http://www.teenink.com/Past/2003/June/Interviews/NobelPrize.html
S he looks so ordinary that you'd never suspect this middle-aged woman from Vermont is a Nobel Prize in Peace winner. Jody Williams, an activist against landmines in Cambodia, is friendly and down-to-earth. As she greeted the forum of teenagers at Rhodes College Peace Jam, a weekend activity supporting peace and diversity, she listened with genuine interest and concern. After, I talked with her about everything from her background to politics.
How did you get started as an activist?
I went to local rallies when I was younger. Where I'm from, there were only white people and cows. I spoke to an African-American for the first time when I was in my twenties. You have to start somewhere with everything.
What is the greatest global issue facing the country now?
The most depressing in my view is the government's desire to go to war. They are not listening to American citizens or the other members of the United Nations. Military action could be an alternative, but not the first choice. The United States only says, "We don't care what you think." I don't think anyone wants war.
What about the threat of chemical and biological weapons? How does that make you feel?

PHIL PONCE: This year’s peace prize went to the International Campaign to Ban Land Mines and to its coordinator, Jody Williams. The Norwegian Nobel committee used the occasion to call for support of an international treaty to ban land mines. Following this morning’s announcement Russian President Yeltsin said his country would now support the ban. A month ago the United States declined to join more than 90 other countries in the new land mines treaty. The group winning today’s award was formed six years ago. Jody Williams is a longtime international activist. I talked to her this afternoon from Vermont. PHIL PONCE: Ms. Williams, first of all, congratulations. And what was your reaction when you heard you’d received the Nobel Peace Prize?

About Jody Williams
Jody Williams is the founding coordinator of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), which was formally launched by six non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in October of 1992. Williams has overseen the growth of the ICBL to more than 1,000 NGOs in more than sixty countries. She has served as the chief strategist and spokesperson for the campaign. Working in an unprecedented cooperative effort with governments, UN bodies and the International Committee of the Red Cross, the ICBL achieved its goal of an international treaty banning antipersonnel landmines during the diplomatic conference held in Oslo in September 1997. In her capacity as ICBL coordinator, she has written and spoken extensively on the problem of landmines and the movement to ban them. In recognition of her expertise on the issue, Williams was invited to serve as a technical adviser to the UN's Study on the Impact of Armed Conflict on Children, led by Ms. Graca Machel, former first lady of Mozambique.

Presented by The Blues Foundation Jody switched gears sharply, with the catchy, infectious, cheeky song “Wham Bam, Thank You Ma’am” from his Return of a Legend CD. His rich, fluid guitar riffs, great strong vocals, and enthusiasm in getting the crowd to participate in singing the refrain was a highlight of the night. In addition to being an exceptional lead player, Jody is a superb rhythm guitarist, allowing his talented rhythm guitarist, Chris James, ample opportunity to share lead duties. Jody can do so many great sounding things on guitar, all with style and great tone. On “Everybody’s Got to Go” he played great repeating chords, sweetly ringing notes, some quick popping, jazzy guitar riffs, and finished the song off with a smooth guitar flourish. He pointed out that the jazzy blues of “Don’t You Cry” was recorded in his teens. The powerful lyrics delivered with husky passion and great toned guitar made for a great blues sound.

Presented by the Blues Foundation Jody Williams was one of the ground-floor stalwarts of the fifties Chicago blues sound. His guitar work as sideman graced early recordings of Howling Wolf ("Forty Four," "Evil," "Who Will Be Next"), Billy Boy Arnold ("I Wish You Would"), Jimmy Rogers ("One Kiss") and Bo Diddley ("Who Do You Love," "I 'm Looking For A Woman"). His fat and funky tone was a mix of delta rhythm drive and uptown sophistication, with sort of a nasty B B King feel. In 1957 he cut a minor key instrumental single "Lucky Lou" that was to become a classic. He avoided the scene until mid-2000 when he showed up at a Robert Jr. Lockwood tribute gig. Blues fans recognized him and tried to coax him into playing, but he wouldn't be talked into it. But seeds had been planted and he started listening to old tapes. He eventually did a Chicago club gig, and then some festival work in Denmark-soon he was back with a vengeance, and this return album. Several of the his old numbers are revisited, kicking off with the funky "Lucky Lou," one of three instrumental showcases. "You May" is here, along with a number first cut in 1962, "Moaning For Molasses." The latter features guest Sean Costello, who took the tune as title track of his recent CD. Other guests include Rusty Zinn (who was on the Euro gigs) and Tinsley Ellis-they add some guitar tradeoffs and some vocal work as well. Old partner Billy Boy Arnold takes vocal lead on "I'm Coming Back In Again" and adds some blazing harp to "Come On Over To My House". Williams wrote several new tunes, and delivers them in a pleasant singing style, with Charles Brown tinges here and there. A few tunes add a horn section, on the rest Williams is backed by a solid four piece rhythm section.
