The Flow Through: for the Johns
We loved the front, your wall of words,
and the fact that snatches made
sense to the professors. We read
The Double Dream Of Spring on a jetty
that sloped into Sydney harbour
and argued fiercely about whether it was the way
to go, as if we could have imitated
your logarithms of the soul.
We tied knots in your tangles, tendrils
of phrases that wound their way around the page.
Those were the days we exist in now nothing made sense because living took the the edge off our mental fishing knives, we hacked through time as if it existed. Gaping holes in space, we filled them with sentences stitched together with a grammar that was streetwise, nothing made much sense and your impeccable manners got us through the gates. The mix of sweetness and a ferocity that could burn holes was the quality I learnt from Some Trees, those poems were places I made friends in, I remember Tranter standing in some classroom reading them, and his laughter that was edged with irony and kindness. Ashbery Days where poets

Red Necked Avocet by Robert Adamson
[Above] Photo of Robert Adamson by Jenni Mitchell, 1998. Robert Adamson Red Necked Avocet
Wading in a lake blocked off to the sea
our legs illuminated by white hot
mantles burning kerosene
in pressure lamps, it was all detail.
Could we know the avocets
were the victims? The acid
from our joint imagination billowed out behind us, a killing wake; we were all eyes, huge prawns kicked up under our soles then zapped away into weed beds; the wings of swans fanned our pornographic desire to eat the avocets tiny, speckled eggs. One of the children looked angelic because she shuddered as we tried to feed her boiled prawns. The fire on the sand crackled with dead bulrush canes, spat whizzing pop corn sized embers, its flames dancing in the darkness of the black of the moon; our cotton clothes soaked up the taste of the smoke¹s breath; we were drunk with salt and sand; killing things, eating seafood, talking rubbish, having fun.

Artists Active: in partnership from 1843 - 1847
Photographer
David Octavius Hill was a portrait painter, and Robert Adamson, the brother of photographer John Adamson, was an engineer. Their partnership was born in 1843, when Hill received a commission for a painting of the 470 attendees at the first meeting of the Free Church of Scotland. He decided to use photography to create individual documents of each attendee and was introduced to Adamson as a possible partner. Hill and Adamson took more than a year to make calotype portraits of each cleric in attendance, while the painting took Hill twenty-three years to complete. During their four-year partnership, the pair made more than three thousand photographs, including landscapes and architectural studies, but they are best known for their portrait work. Hill and Adamson's portraits of working men and women from the fishing village of Newhaven, near Edinburgh, are among the earliest examples of social documentary photography. Upon Adamson's early death, Hill gave up photographing for a dozen years, though he continued to sell prints. In 1858 he became a Council Member of the Photographic Society of Scotland. He later collaborated with another photographer in Glasgow, but they produced few works to compare to his collaboration with Adamson.

ENTERING THE NEW CENTURY THROUGH GLASS' - the poetry of Bob Adamson
Review by Anne Kellas
Waving to Hart Crane Category: Poetry Bibliographic details:
A$ 16.95 'We enter the new / century through glass, / black oceans
/ and black winds, / thin fibre funnelling / poetry out / of
existence' ... So says Adamson in the poem that gives this collection its name. A lover of poetry, of words, of images, of the river that has been his home, Robert Adamson, or Bob Adamson as he is known among his contemporaries, lives and breathes his poetry into crystalline shape. Robert Adamson was born in 1943 in Sydney, but ran away as a young teenager to live as a fisherman on the Hawkesbury River in New South Wales. He is no stranger to the spotlight of literary acclaim. In 1989 one of his collections of poetry, The Clean Dark , won all three of Australia's most prestigious literary awards for poetry.
