St Anselm of Canterbury (1033/34-1109)
Born in Aosta in Northern Italy, St Anselm was a Benedictine monk and, from 1093, Archbishop of Canterbury. His application of philosophy to theology, which took religious doctrine as a given but then sought to clarify that doctrine through the use of reason, was typical of the medieval period, and earned him the name “the Father of Scholasticism.” His famous dictum “ fides quaerens intellectum ” (“faith seeking understanding”) summarises this approach. Anselm is credited with the invention of the ontological argument for God’s existence, which he set out in his Proslogion (“Discourse”). His Monologion (“Soliloquy”) also contains a version of the cosmological argument and a Platonic argument for the existence of a supreme Good that is the source of all other goodness. He is also remembered for his account of the Atonement in terms of satisfaction for wrongs committed against God’s majesty, set out in his Cur Deus Homo (“Why God man?”).

St. Anselm
Archbishop of Canterbury, Doctor of the Church; born at Aosta a Burgundian town on the confines of Lombardy, died 21 April, 1109. His father, Gundulf, was a Lombard who had become a citizen of Aosta, and his mother, Ermenberga, came of an old Burgundian family. Like many other saints, Anselm learnt the first lessons of piety from his mother, and at a very early age he was fired with the love of learning. In after life he still cherished the memories of childhood, and his biographer, Eadmer, has preserved some incidents which he had learnt from the saint's own lips. The child had heard his mother speak of God , Who dwelt on high ruling all things. Living in the mountains, he thought that Heaven must be on their lofty summits. "And while he often revolved these matters in his mind, it chanced that one night he saw in a vision that he must go up to the summit of the mountain and hasten to the court of God God's God pallium . But here was a fresh occasion of trouble. The Antipope Clement was disputing the authority of Urban II , who had been recognized by France and Normandy. It does not appear that the English King was a partisan of the

Saint Anselm
Saint Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) was the outstanding Christian philosopher and theologian of the eleventh century. He is best known for the celebrated "ontological argument" for the existence of God in chapter two of the Proslogion , but his contributions to philosophical theology (and indeed to philosophy more generally) go well beyond the ontological argument. In what follows I examine Anselm's theistic proofs, his conception of the divine nature, and his account of human freedom, sin, and redemption.

by Anselm of Canterbury from the Littlemore Anselm Manuscript, 12th century Christian soul, brought to life again out of the heaviness of death, redeemed and set free from wretched servitude by the blood of God, rouse yourself and remember that you are risen, realize that you have been redeemed and set free. Consider again the strength of your salvation and where it is found. Meditate upon it, delight in the contemplation of it. Shake off your lethargy and set your mind to thinking over these things. Taste the goodness of your Redeemer, be on fire with love for your Savior. Chew the honeycomb of his words, suck their flavor which is sweeter than sap, swallow their wholesome sweetness. Chew by thinking, suck by understanding, swallow by loving and rejoicing. Be glad to chew, be thankful to suck, rejoice to swallow. What then is the strength and power of your salvation and where is it found ? Christ has brought you back to life. He is the good Samaritan who healed you. He is the good friend who redeemed you and set you free by laying down his life for you. Christ did all this. So the strength of your salvation is the strength of Christ. Where is the strength of Christ?

ST ANSELM, CONFESSOR, ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY—(A. D. 1109) Feast: April 21 From his life, written by Eadmer his disciple, in two books, also the same author's History of Novelties, in six books, from the year 1066 to 1122; and a poem on the miracles of St. Anselm, probably by the same writer, published by Martenne, Ampliss. Collectio, t. 6, pp. 983, 987. The principal memorials relating to St. Anselm are collected in the Benedictine edition of his works; from which a short abstract is here given. See Gallia Christ. Nova, t. 9, p. 223. Ceillier, t. 21, p. 267. St. Anselm applied himself diligently to the study of every part of theology, by the clear light of scripture and tradition. Whilst he was prior at Bec, he wrote his Monologium, so called because in this work he speaks alone, explaining the metaphysical proofs of the existence and nature of God. Also his Proslogium, or contemplation of God's attributes in which he addresses his discourse to God, or himself. The Meditations, commonly called the Manual of St. Austin, are chiefly extracted out of this book. It was censured by a neighboring monk, which occasioned the saint's Apology. These and other the like works, show the author to have excelled in metaphysics all the doctors of the church since St. Austin. He likewise wrote, whilst prior, On Truth, on Free-will, and On the Fall of the Devil, or, On the Origin of Evil; also his Grammarian, which is in reality a treatise on Dialectic, or the Art of Reasoning.

SAINT ANSELM OF CANTERBURY; ARCHBISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH—1033-1109 A.D. Feast: April 21 On his father's death Anselm consulted his superior as to whether he should return to Italy and manage the estates he had inherited, or remain in France and enter the Church. Lanfranc, fearing to influence unduly his young disciple and friend, referred him to Maurillus, archbishop of Rouen, and on his advice Anselm, then twenty-seven, became a monk. Three years later, when Lanfranc was appointed abbot of St. Stephen's at nearby Caen, Anselm succeeded him as prior at Bec. There was some criticism of this rapid promotion, but he soon won the allegiance of the other monks, including that of his bitterest rival. This was an undisciplined young man named Osbern, whom Anselm gradually persuaded to lead a more serious life and whom he nursed tenderly in his last illness. With regard to the education of the young, Anselm held very liberal views. To an abbot who was lamenting the poor success of his efforts, he said: "If you planted a tree in your garden, and bound it down on all sides, so that it could not spread years branches, what kind of a tree would it prove when in after years you gave it room to spread? Would it not be useless, with its boughs all twisted and tangled? . . . But that is how you treat your boys . . . cramping them with fears and blows and debarring them from the enjoyment of any freedom." In 1078, after serving as prior for fifteen years, Anselm was chosen abbot of Bec. The office entailed visits to England, where the abbey owned a great deal of property and where his old teacher Lanfranc, now archbishop of Canterbury, was upholding the rights of the Church against the successful and arrogant King William I. Anselm was received in England with honor, even by the King himself. The English monk Eadmers Anselm's biographer, writes that he had a winning way of giving instruction, pointed with homely illustrations which even the simplest could understand.

Archbishop of Canterbury
Born: 1033 at Aosta, Piedmont Died: 21st April 1109 Anselm was born in Aosta around 1033. He entered the Monastery of Bec which, under Lanfranc , had become a centre of learning. Anselm succeeded Lanfranc as Abbot and, on a visit to England in 1093, he was compelled by William Rufus to accept the Archbishopric of Canterbury. William, however, continually thwarted and harassed him, by plundering and oppressing the Church, so that Anselm was driven to lay his difficulties before the Pope. The appeal met with little success but, upon the death of William, he was recalled by King Henry I and the voice of all the people. Fresh difficulties arose however, when Henry expressed his desire that Anselm should receive the investiture from his own hands. This, Anselm declined unless it were sanctioned by the Pope. He was inflexible in his determination to protect the rights and liberties of the Church and, finally, the conflict was settled by a compromise, two years before his death which took place in 1109. His honesty of purpose, his undaunted courage, his saintly character and, above all, his great learning, entitle him to be regarded as one of the chief glories of the English Church. He was the author of many theological and philosophical works of which the most famous was Cur Deus Homo. He was canonized by Pope Alexander VI in 1494.

Anselm of Canterbury St. Anselm of Canterbury, the father of Scholasticism, was born in the Piedmont c. . The son of a Lombard noble, he received a classical education; when his mother died in , he gave away his wealth and sought knowledge in the Christian tradition. In , he entered the monastery at Bec and became a disciple of Lanfranc , whom he succeeded as abbot of Bec ( ) and as Archbishop of Canterbury ( ). While at Bec, Anselm wrote the Monologium and Proslogium , which contain his influential proofs of the existence of God. As Archbishop of Canterbury, he opposed lay investiture and was twice ( and ) exiled to Rome. The Synod of Westminster ( ) ruled that bishops and abbots would do homage to the king before being invested by the ranking cleric; the Synod was the model for the Concordat of Worms ( ), which settled the lay investiture issue in Europe. Anselm of Canterbury
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Saint Anselm of Canterbury or April 21 ), a widely influential mediæval philosopher and theologian , held the office of Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109. Philosophers perhaps think of Anselm primarily as the author of the ontological argument for the existence of God . But he also authored a number of other arguments for the existence of God, based on cosmological and teleological grounds. Western theologians however, regard Anselm as important because he interprets the death and resurrection of Christ as the self-satisfaction of God in order to allow for the salvation of sinful men and women whose salvation would otherwise offend God's inherent property of justice. In this way Anselm established one of the most prominent atonement theories in the history of western theology Major Works:

    Mission
The Mission of St. Anselm's Cross-Cultural Community Center is to help individuals of varying cultures with problems of daily life; to assist families of many backgrounds to fulfill the potential of each of their members; and to work with our multicultural communities to assure that conditions may be created so that all may live peaceful and productive lives.
    History of the Center
Founded in 1976, the Center was originally named St. Anselm's Immigrant and Refugee Community Center. It provides much needed aid to new residents in our community who face problems with language, employment, and adjustment to a new culture. Since the beginning, St. Anselm's has maintained its grass-roots philosophy in efforts to address the areas of assistance among diverse ethnic and cultural communities in Orange County. While the original emphasis was on Southeast Asian refugees-primarily Vietnamese - due to recent political upheavals in the world, the Center is also asked to provide assistance to families and individuals from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Central America. Without the assistance St. Anselm's provides, many new residents face insurmountable problems that jeopardize their ability to become self-sufficient and contributing members of our community. By opening a door and offering our hand, we provide these new neighbors with an opportunity to enrich their lives as well as our own. This is the traditional American immigrant experience.

Although born at Aosta in Alpine Italy and educated in Normandy, Anselm became a Benedictine monk, teacher, and abbot at Bec and continued his ecclesiastical career in England. Having been appointed the second Norman archbishop of Canterbury in 1093, Anselm secured the Westminster Agreement of 1107, guaranteeing the (partial) independence of the church from the civil state. In a series of short works such as De Libertate Arbitrii (On Free Will) De Casu Diaboli (The Fall of the Devil) , and Cur Deus Homo ( Why God became Man ), Anselm propounded a satisfaction theory of the atonement, upon which the incarnation promises relief from the strict demands of divine justice. He defended a notion of the relation between philosophy and theology that, like Augustine 's, emphasized the methodological priority of faith over reason, since truth is to be achieved only through " fides quaerens intellectum " ("faith seeking understanding").
