A Note to Visitors
I will respond to questions and comments as time permits, but if you want to take issue with any position expressed here, you first have to answer this question: What evidence would it take to prove your beliefs wrong? I simply will not reply to challenges that do not address this question. Refutability is one of the classic determinants of whether a theory can be called scientific. Moreover, I have found it to be a great general-purpose cut-through-the-crap question to determine whether somebody is interested in serious intellectual inquiry or just playing mind games. Note, by the way, that I am assuming the burden of proof here - all you have to do is commit to a criterion for testing. It's easy to criticize science for being "closed-minded". Are you open-minded enough to consider whether your ideas might be wrong?

History is a tricky subject. Not just because you never know if your texts really have been written by that special person, if they are just re-worked, completely forged or someone made a mistake by copying them. But also because we can only judge a different time, place and society from our own point of view. Sure, Rage of the Heart is nothing but a musical - a musical about a simple, classical love story that's easy to understand for everyone. If that's your point of view, all you need to know is written in the synopsis. But if you're interested in understanding the figures and their actions, follow me ...

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Pierre Abélard (in English, Peter Abelard ) or Abailard April 21 ) was a French scholastic philosopher . The story of his affair with Heloise has become legendary. He was born at Pallet or Palais, not far from Nantes , in France , the eldest son of a noble Breton family. The name Abaelardus (also written Abailardus, Abaielardus, and in many other ways) is said to be a corruption of Habelardus, substituted by Abelard himself for a nickname ('Bajolardus') given him when a student. As a boy, he learned quickly, and, choosing an academic life instead of the military career usual for one of his birth, acquired the art of dialectic, the contemporary name for philosophy, meaning at that time chiefly the logic of Aristotle transmitted through Latin channels; this was the great subject of liberal study in the episcopal schools. Roscellinus , the famous canon of Compiegne , claims to have been his teacher; but whether this was in early youth, when he wandered from school to school for instruction and exercise, or some years later, after he had already begun to teach, remains uncertain.

Abelard, Peter
Historia Calamitatum Mearum The History of my Misfortunes , Abelard embarked on a career of detached contemplation marked by independence from traditional authorities and contemporaneous fashions. He invented a novel solution to the problem of universals that rejected both realism and nominalism in their most extreme forms. Only individual things exist for Abelard, but general terms have universal applicability to things whose common features are known by a process of mental abstraction . Abelard also wrote on the difficulties involved in scriptural interpretation in Sic et Non For and Against ) (1122) and on the importance of human intentions for theological ethics in Scito te Ipsum Know Thyself
Gersonides (Levi ben Gershom) French Jewish mathematician and philosopher. Following the leads of Maimonides and Ibn Rushd , Gersonides maintained that truths of reason cannot conflict with revealed religion. He devoted great attention to the problems of how creation ex nihilo and human freedom are possible.

T he P en(is), C astration, and I dentity:
Abelard's Negotiations of Gender
Abelard's narrative of identity anxieties in his Letter of Consolation to a Friend incorrectly called by its modern editorial title, the Historia calamitatum (c.1132), is well known, but the significance of Abelard's representations of self and the body and his strategies for remasculinization have not yet become a concern of modern scholars. What Abelard tries to repress in this work, his desire and the social consequences of castration, continues to be repressed in most modern studies of Abelard and Heloise. Recent theory has brought into focus the complicated connections among the sexed human body, the discourses and ideologies that "make sex," and the construction of gender identities. The twelfth and thirteenth centuries appear to be an era of heightened anxiety about the body and its sexuality. Discourse about the body, the marks or signs of sexual and gender identity, the soul / body dichotomy, and the correspondences between the material or physical condition of the body and the mind and soul proliferated. As recent studies like John Baldwin's The Language of Sex make clear, the twelfth and thirteenth centuries seem to bear out Foucault's claim that each era produces the means simultaneously to represent, manage, and control sexuality in the discourses that circulate around bodies.

80. Stealing Heaven - The Story Of Abelard And Heloise
Heloise (11011162) and pierre abelard (1079-1142) are buried togetherfor eternity, in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris, France.
http://derekdelintfansite.com/stealingheaven/thestory.htm
The Film The Story Multimedia Reviews ... Home THE STORY The movie STEALING HEAVEN tells the tale of one of the greatest, true star-crossed lovers story next to the fictional Romeo and Juliet.
Peter (Pierre) Abelard, was a reknowned 12th century scholar, lecturer and poet. He broke his vows of celibacy and fell in love with Heloise, a smart, vivacious, challenging and highly educated (unusual for the time) 16-year-old who comes to Paris to live with her Uncle Fulbert. During the course of their intimate relationship, Abelard and Heloise have a child out of wedlock. Abelard is in turmoil with himself for going against God and yet he loves Heloise so much that he cannot stop himself. After they secretly marry, Fulbert (Heloise's uncle) seeks his revenge against Abelard for ruining the possibilities of marrying Heloise off to a rich husband. If you have not seen the movie nor know of the tale already, I won't spoil it for you. If you would like to read more about the story, I highly recommend reading the translation of one of Abelard's writings that is as close to an autobiography as you can get. It is called Historia Calamitatum - The Story of My Misfortunes Heloise (1101-1162) and Pierre Abelard (1079-1142) are buried together for eternity, in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris, France.
