Pange Lingua Gloriosi
The opening words of two hymns celebrating respectively the Passion and the Blessed Sacrament . The former, in unrhymed verse, is generally credited to St. Venantius Fortunatus (6 cent.), and the latter, in rhymed accentual rhythm, was composed by St. Thomas Aquinas (13 cent.). I. THE HYMN OF FORTUNATUS
Qualiter Redemptor orbis immolatus vicerit.
The stanza is thus seen to comprise three tetrameter trochaic catalectic verses. In the "Roman Breviary" the hymn is assigned to Passion Sunday and the ferial Offices following it down to and including Wednesday in Holy Week, and also to the feasts of the Finding of the Holy Cross, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Crown of Thorns, the Five Wounds. In this breviary use, the hymn is divided into two, the first five stanzas being said at Matins, the second five (beginning with the words "Lustra sex qui jam peregit") at Lauds; and each line is divided into two, forming a stanza of six lines, e. g.: Pange lingua gloriosi

Catena Aurea - St. Thomas Aquinas Patristic Commentary on the Gospels (Mirror of copy at abbey.apana.org.au in Australia) Matthew Mark Luke John The Catholic Encyclopedia (1913) says:
  • The "Catena Aurea' though not as original as his other writings, furnishes a striking proof of St. Thomas's prodigious memory and manifests an intimate acquaintance with the Fathers of the Church. The work contains a series of passages selected from the writings of the various Fathers, arranged in such order that the texts cited form a running commentary on the Gospels. The commentary on St. Matthew was dedicated to Urban IV. An English translation of the "Catena Aurea was edited by John Henry Newman (4 vols., Oxford 1841-1845; see Vaughan, op. cit., vol.II,) pp. 529 sqq..

Saint Thomas Aquinas
By Brother Thomas Mary, MICM I t is usually forgotten that Saint Thomas Aquinas is both a child and a Saint. One day Saint Thomas was reluctantly dragged to the court of King Louis the Ninth of France, to attend a banquet. When they entered Paris someone showed him from a hill the magnificence of the City, saying: "How wonderful it must be to own all this." Saint Thomas only muttered : " I would rather have that Chrysostom manuscript I can't get hold of." They finally got Saint Thomas seated at his place in the royal banquet Hall. It was the apex of the age of chivalry, and the great hall was jammed with knights. The worn black and white garments of the mendicant friar must have looked out of place amid the colorful shields and pennants of these Crusaders. Saint Thomas spoke politely to his neighbors but said very little, an hour later the banquet was in full swing and everyone had completely forgotten the big Italian friar, who sat as if he was carved of stone. Suddenly there was a pause in the uproar of French conversation. And in that instant, all the plates and cups jumped into the air, as Saint Thomas brought his big fist down on the table with a crash, and yelled as if he were in a trance: "And that will settle the Manichees." Every royal court has its conventions, even if it is the court of a Saint, and everyone was stunned; all eyes turned to the King to see what would happen. It was as if Saint Thomas had thrown a pie at Saint Louis, and many of the knights were prepared to toss the begging friar out the window. Saint Louis merely turned and speaking to his secretaries in a low voice, told them to take their tablets down to the absent minded friar and to copy the argument that had just occurred to him, because it must be a good one, and he might forget it.

Young Families Saint Thomas Aquinas is one of the most famous saints of the Catholic Church. He is called a 'Doctor of the Church.' He was a theologian, and philosopher. A theologian is someone who spends their life thinking about Jesus' life. They figure out things about God and the Catholic faith through prayer and study. Theologians help everyone learn about God. Saint Thomas' love of God and learning wasn't always respected. His parents sent him to a monastery when he was five years old to study and learn. His teachers were surprised by how quickly he learned and his great faith. But when Thomas announced that he wanted to become a Dominican, his family tried to stop him. His brothers captured him and locked him up in a castle. His mother, sister and brothers kept him there for two years! Finally, they changed their minds, and at last Thomas was allowed to join the Dominicans. Even there though, he still had some trouble. Thomas was a very big man with a kind and humble manner. Because he didn't talk very much, everyone thought he was stupid. They called him 'the ox.' But when they heard him preach everyone realized how wise and pious he really was. After he became a priest, Thomas studied in Paris and then taught at universities in many cities of Europe. He wrote more than 40 books and several beautiful hymns. All of his work praises God and has helped many people understand their faith better.

all Christian scholars in the Middle Ages were followers of Aristotle. Aristotle is no longer the latest intellectual fashion, but Aquinas's insistence that the Christian scholar must be prepared to meet other scholars on their own ground, to become familiar with their viewpoints, to argue from their premises, has been a permanent and valuable contribution to Christian thought. Some Christian scholars today are undertaking, with varying degrees of success, to explore the relations between Christianity and various contemporary studies or world-outlooks that have been used as weapons by opponents of Christianity. Examples that come to mind include the following:
  • William G Pollard, Anglican priest, nuclear physicist at the Oak Ridge Laboratory (government-connected), Executive Director of the Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Studies (not government-connected), and author of Chance and Providence and Physicist and Christian (both out of print).
  • John Polkinghorne, FRS, Anglican priest, head of Queen's College, Cambridge, nuclear physicist, and author of
