Rosalyn Yalow Rosalyn Sussman was born July 19, 1921 in the Bronx, New York. In Walton High School she was encouraged to go into a career in science. After high school she went to Hunter College and her educational achievements were amazing. While attending the University of Illinois she met her future husband, A. Aaron Yalow, a physics student. They were married on June 6, 1943 and from then to 1950 they had two children, Benjamin and Elanna.
Her first official position was at the University of Illinois where she was an assistant in physics, she held that position from 1941 to 1943. From then all the way to now she has had many exiting jobs and positions
In 1950 she started to work as a physicist and assistant chief in the radioisotope unit of the VA hospital in Bronx NY. She made a very good friendship with her colleague, S.A. Berson. In collaboration with Berson, she developed, methods of using radioactive isotopes to investigate physiological systems that allow detection of very small concentrations of biological substances in the blood. These methods are called radioimmunoassay (RIA). RIA is a test that combines the use of radioactive isotopes with immunology to measure hormones, enzymes, and other substances that have such low concentrations in the body that they are impossible to detect with other lab methods.
Yalow and Berson used RIA to show that adult diabetics didn’t always suffer insufficiency of insulin in their blood and that an unknown factor must have been blocking the action of insulin. They also showed that the injected insulin from animals was being inactivated by the diabetic’s immune system.

new COOLjsMenu("site_navigation",SITE_NAVIGATION_MENU_ITEMS); WITI HALL OF FAME Rosalyn S. Yalow Nobel Laureate Rosalyn Yalow is the second woman and the first American-born and -educated woman to win a Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. The award was made in 1977 for the discovery of radioimmunoassay (RIA), a technique that allows scientists to measure minute amounts of many different substances in the blood by tagging them with radioactive tracers. RIA's ability to measure tiny amounts of substances has made more difference in medical research than any technique since the X-ray. This method is used in thousands of laboratories around the world to measure hundreds of substances of biologic interest in blood and other body fluids. Today, RIA is used to measure hormones, vitamins, enzymes, toxins and other substances that prior to this invention were too small for physicians to detect. Ms. Yalow is the recipient of 54 honorary doctorates from universities in the United States and abroad. About the paucity of women in science, she says, "The world cannot afford the loss of the talents of half its people if we are to solve the many problems which beset us."

ROSALYN YALOW: SUMMARY OF HER LIFE Born on July 21, in New York City, New York. Graduated from Walton High School, where a chemistry teacher excited her interest in chemistry. Attended Hunter College, a college for women in New York City. Her interest was diverted from chemistry to physics by the influence of two professors. Believing that good physics graduate schools would not admit women in physics nor provide financial assistance, she took a job as a secretary for a leading biochemist. She attended business school to take stenography, thinking this would provide her with a "back door" to get into graduate school. Left business school to attend graduate school at the University of Illinois after receiving an offer to be a teaching assistant in physics. She was the only woman among the four hundred faculty members at the College of Engineering. To make up for the lack of physics classes offered at Hunter, Yalow sat in on two undergraduate physics classes, took three graduate courses and was a teaching assistant for freshman physics during her first year as a graduate student.

Vital Life Statistics
Rosalyn Sussman Yalow was born on July 19, 1921, in Bronx, New York. She attended college at New York's Hunter College, graduating with honors in physics and chemistry in 1941. Yalow applied for entry in Purdue University's graduate physics program, but she was rejected. Purdue said its reasons were, "She is from New York. She is Jewish. She is a woman." Yalow did not give up. She applied to and was accepted by the University of Illinois. She received her Ph.D. in nuclear physics there. She retired in 1991 and now spends her time calling for more science education, better child care, and various other causes.
Achievements and Awards
Rosalyn Yalow's primary accomplishment involves the creation of a new analytic technique called the radioimmunoassay, or the RIA. This technique allowed quantifying very small amounts of biological substances in body fluids using radioactive-labeled material. This made it possible to diagnose conditions caused by minute changes in hormone levels. RIA was used in 1951 to show that adult diabetics did not always suffer from insuffiency of insulin in their blood and that some unknown factor must be blocking the action of insulin.

Rosalyn Sussman Yalow was awarded the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for an analytical technique called radioimmunoassay (RIA) which accurately measures trace amounts of substances, such as insulin, in the body. She was the first American-born woman to win a Nobel Prize in science. Rosalyn Yalow was born in the Bronx, New York on July 19, 1921. She graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Hunter College in 1941. She was the first woman since 1917 to receive a teaching assistantship in physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she taught and worked toward her M.S. degree in physics. In 1942 she married fellow graduate student Aaron Yalow. Three years later, she received her Ph.D. degree in nuclear physics. While teaching at Hunter College in 1946, she began to volunteer in Dr. Edith Quimby's laboratory at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. Here she gained experience in the application of radioisotopes to solve medical problems. She became a consultant to the Veterans Administration Hospital in the Bronx, during which time she began studying the use of radioisotopes in clinical diagnosis, therapy, and analysis. In 1950 Solomon A. Berson joined her group and remained a collaborator until his death in 1972. They jointly discovered and developed the RIA technique for insulin. Yalow was the first woman to receive the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award in 1976.

Dr. Solomon A. Berson (1919-1972) and Dr. Rosalyn Sussman Yalow (1921- ) co-invented the radioimmunoassay (RIA) in 1959. The radioimmunoassay is a method of chemically analyzing human blood and tissue and is used diagnose illness (like diabetes). RIA revolutionized diagnoses because it uses only a tiny sample of blood or tissue and is a relatively inexpensive and simple test to perform. Blood banks use RIA to screen blood; RIA is used to detect drug use, high blood pressure, infertility, and many other conditions and diseases. For inventing RIA, Yalow won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1977 (Yalow accepted for Berson, who died in 1972). Yalow and Berson did not patent the RIA; instead they allowed the common use of RIA to benefit human health. YO-YO The yo-yo is one of the oldest toys. Yo-yo's have been used as a toy for over 2,500 years, when the ancient Romans played with wooden and metal yo-yo's. The word "yo-yo" may come from Tagalog language (the language of the Philippines), meaning "to come back."
