About the Author
Saint Anselm of Canterbury (b. 1033, Aosta, Lombardy; d. 1109, Canterbury, Kent) is generally considered to be the founder of the philosophical school of Scholasticism. He was a major figure in the intellectual life of the Middle Ages, and a major political and ecclesiastical force as well. As archbishop of Canterbury he was at the center of the lay investiture controversy in England. Saint Anselm spent the majority of his tenure as archbishop in opposition to William II (William Rufus, r. 1087-1100) and later Henry I (r. 1100-1135) because of his steadfast position on lay investiture. The reconciliation of the two positions at the Synod of Westminster (1107) was a basis for the Concordat of Worms (1122), which briefly settled the matter in Germany. Saint Anselm is not generally remembered for those accomplishments, however. He is instead revered for his contributions to philosophy and religious study. By coupling philosophy with his religious and scriptural investigations, he refined the discipline of theology. His examination of the nature and existence of God led to the formulation of the ontological proof, an often-cited example of his work: "Hence, there is no doubt that there exists a being, than which nothing greater can be conceived, and it exists both in the understanding and in reality."

The Ontological Argument
The Ontological Argument
The ontological argument is an a priori argument for the existence of God, i.e. an argument for the existence of God that doesn’t rely on any observation of evidence in the world around us. God’s perfection, the ontological argument asserts, is inconsistent with his non-existence. God’s non-existence, it concludes, is therefore impossible; God must exist. St Anselm is credited with the invention of the ontological argument, which he first set out in the second chapter of his Proslogion

News From St. Anselm
Your Lois Lane of St. Anselm of Canterbury is taking a break for the summer months. I’m off to Wales with Dave for a Celtic pilgrimage, led by an Episcopalian nun who leads three Great Britain Celtic pilgrimages a year. I’ll be back with these columns in September. Have a wonderful, blessed summer. Cammie Bella News from St. Anselm The most important summer news from St. Anselm is that Fr. Jon will be on sabbatical from June 18 to Sept. 17. This is his first sabbatical in 19 years in higher education ministry in Corvallis. Sabbaticals are supposed to give not only time for reflection and refreshment, but also time to accomplish what can’t get done in the hurly-burly of regularly scheduled work. So what are Fr. Jon’s goals for this time? First, visiting. There is a network of former Canterbury House and St. Anselm people spread over the Pacific Northwest. A number of these are active supporters of St. Anselm. To talk face to face with as many of these people as possible about St. Anselm’s ministry and its future will be time well spent. Second, to revise and complete his commentary on the Book of Common Prayer. Bibliographies haven’t been updated since 1991. Some sections of the Prayer Book – Catechism, Ministration at the Time of Death – haven’t been written about. Fr. Jon uses this book as the liturgics text at the Center for the Diaconate – so it’s important that it be up to date and comprehensive.

His successor, Abbot anselm of Bec arguably the greatest of the Archbishops ofCanterbury - followed him in with their names - Lanfranc in st Martin s Chapel
http://www.canterbury-cathedral.org/histbuild.html
The first Archbishop of Canterbury was St Augustine who arrived on the coast of Kent as a missionary to England in 597 AD. He came from Rome, sent by Pope Gregory the Great. The story goes that Gregory had seen "Angle" slaves for sale in the city market and struck by their beauty, had remarked "not Angles but Angels". Such a people he was convinced should be converted to Christianity, and ordered Augustine and a group of monks to set out for England.
On his arrival Augustine was given a church at Canterbury by the local King Ethelbert whose Queen, Bertha, was already a Christian. This building had been a place of worship during the Roman occupation of Britain. Soon consecrated Bishop, Augustine established his seat (or "cathedra") in this place as the first Archbishop of Canterbury. The present archbishop, Most Revd Dr Rowan Williams, is 104th in the line of succession.
Until the 10th century the Cathedral community was a family of clergy, living a regulated life as the household of the Archbishop. Not until 998 do we find evidence that they were living by the Rule of St. Benedict as a formal monastic community. The Benedictine community of monks continued until the monastery was dissolved in 1540.

St. Anselm,
Archbishop of Canterbury

Anselm was born in Aosta (Piedmont) around 1033. He entered the Monastery of Bec which, under Lanfranc , had become a centre of learning. Anselm succeeded Lanfranc as Abbot and, on a visit to England in 1093, he was compelled by William Rufus to accept the Archbishopric of Canterbury. William, however, continually thwarted and harassed him, by plundering and oppressing the Church, so that Anselm was driven to lay his difficulties before the Pope. The appeal met with little success but, upon the death of William, he was recalled by King Henry I and the voice of all the people. Fresh difficulties arose however, when Henry expressed his desire that Anselm should receive the investiture from his own hands. This, Anselm declined unless it were sanctioned by the Pope. He was inflexible in his determination to protect the rights and liberties of the Church and, finally, the conflict was settled by a compromise, two years before his death which took place on 21st April 1109. His honesty of purpose, his undaunted courage, his saintly character and, above all, his great learning, entitle him to be regarded as one of the chief glories of the English Church. He was the author of many theological and philosophical works of which the most famous was Cur Deus Homo. He was canonized by Pope Alexander VI in 1494.
