    Thomas Woodrow Wilson Born: Birthplace:
Staunton, Va. (Thomas) Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton, Va., on Dec. 28, 1856. A Princeton graduate, he turned from law practice to post-graduate work in political science at Johns Hopkins University, receiving his Ph.D. in 1886. He taught at Bryn Mawr, Wesleyan, and Princeton, and in 1902 was made president of Princeton. After an unsuccessful attempt to democratize the social life of the university, he welcomed an invitation in 1910 to be the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in New Jersey, and was elected. His success in fighting the machine and putting through a reform program attracted national attention. In 1912, at the Democratic convention in Baltimore, Wilson won the nomination on the 46th ballot and went on to defeat Roosevelt and Taft in the election. Wilson proceeded under the standard of the New Freedom to enact a program of domestic reform, including the Federal Reserve Act, the Clayton Antitrust Act, the establishment of the Federal Trade Commission, and other measures designed to restore competition in the face of the great monopolies. In foreign affairs, while privately sympathetic with the Allies, he strove to maintain neutrality in the European war and warned both sides against encroachments on American interests.

Wilson, (Thomas) Woodrow
, twenty-eighth president of the United States . Born in Staunton, Virginia, Wilson earned a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and developed strong leadership abilities as a college teacher and as president of Princeton University. He published many books on government and political science. In 1910 Wilson was elected governor of New Jersey, and two years later he gained the Democratic nomination for president. A split in the Republican party between William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt allowed Wilson to win the election of 1912 with a minority of votes. Wilson won reelection in a close race with Republican Charles Evans Hughes in 1916. During the Wilson administration Congress passed the Federal Reserve Act and the Clayton Anti-Trust Act . It broadened the Constitution by passing the Seventeenth Amendment allowing the direct election of senators, the Eighteenth Amendment establishing Prohibition , and the Nineteenth Amendment giving women the right to vote. until 1917, and in January 1918 issued his Fourteen Points as a basis for a just peace settlement, which included the formation of a League of Nations . He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919. Congress later refused to commit the USA to the League. New Freedom programme, and was re-elected in 1916. He also instituted a federal income tax, the first since the Civil War. A champion of peace and neutrality, he strove to keep the USA out of World War I, a policy popular with most Americans. However the German U-boat campaign, sensationalized by the sinking of the British liner Lusitania (with 128 Americans lost), forced him to declare war in 1917. At the peace conference in Paris he secured the inclusion of the League of Nations in individual peace treaties, but his refusal to compromise on its text contributed to its defeat in Congress. In 1919 Wilson suffered a stroke during a nationwide campaign to gain support for the League and retired from public life.

THOMAS R.PICKERING FOREIGN AFFAIRS FELLOWSHIP
DESCRIPTION OF THE FOREIGN SERVICE
The fellowship program is funded by the United States Department of State and administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation (WWNFF). The Department of State seeks a Foreign Service that represents America in world affairs with citizens who reflect the diversity and excellence of our society. The program seeks to recruit talented students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. The goal is to attract outstanding students from all ethnic, racial and social backgrounds, who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career in the U.S. Department of State. The Program develops a source of trained men and women from academic disciplines representing the skill needs of the Department, who are dedicated to representing America's interests abroad. WHAT IS THE FOREIGN SERVICE It is a corps of working professionals who support the President of the United States and the Secretary of State in pursuit of the goals and objectives of American foreign policy. Foreign Service Officers are "front-line" personnel who can be sent anywhere in the world, at any time, in service to the diplomatic needs of the United States. A career in the Foreign Service requires unusual commitment, uncommon motivation, and the ability to endure hardship with continuance of dedication to advance and defend U.S. interests.

Wilson, Thomas Woodrow
"Show me a hero and I'll write you a tragedy" F. Scott Fitzgerald
Often it is difficult to determine whether a man is significant because of his own deeds or because he happened to be in the right place at the right time. Woodrow Wilson certainly presided over the nation at a memorable time, but his actions were significant and his policies still influence the United States today. His life is more a thought of what could have been, then what came to pass. Still, despite the inconsistencies, errors, and hesitations, Wilson's style and principles were unique. This enables his legacy to shine beyond the shadow of tragedy. From Princeton to President Wilson's rise to power was extraordinary. Few have risen from relative obscurity to world prominence so quickly. In 1909 he was the president of a small, struggling university, in 1918 he was the world's one hope for lasting peace. In 1909 Wilson's progressive programs and innovations as president of Princeton University attracted the attention of the Democratic political machine. They helped elect him Governor of New Jersey, but learned to regret it. Instead of following orders Wilson ended up cleaning house and riding the state house of much deep-seeded corruption. Presidential aspirations cut his tenure as Governor short. His writing, oratory skills, and progressive accomplishments gave him enough visibility to attract Democrats looking for a national leader. A speaking tour designed to test the waters was a rousing success and Governor Wilson stepped into national politics.
