    Zeeman, Pieter
    (b. May 25, 1865, Zonnemaire, Neth.d. Oct. 9, 1943, Amsterdam), Dutch physicist, joint winner, with Hendrik A. Lorentz, also of The Netherlands, of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1902 for his discovery of the Zeeman effect q.v. Zeeman, who had been a student of Lorentz at the University of Leiden, began lecturing at Leiden in 1890. Six years later, at the suggestion of Lorentz, he investigated the effect of magnetic fields on a source of light and found that each of the lines in the spectrum of emitted light split into several lines; this became known as the Zeeman effect. Zeeman was appointed professor of physics at the University of Amsterdam in 1900 and director of its Physical Institute in 1908. Remaining there until his death, he conducted research on the propagation of light in moving media, such as water, quartz, and flint.     Zeeman, Pieter (1865-1943), niederländischer Physiker und Nobelpreisträger, bekannt für die Entdeckung des nach ihm benannten Effekts. Zeeman wurde in Zonnemaire geboren und studierte an der Universität Leiden, wo er später auch lehrte. Im Jahre 1900 wurde er als Professor für Physik an die Universität von Amsterdam berufen. Zeeman entdeckte 1896, daß sich die Spektrallinien einer Lichtquelle im starken Magnetfeld in mehrere polarisierte Komponenten aufspalten. Dieses Phänomen, das als Zeeman-Effekt bezeichnet wird, bestätigt die elektromagnetische Theorie des Lichtes. Zeeman teilte sich im Jahre 1902 mit dem niederländischen Physiker Hendrik Antoon Lorentz den Nobelpreis für Physik für die gemeinsame Forschung über den Einfluß des Magnetismus auf die Strahlung.

    Domovská stránka Fyzici Holandský fyzik Pieter Zeeman se narodil 25. kvìtna 1865 v Zonnemaire (malá vesnice na ostrovì Schouwen v Holandsku) v rodinì místního luteránského knìze.

    Od roku 1885 studoval Zeeman na univerzitì v Leidenu. Jeho uèiteli byli mj. H. A. Lorentz - experimentální fyzika a H. Kamerlingh-Onnes - mechanika ( Nobelova cena za fyziku 1913 ). Od roku 1890 pùsobil Zeeman jako Lorentzùv asistent (v roce 1902 oba získali Nobelovu cenu za fyziku ). V roce 1893 obhájil Zeeman doktorát. V roce 1895 se oženil s Johannou Elizabeth Lebretovou. Mìl s ní syna a tøi dcery.

    Roku 1896 popsal Zeeman jev, kdy po zapnutí vnìjšího magnetického pole dochází k tomu, že ostré spektrální èáry se štìpí na více prostorovì blízkých spektrálních èar. Zeeman tento jev vysvìtlil jako interakci mezi magnetickým polem a magnetickým dipólovým momentem (souvisí s orbitálním momentem).     Zeeman, Pieter , natuurkundige (Zonnemaire (gem. Brouwershaven) 25-5- 1865 - Amsterdam 9-10- 1943 ). Zoon van Catharinus Forandinus Zeeman, Ned.-Herv. predikant, en Willemina Worst. Sinds 28-3-1895 gehuwd met Johanna Elisabeth Lebret. Uit dit huwelijk werden 1 zoon en 3 dochters geboren. Metingen over het verschijnsel van Kerr... Het was een beknopt overzicht van het bekroonde antwoord op een prijsvraag, uitgeschreven door de Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen te Haarlem. Tot zijn leermeesters te Leiden behoorde ook H.A. Lorentz, met wie een warme vriendschap hem sindsdien heeft verbonden. In 1894 werd hij privaatdocent in de wis- en natuurkunde te Leiden. Twee jaar later volgde een benoeming tot lector in Amsterdam. Nineteenth-Century Spectroscopy (Baltimore, 1969). Ofschoon Zeeman de ontdekking van het elektron nooit voor zich geclaimd heeft, is hij zonder twijfel de ontdekker van het in het atoom gebonden elektron, en dat hij zich daarvan bewust was, blijkt uit de titel van zijn inaugurale rede bij de aanvaarding op 12 maart 1900 van het extraordinariaat aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam

In consequence of my measurements of Kerr's magneto-optical phenomena, the thought occured to me whether the period of the light emitted by a flame might be altered when the flame was acted upon by magnetic force. It has turned out that such an action really occurs. I introduced into an oxyhydrogen flame placed between the poles of a Ruhmkorff's electromagnet, a filament of asbestos soaked in common salt. The light of the flame was examined with a Rowland's grating. Whenever the circuit was closed both D lines were seen to widen. Since one might attribute the widening to the known effects of the magnetic field on the flame,which would cause an alteration in the density and temperature of the sodium vapour, I had resort to a method of experimentation which is much more free from objection. Sodium was strongly heated in a tube of biscuit porcelain, such as Pringsheim used inhis interesting investigations upon the radiation of gases. The tube was closed at both ends by plane parallel glass plates, whose effective area was 1 cm. The tube was placed horizontally between the poles, at right angles to the lines of force. The light of an arc lamp was sent through. The absorption spectrum showed both D lines. The tube was continuously rotated round its axis to avoid temperature variations. Excitation of the magnet caused immediate widening of the lines It thus appears very probable that the period of sodium light is altered in the magnetic field. It is remarkable that Faraday, as early as 1862, had made the first recorded experiment in this direction, with the incomplete resources of that period, but with a negative result (Maxwell, "Collected Works," vol. ii, p. 790).
