    Cluny and Citeaux (S of Dijon) were in some degree of rivalry at this time [Cistercians (white friars) centred on Citeaux; Cluniacs (black friars) on Cluny]. Both sects/cults headed large monastic organisations with great temporal power.     "Sous prétexte d'étudier, nous nous livrions entiers à l'amour (...). Notre ardeur connut toutes les phases de l'amour, et tous les raffinements insolites que l'amour imagine, nous en fîmes l'expérience". Celle-ci, parisienne noble alliée aux Montmorency, n'avait pas vingt ans. Fulbert apprendra leur amour et de mariage secret. Abélard, châtré, rentrera dans un monastère. "La honte, plus qu'une vocation véritable, me poussa vers l'ombre d'un cloître".
    Héloïse deviendra religieuse. Les deux amants, qui échangeront leurs lettres célèbres durant leur séparation, transformeront leur amour charnel en amour mystique. De sa retraite, Héloïse écrira notamment : "Les plaisirs amoureux qu'ensemble nous avons goûtés ont pour moi tant de douceur que je ne parviens pas à les détester (...). Au cours même des solennités de la messe, où la prière devrait être plus pure encore, des images obscènes assaillent ma pauvre âme (...). Loin de gémir des fautes que j'ai commises, je pense en soupirant à celles que je ne peux plus commettre".
