PIETER ZEEMAN Físico holandés Nació en Zonnemaire. Cursó estudios en la Universidad de Leiden, donde dio clases hasta ganar la cátedra de física en la Universidad de Amsterdam en 1900. En 1896 descubrió que las líneas espectrales de una fuente luminosa sometidas a un campo magnético fuerte se dividían en diversos componentes, cada uno de los cuales estaba polarizado. Este fenómeno, conocido como efecto Zeeman, confirmó la teoría electromagnética de la luz. Le concedieron en 1902 el Premio Nobel de Física, que compartió con el también holandés Hendrik Antoon Lorentz por su investigación conjunta sobre la influencia del magnetismo en la radiación. Falleció el 9 de octubre de 1943.
