Betty Smith Williams, Dr.P.H. R.N., F.A.A.N.: Profile Betty Smith Williams learned from her mother that she could make a difference by becoming actively involved. When Betty was growing up in South Bend, Ind., her mother was always active in social and civic organizations. "I saw very early on how activism and collectivism could impact change," she said. This early example inspired her to lead a life of involvement. In the late sixties, she co-founded the Council of Black Nurses in Los Angeles, and later became a founder and seventh president of the National Black Nurses Association. Today she is president of the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations, which addresses cultural diversity in the nursing profession and the health care status of Americans from diverse cultures. In 1957, Betty began her nursing journey in home health care and later in public health, before becoming a professor at UCLA, University of Colorado and California State University. "Because of my age and the times, I was by myself in a lot of things. I was the first black person to wear the cap of Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western University. And I was the first black person to teach nursing in a California college or university," she said. That's why one of Betty's driving forces has been to promote racial diversity and to get African Americans involved in nursing leadership. She is a role model and mentor for nurses globally. "What satisfies me most is that through my work, and the work of my peers, we have stimulated others to find avenues in nursing," said the avid African art collector.

The U.S. and Europe Must Stop Arming the World's Dictators
by Betty Williams, 1976 Nobel Peace Prize Winner in the July 13, 1997 San Francisco Examiner The House of Representatives approved historic legislation last month, the "Code of Conduct on Arms Transfers." It is intended to stop the sale of deadly weapons - such as fighter planes, helicopters, tanks and M-16s - to countries ruled by undemocratic, repressive regimes. The House and Senate in conference will consider this legislation, which impacts on democratic struggles throughout the world. Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Burlingame, who spoke eloquently on behalf of the code of conduct in the International Relations Committee this year, is likely to be a key player. During the Cold War, the United States and other major Western powers too often extensively armed dictators such as Mobutu Sese Seko in Zaire and Saddam Hussein in Iraq only to see those weapons used to kill civilians and to threaten world peace. Six years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the time is ripe for curbing this dangerous proliferation of weapons throughout the globe.

Home Up True-to-Life Exhibits Museum Collections ... We Are Expanding by Chelsee Tuni I interviewed my grandmother Betty Ann Thomas Williams because I think my grandmother is very special and I love her very much. She has also lived a long time and can remember a lot of things about when she was growing up before there was electricity, telephones, television and very few people drove cars. She said during the time she was growing up, the trains would pass by her house a lot. My grandmother said she was a very hard worker when she was my age. She also said she still likes to keep busy and help other people. My grandmother’s name is Betty Ann Thomas Williams and she is 63 years old. My grandmother is ½ Paiute and ½ Shoshone Native American Indian. She was born in Mina, Nevada, on October 17, 1937. Her mother’s name was Helen Leona Bell who was a Paiute lady from Schurz, Nevada and a very good mom. She died on March 19, 1979. Her father’s name was Ed Thomas who was a Shoshone from Berlin, Nevada. He died in February of 1950. My grandmother said her mother was a homemaker who stayed at home and took care of her children and also did housework for many families while living in Reno. Her father worked in the Southern Pacific Railroads for many years. The railroad went from Las Vegas to Reno every day and it was the main way to carry goods because there were not a lot of truck drivers back then.

    b. July 9, 1929 bp. Madison Co., Tenn. m. 1950, Hubert Howard Williams, b. Betty Juanita is the youngest of the Watlington-Hammond siblings and took characterstics of the Hammond lineage in her short stature. She was born at home in the little box house beside the spring branch where the family had lived since 1913. The following year Grandfather Hammond died and plans were made to relocate the family to the larger Hammond home a few hundred yards across the fields. Betty was very young during the worst of the Depression years but even so knew what they meant to the family. In years when cash was very scarce, oranges and apples were great Christmas gifts, and even common candies were a luxury. She grew up under the careful stewardship of Aunt Mai Hammond and her sister Evelyn as well as her mother Jennie. After critical surgery in 1934 she responded well and was ready for school at age 6. She attended Malesus Methodist Church with the family and Malesus High School for twelve years of public education. Her brother Paul helped finance a piano and lessons so she could learn to play. She studied under Mrs. Judd Brooks of Jackson, Tenn. where Janice Threadgill also took lessons. She was an honor student of her high school class and progressed rapidly in her music which she has continued to use in her local church work.

These episodes are from the last RTH series, after Marty Feldman had given up writing RTH. The standard is not quite up to classic Took and Feldman but these are the episodes I remember listening to as a schoolboy in the late 60s. I doubt whether I understood all the double entendres then but we all thought RTH was brilliant - and filthy! "Hornographic film productions" seem quite tame now! Plenty of laughs here and Williams Paddick and Marsden are their usual brilliant selfs - Douglas Smith also contributes wonderfully. But Kenneth Horne holds it all together and he (alas) was irreplaceable. The last episode in this collection, which is the last RTH ever made, is very poignant with all the usual characters coming on to say their farewells (it was the end of the series) and Julian and Sandy provoke gasps of amazement with a stunning revelation.
Brilliant comedy, window into all sorts.
