Wilson, Woodrow
Wilson, [Thomas] Woodrow (1856-1924), thirteenth president of Princeton, was born December 29, 1856, in Staunton, Virginia, the son of Joseph Ruggles Wilson, D.D., a Presbyterian minister. Tommy Wilson, as he was called until after his graduation from college, grew up in Augusta, Georgia, and Columbia, South Carolina. After a freshman year at Davidson College, 1873-74, he withdrew to prepare himself for Princeton, where he matriculated in 1875 as member of the Class of 1879. The next four years were a time of rapid maturing for the precocious youth. He supplemented a meager course fare with an ambitious program of reading; kept a commonplace book of passages from his reading; and organized a student club for discussion of public affairs. His peers recognized his leadership abilities, electing him speaker of the American Whig Society, secretary of the Football Association, president of the Baseball Association (he remained an avid supporter of college sports the rest of his life), and managing editor of the Princetonian.

"Woodrow Wilson stopped using his first name, Thomas, while he was still a boy. Wilson did not learn to read until he was 9 years old. Starting 'late' did not hinder his scholastic career at all. He became a college professor, an author, and president of Princeton University. He was a very good public speaker. Wilson received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in trying to heal the wounds to peace caused by World War One. He did not want the USA to fight in World War One, but was given little choice as German submarines kept sinking American ships.

World War I: The War Effort. top Wilson mounted the most efficient and corruption-free American war effort up to that time. A draft was instituted and functioned smoothly, inducting nearly 3 million of the 5 million men who served in the armed forces. Large numbers of American troops commanded by Gen. John J. Pershing went into combat in France during the summer of 1918, in time to join the counteroffensive that finished the war that fall. On the home front, new forms of government-directed economic organization were introduced under the War Industries Board, headed by Bernard Baruch, while several million dollars were raised through Liberty loan bond drives. The Committee on Public Information used advertising and public relations techniques to arouse popular fervor for the war effort, but espionage and sedition laws also led to widespread curtailment of civil liberties, including the imprisonment of the Socialist party leader and war critic Eugene V. Debs.

Woodrow Wilson Like Roosevelt before him, Woodrow Wilson regarded himself as the personal representative of the people. "No one but the President," he said, "seems to be expected ... to look out for the general interests of the country." He developed a program of progressive reform and asserted international leadership in building a new world order. In 1917 he proclaimed American entrance into World War I a crusade to make the world "safe for democracy." Wilson had seen the frightfulness of war. He was born in Virginia in 1856, the son of a Presbyterian minister who during the Civil War was a pastor in Augusta, Georgia, and during Reconstruction a professor in the charred city of Columbia, South Carolina. After graduation from Princeton (then the College of New Jersey) and the University of Virginia Law School, Wilson earned his doctorate at Johns Hopkins University and entered upon an academic career. In 1885 he married Ellen Louise Axson.
