Author : Thomas Aquinas, O.P. Dating : Thomas was born into a family of minor nobility in 1224/5. At age five, he was presented as an oblate to the monastery of Monte Cassino. While stdying in Naples (1239-1244), he joined the Dominicans. Thomas studied under Albert the Great first in Paris and then in Cologne. Thomas returned to Paris where he lectured on the Sentences from 1252 to 1256. He returned to Italy in 1259 where he taught in Dominican houses in Rome and Orvieto. Thomas returned to Paris where he taught from 1269 until 1272. From 1272 until his death in 1274, Thomas worked in Naples. He died on his way to the Council of Lyons. Works : Three recent lists of Thomas's works exist. They do not agree on the number of authentic works to be attributed to Thomas, the number ranging from 69 (Emery) to 90 (Weisheipl).
1) G. Emery, "Bref catalogue des oeruvres de Saint Thomas," in Jean-Pierre Torrell,
2) James Weisheipl, "A Breif Catalogue of Authentic Works," in Friar Thomas d'Aquin. His Life, Thought and Work (Doubleday: Garden City, N.Y., 1974), pp. 355-405.

143. The Thomistic Cosmological Argument
Summary and explanation of one of aquinas's arguments for the existence of God, by thomas Rauchenstein.
http://www.geocities.com/rauchens/aquin.htm
The Thomistic Cosmological Argument ~  For The Existence of God  ~ The overall logic of this a posteriori argument has its roots in the thinking of Thomas Aquinas, a Catholic theologian who lived in the 13th Century. A great portion of the argument can be stated as a series of trilemmas that are exhaustive of reality.
It should be noted that this form of cosmological argument is concerned with existence in esse. In other words, it is present (simultaneous) existence being discussed here, not causal regression into the past. The following chart illustrates a variation
of this form of cosmological argument : There is existence:
That there is existence is undeniable. For one must exist in order to deny that there is existence.  There is possible existence:
Reality can be exhaustively categorized into three types of being: impossible possible and necessary . An impossible being cannot exist because its attributes are logically contradictory. (i.e. square circles) A necessary being cannot not exist, it must exist. A possible being has the possibility for existence and non-existence.  To see why there are possible beings, one must understand what a necessary being would be, if , in fact, it did exist. Since it is impossible for a necessary being not to exist, it cannot have any potentiality with regard to existence. If it did, then its non-existence would be possible. But necessary existence cannot be this way. Thus, a necessary being can have no potentiality with regard to existence. Its existence is (1)

146. IQB: Aquinas And The Immaculate Conception
James Akin's explanation of thomas aquinas' views on the issue of Mary's sinlessness.
http://www.cin.org/users/james/questions/q052.htm
Q: In another question you said that St. Thomas Aquinas explained why Mary submitted to a Mosaic purification ritual even though she was sinless, something which you said he and virtually everyone in his day accepted. But I have heard a Protestant apologist repeatedly say that Aquinas rejected the Immaculate Conception. What's the deal? A: What the Protestant apologist said is a classic example of a half-truth. Evangelicals often use the fact that Aquinas (unlike others of his age) did not believe that Mary was entirely sanctified from the moment of her conception to imply that she committed actual, personal sinas Protestants assert. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Even though Aquinas did not claim that Mary was sanctified from the moment of her conception , he did claim that she was sanctified before her birth , and so never committed personal sin (for unborn children commit no personal sin; cf. Rom. 9:11). For a Protestant to knowingly push this claim is deceptive on three fronts: 1) It suggests that Aquinas's views ought to be held to (on those rare occasions) when he disagrees with what the Church has since established as true, but the views of no one theologian, even an Aquinas, may be held in preference to what the Church later establishes. Aquinas's views

152. My Second Non-Encounter With Anti-Catholic Apologist Matt Slick
He cannot stand on his own two feet orally. Come on sv st. Veronica and Dave who have you witnessed to orally on the streets?

My Second Non-Encounter With Anti-Catholic Apologist Matt Slick On 28 August 2003 I engaged in a more or less spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment "debate" (as others describe it; not me) with Calvinist apologist Matt Slick on PalTalk : an increasingly-popular Internet venue which allows people to talk (with a microphone) to others in the Internet room, much like a teleconference. I had been reluctant to do this and didn't have a microphone anyway, but I consented at the urging of my friend Diane Sellner, a passionately-committed Protestant who actually works for and with Matt on the CARM Protestant discussion boards (connected with Matt's own ministry), while I and my entire family were visiting her campsite where she had a computer with a remote Internet connection set up. The discussion was not recorded, so we are left with people's impressions of the nature and import of what occurred. I shall cite some comments made publicly on the CARM Catholic Discussion and Announcement Boards before I offered my own opinion, then my own lengthy summary and analysis, and subsequent comments and my responses. A while back, I participated in an equally frustrating and futile written exchange with Matt: "Apostate" Churches, Deceptive Catholics, and Desperate Judgment Day Pleas: My Non-Encounter With Protestant Apologist Matt Slick

155. Dialogue On How Catholics View Protestants
Dialogue on How Catholics View Protestants Dave Armstrong vs. Diane Sellner. Diane Sellner is an evangelical Protestant and a moderator
http://ic.net/~erasmus/RAZ160.HTM
Dialogue on How Catholics View Protestants Dave Armstrong vs. Diane Sellner Diane Sellner is an evangelical Protestant and a moderator on the large CARM Discussion boards, overseen by Protestant apologist Matt Slick. This is our discussion, substantially preserved in all its essentials, but edited for length and to reduce repetition in places. It took place on the CARM Catholic board. Her words will be in blue . My initial post ("Authentic Catholic Ecumenism Contra Diane S") can be found at: You regretfully misrepresent Catholic teaching once again, precisely as Matt does: The Catholics may officially teach that we are Christian, BUT, we then hear our churches are "defective", we don't know the fullness of Christ, . . . we are missing true "holiness" . . . We are separated brethren, and whatever according to your church. Depending on how you read Scripture, that pretty much QUESTIONS our salvation as one separated from the body of Christ, cannot be Christian, though you say we are Christian...... but is simply a politically correct way of saying you feel superior to all other Christians. That is also received as "uncharitable" as far as I am concerned. Where to start? Let me spell it out very specifically from Vatican II, which is binding on all Catholics. Note first that you also sweepingly accuse Catholics of equivocating and being deceptive in language, just as Matt does, by asserting that we supposedly claim you are Christians out of one side of the mouth, but deny it with the other side. This simply isn't true, and is also a highly offensive personal attack against virtually all orthodox Catholics on this board. You apparently think you possess some supernatural knowledge which enables you to read hearts and conclude that we "feel superior to all other Christians." Then you decide (based on your caricature of both our beliefs and our internal attitudes) that this is "uncharitable."
