Hideki Yukawa He received the Nobel Prize (physics) for the first time as a Japanese scholar. In 1935, Yukawa published a monumental paper, "On the Interaction of Elementary Particles, I", and introduced a new particle called "meson", in order to explain both the strong interaction and the weak interaction between elementary particles. But here, we may confine ourselves to the strong interaction within the nucleus of an atom. Yukawa thought that the binding force within nucleus, between proton and neutron, for instance, can be explained only by introducing a new particle, about 200 times heavier than electron. And a number of other articles, by Yukawa and collaborators, followed. He was appointed to a professr of mechanics in Kyoto University in 1939; but the far greater honor, the Nobel prize was given for this work in 1949; and Japanese people who were depressed after the World War II, welcomed this news enthusiastically, and Yukawa became a national hero since then. He was deeply impressed by the personality of Einstein, and it seems that he participated in such social activities as Pugwash conferences somehow out of the sense of duty prompted by Einstein, among others, as far as one can judge from his writings. But, of course, this does not depriciate his activities in the least.

Dr. Hideki Yukawa discovered electrons and became the first Japanese to win the Nobel Prize Mr. Yukawa was known worldwide for his contributions to the development of theoretical physics and won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1949. Before World War II, he won international acclaim for his discovery of electrons, then unknown in the atom's nucleus. The existence of electrons in cosmic rays, discovered later by other physicists, were named in his honor as Yukawa Electrons or U-Electrons.

Physics Yukawa, Hideki Yukawa, Hideki (1907 - ; Japan) Born in Tokyo, Hideki Yukawa is a noted Japanese nuclear physicist who correctly predicted the existence of elementary charged particles known as mesons. Yukawa predicted that it was the attraction of these mesons that was responsible for keeping the protons and neutrons of the nucleus together. Yukawa thought that these mesons were constantly emitted and absorbed by the protons and the neutrons. Twelve years after Yukawa's prediction, mesons were discovered. Yukawa received his formal education from the University of Kyoto. Following his education, Yukawa held the positions of lecturer and assistant professor at Osaka from 1933 to 1939 until he accepted the position of professor of theoretical physics at the University of Kyoto. During his career, Yukawa spent five years in the United States on a leave of absence and assumed the role of visiting professor at Princeton University and then at Columbia University. In 1949, Yukawa was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics and with that, Yukawa became the first Japanese to ever receive such an award (Encyclopedia International, 11:550, 19:568,1964; and Barba, p. 67, 1995).
