Anselm of Canterbury
Saint Anselm of Canterbury or April 21 ), a widely influential mediæval philosopher and theologian , held the office of Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109. Philosophers perhaps think of Anselm primarily as the author of the ontological argument for the existence of God. But he also authored a number of other arguments for the existence of God, based on cosmological and teleological grounds. Western theologians however, regard Anselm is important because he interprets the death and resurrection of Christ as the self-satisfaction of God in order to allow for the salvation of sinful men and women whose salvation would otherwise offend God's inherent property of justice. In this way Anselm established one of the most prominent atonement theories in the history of western theology Major Works:

Generally considered one of the most significant philosophers of the Middle Ages and the founder of Scholasticism, Anselm focused on ontological proofs for the existence of God from reason alone. When Anselm was Abbot of Bec, Normandy, the monastery became a center of learning, and theological ideas were explored and questioned there. As Archbishop of Canterbury, England, he came into conflict with King William II and King Henry I

ome now, insignificant man, fly for a moment from your affairs, escape for a little while from the tumult of your thoughts. Put aside now your weighty cares and leave your wearisome toils. Abandon yourself for a little to God and rest for a little in him.
Enter into the inner chamber of your soul, shut out everything save God and what can be of help in your quest for him and having locked the door seek him out. Speak now, my whole heart, speak now to God: 'I seek your countenance, O Lord, your countenance I seek.'
Come then, Lord my God, teach my heart where and how to seek you, where and how to find you.
Lord, if you are not present here, where, since you are absent, shall I look for you ? On the other hand, if you are everywhere why then, since you are present, do I not see you ? But surely you dwell in light inaccessible. And where is this inaccessible light, or how can I approach the inaccessible light ? Or who shall lead me and take me into it that I may see you in it ? Again, by what signs, under what aspect, shall I seek you ? Never have I seen you, Lord my God, I do not know your face.
What shall he do, most high Lord, what shall this exile do, far away from you as he is ? What shall your servant do, tormented by love of you and yet cast off far from your face ? He yearns to see you and your countenance is too far away from him. He desires to come close to you, and your dwelling place is inaccessible; he longs to find you and does not know where you are; he is eager to seek you out and he does not know your countenance.

St. Anselm (1033-1109) As archbishop of Canterbury, Anselm was not at his greatest, but he did one thing of lasting value: he put an end to the denigration of the 'rustic' English saints by the new Norman churchmen. Lanfranc had even struck St. Dunstan out of the calendar; Anselm put him and many others back. He encouraged devotion to the traditional English saints, and he undoubtedly helped to promote that affection for all things English which is found even among churchmen of Norman ancestry after his day. He thus helped to heal that emotional schism which the Norman Conquest had opened in English life. from The Saints: A Concise Biographical Dictionary, ed. John Coulson

ST ANSELM IS THE DOCTOR OF SCHOLASTICISM. HE INTRODUCED A SUBTLE DIMENSION IN LEARNING TO PROMOTE GROWTH IN CHARITY AND FAMILIARITY WITH DIVINE LOVE. HE WAS THE FIRST IN THE CHURCH TO OPPOSE THE SLAVE TRADE. HE WAS A DARING AND ADVENTUROUS SOUL.
ANSELM NEVER GAVE UP ON HIS VOCATION DESPITE A LONG DELAY. WE CAN LEARN MANY PRECIOUS THINGS ABOUT FREEDOM OF CHOICE FROM HIM. HIS NEW IDEAS ABOUT PRAYER WERE A FIRST FOR THE CHURCH. TRY TO FOLLOW HIS ADVICE. IMITATE HIM!
ANSELM MADE A GREAT CONTRIBUTION TO THE CHURCH IN HIGHLIGHTING MARY'S SIGNIFICANCE AND HOLINESS. THIS WAS LONG BEFORE SHE WAS PROCLAIMED THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTON AS A DOGMA.
St Anselm, 1033-1109. Doctor of Scholasticism, Feast April 21st.
Anselm was a daring soul. He was unafraid to try new adventures. Prayer gave him new confidences to venture out into the unknown. He wasn't always successful. He searched his mind and heart earnestly to discover God and never gave up on his vocation despite a long delay. One major contribution that Anselm excelled in was his opposition to the slave trade. Secondly, his emphases on freedom of choice and new ideas about prayer were a first for the Church.

Synopsis
ANSELM OF CANTERBURY In the history of theology Anselm stands as the father of orthodox scholasticism. He was called the second Augustine. Of the two theological tendencies at that time occupying the field, - the one more free and rational, represented by Berengarius; anti the other confining itself more closely to the tradition of the church, and represented by Lanfranc, - he chose the latter; and he defines the object of scholastical theology to be the logical development and dialectical demonstration of the doctrines of the church such as they were handed down through the Fathers. The dogmas of the church are to him identical with revelation itself; and their truth surpasses the conceptions of reason so far, that it seems to him to be mere vanity to doubt a dogma on account of its unintelligibility. Credo ut intelligam, non quaero intelligere ut credam, is the principle on which he proceeds; and after him it has become the principle of all orthodox theology. As a metaphysician he was a Realist; and one of his earliest works
