Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Karl Ziegler The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1963 Karl Ziegler was born in Helsa near Kassel in Germany, on November 26, 1898. He graduated in 1920 under Prof. von Auwers at the University of Marburg/Lahn and qualified as a lecturer in 1923. His research work in the field of radicals with trivalent carbon and his synthesis of multi-membered ring systems earned him the Liebig Medal in 1935. His research work at the Max-Planck institute over the past 20 years on synthesis and reactions in the chemistry of organ aluminum compounds, his discovery of organometallic mixed catalysts for the polymerization of olefins- all these are widely known. Karl Ziegler has been married to Maria Kurtz, since 1922. His daughter, Marianne Witte, is a doctor of medicine and is married to the chief physician of a children's hospital in the Ruhr. His son, Dr. Erhart Ziegler, is a physicist and patent attorney. Karl Ziegler has five grandchildren by his daughter and five by his son. Karl Ziegler died in 1973.

Marks hat auf dem Gebiet der Katalyse mit f-Elementen, insbesondere mit Elementen der Lanthanoide, Pionierarbeit geleistet. Er hat grundlegende Arbeiten zur Metallocen Polymerisationskatalyse beigesteuert, indem er zeigen konnte, dass die Wechselwirkung zwischen Katalysator und Cokatalysator ganz wesentlich die katalytische Aktivität und Stereoselektivität bei der Polymerisation beeinflusst. Herausragende Ergebnisse erzielte er auch bei seinen materialwissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen: ein Highlight sind die durch Selbstorganisation gewonnenen lichtemittierenden Dioden.

Soon afterwards he became a lecturer at his alma mater. In 1936 he became a Professor and Director of Chemistry at the University of Halle/Saale, while also being a visiting professor at the University of Chicago. His many accomplishments throughout his 75-year life are far too numerous to list. In 1963 he received the Noble Prize in Chemistry for his dedicated work in the field. Er entwickelte ab dem Jahre ein bei niedrigen Drücken arbeitendes Polymerisationsverfahren für Ethen in Gegenwart von metallorganischen Misch- katalysatoren . Für seine Entdeckungen auf dem Gebiet der Polymeren erhielt er zusammen mit Giulio Natta im Jahre den Nobelpreis für Chemie. Nach den beiden Forschern sind die Ziegler-Natta-Katalysatoren benannt, das sind katalytisch wirksame Metallkomplexe, die bei der Reduktion von Übergangsmetallverbindungen (z. B. Titan(III)-chlorid) mit metallorganischen Verbindungen (z. B. Diethylaluminiumchlorid) entstehen und welche die stereospezifische (= räumlich eindeutige) Polymerisation von Olefinen bei Normaldruck ermöglichen. Diese Katalysatoren haben große Bedeutung bei der Herstellung von Polyethen und Polypropen, industriellen Massenprodukten, die das Kunststoffzeitalter mit auf die Wege brachten.
