Aquinas, St. Thomas (ca. 1225-1274)

Italian theologian whose importance to science lies in the fact that he was a a rationalist. He is exemplar of medieval reason. Aquinas was raised by monks, and joined the Dominican order. He taught at Paris and wrote Summa Theologica. Aquinas accepted Aristotle's teachings, and found them perfectly compatible with theology. He believed that men were made in God's image in that they had the power of reason. With the statement "Nihil est in intellectu, nisi prius fuerit in sensu" (nothing is in the mind that has not previously been perceived by the senses), he contradicted Plato , believing the world is at it seems.

74. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Canons And Canonesses Regular
According to st. thomas aquinas, a canon regular is essentially a religious cleric.
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03288a.htm
Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... C > Canons and Canonesses Regular A B C D ... Z
Canons and Canonesses Regular
(Also called REGULAR CLERICS, RELIGIOUS CLERICS, CLERIC-CANONS, AUGUSTINIAN CANONS, BLACK CANONS, MONXCANONS). According to St. Thomas Aquinas , a canon regular is essentially a religious cleric, or, as the same doctor aptly expresses it: "The Order of Canons Regular is necessarily constituted by religious clerics, because they are essentially destined to those works which relate to the Divine mysteries, whereas it is not so with the monastic Orders." (II-II:189:8 ad 2um, and II-II:184:8). We have then here what constitutes a canon regular and what distinguishes him from a monk. The clerical state is essential to the Order of Canons Regular, whereas it is only accidental to the Monastic Order. Hence Erasmus, himself a canon regular, declared that the canons regular are a quid medium The spirit of the canonical order is thus quaintly but clearly explained in the "Observances in Use at the Augustinian Priory at Barnwell, Cambridge," lately edited with a translation by F.W. Clarke: The road along which Canons Regular walk in order to reach the heavenly Jerusalem is the rule of Blessed Augustine. Furthur lest Canons Regular should wander away from the rule, there are given to them, in addition, observances in accordance with it handed down from remote ages and approved among holy fathers in all quarters of the world. This rule is simple and easy, so that unlearned men and children can walk in it without stumbling. On the other hand it is deep and lofty, so that the wise and strong can find in it matter for abundant and perfect contemplation. An elephant can swim in it and a lamb can walk in it safely. As a lofty tower surrounded on all sides by walls makes the soldiers who garrison it safe, fearless, and impregnable, so the rule of Blessed Augustine, fortified on all sides by observances in accordance with it, makes its soldiers, that is, Canon Regular, undismayed at the attacks, safe and invincible.

78. January 28 Saint
Brief summary of this saint's life, suitable for children. The way it is formatted can be hard to read, though.
http://www.tntt.org/vni/tlieu/saints/St0128.htm
January 28 ST. THOMAS AQUINAS Thomas lived in the thirteenth century. He was the son of a noble family of Italy. He was very intelligent, but he never boasted about it. He knew that his mind was a gift from God. Thomas was one of nine children. His parents hoped that he would become a Benedictine abbot some day. The family castle was in Rocca Secca, just north of Monte Cassino where the monks lived. Thomas was sent to the abbey for schooling when he was five. When he was eighteen, he went to Naples to finish his studies. There he met a new group of religious men called the Order of Preachers. Their founder, St. Dominic, was still living. Thomas knew he wanted to become a priest. He felt that he was called to join these men who would become known in popular language as "Dominicans." His parents were angry with him. When he was on his way to Paris to study, his brothers kidnapped him. They kept him a prisoner in one of their castles for over a year. During that time, they did all they could to make him change his mind. One of his sisters, too, came to persuade him to give up his vocation. But Thomas spoke so beautifully about

St. Albertus Magnus
Known as Albert the Great; scientist, philosopher, and theologian, born c. 1206; died at Cologne , 15 November 1280. He is called "the Great", and "Doctor Universalis" (Universal Doctor), in recognition of his extraordinary genius and extensive knowledge, for he was proficient in every branch of learning cultivated in his day, and surpassed all his contemporaries, except perhaps Roger Bacon (1214-94), in the knowledge of nature. Ulrich Engelbert, a contemporary, calls him the wonder and the miracle of his age: "Vir in omni scientia adeo divinus, ut nostri temporis stupor et miraculum congrue vocari possit" (De summo bono, tr. III, iv). I.
