Chen Ning Yang Chen Ning Yang Chinese-born American theoretical physicist whose research with Tsung-Dao Lee showed that paritythe symmetry between physical phenomena occurring in right-handed and left-handed coordinate systemsis violated when certain elementary particles decay. Until this discovery it had been assumed by physicists that parity symmetry is as universal a law as the conservation of energy or electric charge. This and other studies in particle physics earned Yang and Lee the Nobel Prize for Physics for 1957. Life. Work. Almost from his earliest days as a physicist, Yang had made significant contributions to the theory of the weak interactionsthe forces long thought to cause elementary particles to disintegrate. (The strong forces that hold nuclei together and the electromagnetic forces that are responsible for chemical reactions are parity-conserving. Since these are the dominant forces in most physical processes, parity conservation appeared to be a valid physical law, and few physicists before 1955 questioned it.) By 1953 it was recognized that there was a fundamental paradox in this field since one of the newly discovered mesonsthe so-called K mesonseemed to exhibit decay modes into configurations of differing parity. Since it was believed that parity had to be conserved, this led to a severe paradox.

Chen Ning Yang Chen Ning Yang was born on September 22, 1922, in Hofei, Anhwei, China. After reading the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, he was inspired and adopted "Franklin' as his first name. In 1929, his family moved to Peiping, but in later years they had to move again to stay out of the way of the Japanese invaders. After obtaining his bachelor's degree in 1942 at National Southwest University in Kunming, he entered Tsinghua University. In 1944, he completed his master's degree and taught at a Chinese high school. He completed his doctorate at the University of Chicago in 1946. In 1949, Yang went to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and he became one of the very small number of professors on appointed Albert Einstein professor of physics and director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Chen Ning Yang shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Tsung Dao Lee in 1957. Yang and Tsung Dao Lee made a fundamental theoretical breakthrough of non-conservation of parity. Because of the their work, all science theories based on parity had to be reexamined. They were the first scientists of Chinese birth to win a Nobel Prize. They were also among the youngest men ever to receive a Nobel award. They obtained the shortest time interval ever between a discovery and the award of the Nobel Prize. Yang married Chih Li Tu. She was a former student of his in China. They had two sons and one daughter together. He became and American citizen in 1964. Because Yang was born in China and was an exceptional scientist who won the Nobel Prize, the Communist Chines Embassy in Sweden make some effort to return Yang back to China. However, he refused to go back. In his acceptance speech, Yang left no doubt that he would remain in the United States because of his devotion to modern science, he believed, is primarily of western origin.

CHEN NING YANG Chen Ning Yang was born on September 22, 1922, in Hofei, Anwhei, China, the first of five children of Ke Chuan Yang and Meng Hwa Loh Yang. He is also known as Frank or Franklin. Yang was brought up in the peaceful and academically inclined atmosphere of the campus of Tsinghua University, just outside of Peiping, China, where his father was a Professor of Mathematics. He received his college education at the National Southwest Associated University in Kunming, China, and completed his B.Sc. degree there in 1942. His M.Sc. degree was received in 1944 from Tsinghua University, which had moved to Kunming during the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). He went to the U.S.A. at the end of the war on a Tsinghua University Fellowship, and entered the University of Chicago in January 1946. At Chicago he came under the strong influence of Professor E. Fermi. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1948, Yang served for a year at the University of Chicago as an Instructor. He has been associated with the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A., since 1949, where he became a Professor in 1955.
