The works of St. Thomas Aquinas
    Have been accused of dryness.
    Even the Angelic Doctor saw
    The
    Summa as straw.
St. Thomas was born in Italy, the son of the Count of Aquino, in 1225. Against his family's forcefully expressed wishes, he became a Dominican friar and, in 1245, began his studies under Albert the Great in Paris and Cologne. His fellow students, misunderstanding Thomas's humility and reticence, gave him the nickname "the Dumb Ox." After hearing one of Thomas's theological arguments, St. Albert declared, "We call this young man a dumb ox, hut his bellowing in doctrine will one day resound throughout the world." In 1250, Thomas was ordained a priest, and about 1252 he was sent to teach at the Dominican school in Paris. From there, he became increasingly famous and increasingly in demand for his teaching, preaching, and writing. In 1266 he began the Summa Theologica , perhaps the greatest theological work in Western Christendom. Though not dogmatic Church teaching itself, its influence on the subsequent development of Roman Catholic theology can hardly be exaggerated. A famous anecdote illustrates Thomas's obsession with the truths of God: He was once summoned to the court of King St. Louis for a royal dinner. Placed at the king's right hand, he sank into quiet reflection while the chattering of the court went on about him. Suddenly, he smacked the table with a hand, cried, "That will settle the Manichees!" and called out for his secretary. When it was pointed out that this was not proper behavior in the royal presence, Thomas apologized and explained that he had thought he was in his cell. Louis, a king but also a saint, had the wisdom to summon a secretary for his guest.

It grew to eight classrooms and 400 pupils in the present building in 1945, with leadership provided by the Loretto Sisters. Immigration in the 1950s and 60s caused unprecedented growth which brought the school population to 1880 students in 1964. Additions were made to the school in 1954 and 1960, culminating in the present school of 27 classrooms. How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students A Catholic environment St. Thomas Aquinas provides a learning environment where models of Gospel values and Catholic doctrines, teachings and beliefs are an integral part of the daily life of the school. The religious education and family life programs provide students with a firm foundation in their faith development. Some examples of faith activities planned throughout the year are: daily prayers, liturgical events, participation in ShareLife, Christmas basket programs, and several food drives for the Good Shepherd Refuge, Caritas and St. Francis' Table.

107. St. Thomas Aquinas

St. Thomas Aquinas by G.K. Chesterton (This uncollected essay first appeared in THE SPECTATOR, Feb. 27, 1932, before Hodder and Stoughton commissioned Chesterton to write his book-length study of St. Thomas Aquinas.) The difficulty of dealing with St. Thomas Aquinas in this brief article is the difficulty of selecting that aspect of a many-sided mind which will best suggest its size or scale. Because of the massive body which carried his massive brain, he was called "The Ox"; but any attempt to boil down such a brain into tabloid literature passes all possible jokes about an ox in a teacup. He was one of the two or three giants; one of the two or three greatest men who ever lived; and I should never be surprised if he turned out, quite apart from sanctity, to be the greatest of all. another way of putting the problem is to say that proportion alters according to what other men we are at the moment classing him with or pitting him against. We do not get the scale until we come to the few men in history who can be his rivals.

Welcome to the St. Thomas Aquinas Forum of Catholic Theology!
This website is dedicated to spreading the good news of Christianity as well as the Church of Jesus Christ, the holy Catholic Church. In writing the material for the St. Thomas Aquinas Forum, I have attempted to write these articles with simplicity and clarity, to better explain the theology of the Catholic Church in laymen's language. Hopefully in the coming years, this website
will amass a summation of the doctrines of Catholicism that will provide a deep, broad view of the Church's beliefs and faith. It
is my hope that all people are able to garner something positive in this site. Whether it be the curious agnostic who questions
the existence of God and the validity of organized religion, or the non-Catholic who is confused about Christian theology and
the dilemma of discovering the one true Church of Christ. I especially hope that this site will be useful to lapsed and active
Catholics who wish to further pursue the topics and theology of their own Church to enliven and enrich their faith. I hope this

110. St Thomas Aquinas - St Peter's Church, Nottingham, England On-line Magazine
st thomas aquinas (12251274). Patron Saint of schools and universities. As the schools and universities start a new academic year
http://www.stpetersnottingham.org/saints/aquinas.htm
St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)
Patron Saint of schools and universities As the schools and universities start a new academic year, perhaps it is appropriate to say a word or two about the patron saint of these institutions. Thomas was an intellectual, often described as the greatest of medieval philosophers;
  • a theologian whose influence persists today a university teacher who brought system and order to (at that time) a rather chaotic hit and miss approach to education and a Dominican friar of profound piety.
He was born near Aquino about 1225, one of many children of a Lombardi nobleman. His search for clarity in understanding was evident as a child when he apparently asked his teacher, "What is God?" He studied at Monte Casino and Naples where he decided to become a mendicant friar. His noble relatives were so shocked that they locked him up for a year in the vain hope of inducing him to change his mind. As a Dominican friar he studied under St Albert the Great at Cologne and gained a master’s degree in theology in 1256. The rest of his comparatively short life was spent in teaching, preaching and above all in writing. He taught in Cologne, Paris and Naples and died in 1274 on his way to the General Council at Lyons. Academic freedom As noted in a previous article (on Meister Eckhart Perfection for Thomas meant perfect charity. But he insisted that love by itself cannot unite us with God - love motivates the mind to approach God. He also maintained that God is ultimately incomprehensible but, by clarifying all that we can understand, we can come face to face with the mystery of God.

Thomas Aquinas and Big Bang Cosmology
William Carroll Contemporary cosmologists in their fascination about the beginning of the universe echo Aristotle's observation that the "beginning of anything is the most important part, being indeed half of the whole." [ Problems X 892a30-3] As Aristotle notes in the Poetics [VII 1450b27-29], a beginning is that which does not have anything necessarily before it but does have something necessarily following from it. "Beginning" is a relative term; it is used in many contexts, and, as we will see, confusion in analyses about beginnings pervades almost all of current cosmological reflection on the beginning of the universe. Here again Aristotle offers a helpful warning: a small mistake in the beginning can produce large distortions in what follows. Recent studies in particle physics and astronomy have produced dazzling speculations about the early history of the universe. Cosmologists now routinely entertain elaborate scenarios which propose to describe what the universe was like when it was the size of a softball, a mere 10 second after the Big Bang. The description of the emergence of four fundamental forces and twelve discrete subatomic particles is almost a common-place in modern physics. There is little doubt among scientists that we live in the aftermath of a giant explosion which occurred around 15 billion years ago give or take a few billion.
