admired precursor Immanuel Kant ) and Berlin , Arendt studied philosophy with Martin Heidegger at the University of Marburg . She appears to have had a short romantic relationship with Heidegger, an entanglement that has occasioned much criticism. After breaking off the relationship, Arendt moved to Heidelberg to write a dissertation on the concept of love in the thought of St. Augustine , under the direction of the existentialist philosopher-psychologist Karl Jaspers The dissertation was published in 1929, but Arendt was prevented from habilitating (writing a second dissertation that would earn her permission to teach in German universities) in 1933 because she was a Jew, and thereupon fled Germany for Paris, where she met and befriended the literary critic and Marxian mystic Walter Benjamin . While in France, Arendt worked to support and aid Jewish refugees. However, with the

ARENDT HANNAH BRIGHTMAN, CAROL (ED.). Between Friends. The Correspondence of Hannah Arendt HANNAH ARENDT , LETTERS/BRIEFE, MARY MCCARTHY . Booknr. 18225. Aschheim, Steven E. (ed.): Hannah Arendt in Jerusalem. Berkeley : University of California Press, 2001. Paperback. xii, 428 p. ; 23 cm. Includes bibliographical references (p. 347-420) and index. For many years Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) has been the object of intense debate. After her bitter critiques of Zionism, which seemed to nullify her early involvement with that movement, and her extremely controversial Eichmann in Jerusalem (1963), Arendt became virtually a taboo figure in Israeli and Jewish circles. Challenging the "curse" of her own title, Hannah Arendt in Jerusalem carries the scholarly investigation of this much-discussed writer to the very place where her ideas have been most conspicuously ignored. Sometimes sympathetically, sometimes critically, these distinguished contributors reexamine the crucial aspects of Arendt 's life and thought: her complex identity as a German Jew; her commitment to and critique of Zionism and the state of Israel; her works on "totalitarianism," Nazism, and the Eichmann trial; her relationship to key twentieth-century intellectuals, from Gershom Scholem to Martin Heidegger; her intimate and tense connections to German culture; and her reworkings of political thought and philosophy in the light of the experience of the twentieth century. This reassessment of

Hannah Arendt
By Stephen J. Whitfield A political theorist with a flair for grand historical generalization, Hannah Arendt exhibited the conceptual brio of a cultivated intellectual, the conscientious learning of a German-trained scholar, and the undaunted spirit of an exile who had confronted some of the worst horrors of European tyranny. Her life was enriched by innovative thought and ennobled by friendship and love. Although her books addressed a general audience from the standpoint of disinterested universalism, Jewishness was an irrepressible feature of her experience as well as a condition that she never sought to repudiate. Hannah Arendt was born on October 14, 1906, in Hanover, in Wilhelmine Germany. Raised in Konigsberg, she was the only child of Paul and Martha (Cohn) Arendt, both of whom had grown up in Russian-Jewish homes headed by entrepreneurs. Arendt's childhood was punctuated with grief and terror. Her father, an engineer, died of paresis (syphilitic insanity) when Hannah was seven, and episodic battles between Russian and German armies were fought near their home soon thereafter. Her mother married Martin Beerwald in 1920, providing Hannah with two older stepsisters, Eva and Clara Beerwald. After graduating from high school in Koenigsberg in 1924, Arendt began to study theology that fall with Rudolf Bultmann at the University of Marburg. Also on the faculty was the young philosopher Martin Heidegger, whose lectures, which would form the basis of

hannah arendt and the Meaning of Politics. Craig Calhoun and John McGowan, editors. Afterword by Martin Jay. hannah arendt and the Meaning of Politics cover.

Hannah Arendt and the Meaning of Politics Craig Calhoun and John McGowan, editors Afterword by Martin Jay Is politics really nothing more than power relations, competing interests and claims for recognition, conflicting assertions of "simple" truths? No thinker has argued more passionately against this narrow view than Hannah Arendt, and no one has more to say to those who bring questions of meaning, identity, value, and transcendence to our impoverished public life. This volume brings leading figures in philosophy, political theory, intellectual history, and literary theory into a dialogue about Arendt's work and its significance for today's fractious identity politics, public ethics, and civic life For each essayon the fate of politics in a postmodern, post-Marxist era; on the connection of nonfoundationalist ethics and epistemology to democracy; on the conditions conducive to a vital public sphere; on the recalcitrant problems of violence and evilthe volume includes extended responses, and a concluding essay by Martin Jay responding to all the others. Ranging from feminism to aesthetics to the discourse of democracy, the essays explore how an encounter with Arendt reconfigures, disrupts, and revitalizes what passes for public debate in our day. Together they forcefully demonstrate the power of Arendt's work as a splendid provocation and a living resource Contributors: Richard Bernstein, Anthony Cascardi, Susan Bickford, Kim Curtis, Lisa Disch, Nancy Fraser, Martin Jay, Steven Leonard, Kirstie McClure, Dana Villa, and Eli Zaretsky.
