Pierre Abelard Pierre Abélard (in English, Peter Abelard ) or Abailard April 21 ) was a French scholastic philosopher . The story of his affair with Heloise has become legendary. He was born at Pallet or Palais, not far from Nantes , in France , the eldest son of a noble Breton family. The name Abaelardus (also written Abailardus, Abaielardus, and in many other ways) is said to be a corruption of Habelardus, substituted by Abelard himself for a nickname ('Bajolardus') given him when a student. As a boy, he learned quickly, and, choosing an academic life instead of the military career usual for one of his birth, acquired the art of dialectic, the contemporary name for philosophy, meaning at that time chiefly the logic of Aristotle transmitted through Latin channels; this was the great subject of liberal study in the episcopal schools. Roscellinus, the famous canon of Compiegne , claims to have been his teacher; but whether this was in early youth, when he wandered from school to school for instruction and exercise, or some years later, after he had already begun to teach, remains uncertain. Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... Z (Peter of Poitiers, Petrus Scholasticus). A French writer who flourished about the middle of the twelfth century. From the second name we may, perhaps, infer that Poitiers was his native place. He was a disciple of Abelard, and is celebrated chiefly for his vigorous defence of his master in a letter which he addressed to St. Bernard after Abelard's condemnation at the Council of Soissons in 1141. Later on he wandered through the Cevennes Mountains, hunted, he tells us, not by wild beasts, but by the Christian faithful of the Diocese of Mende, who apparently took sides with St. Bernard. Chronicles of Love and Resentment Eric Gans Abelard and Heloise No. 13: Saturday, October 14, 1995 This quarter I've been teaching an undergraduate seminar on Ideas of Love , a topic not unrelated to that of this column. In the context of our readings, I thought I'd say a few words about the Middle Ages' most celebrated romantic couple. Readers familiar with French literature will remember Villon's lines: [Where is the very good/wise Heloise For whom was castrated and then a monk Pierre Abelard at Saint-Denis For his love he paid that penalty.] Abelard (1079-1142), the perfector of nominalism , the basis of modern empiricism, was arguably the first modern thinker. He was recognized as the most brilliant man of his time; students flocked to his lectures. Heloise (1101-1164), his junior by 22 years, was an unusually well-educated young woman, the pride of her uncle canon Fulbert . Abelard, attracted by her reputation, made use of his own to persuade Fulbert to let him give her lessons, and then to persuade his pupil to turn these lessons into a more agreeable form of activity ( We exchanged more kisses than learned propositions; my hands returned more often to her bosom than to our books.
