Greg and Nobel Peace Laureates Betty Williams and Archbishop Desmond Tutu 2 Nobel Laureates urge racial harmony in South Florida
By LEON FOOKSMAN Sun-Sentinel
Web-posted: 12:05 a.m. Dec. 6, 1999 DELRAY BEACH The hand-clapping choirs sang and stomped their feet, their voices rising into the night over the city's stadium. Then came the colorful, feather-clad Native Americans who danced across the stage to a pulsating drumbeat. They provided the backdrop Sunday for an "Evening of Unity" that featured two Nobel Peace Prize laureates issuing a call for racial harmony and understanding in South Florida's divided communities. "We have to stand up against injustice and oppression and all kinds of evil that flows from that," retired Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu told about 3,500 people gathered at the Delray Tennis Center to hear him and fellow Nobel laureate Betty Williams. "You're going to have to dream, dream, dream and say we want to reach out to the skies," Tutu added, "for the skies are unlimited." Introducing him was Williams, an Irish Catholic now living in Western Delray Beach who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for her work trying to defuse that region's decades-long troubles. Sunday's show was an effort to raise money for her international child advocacy group.

THE NOBEL FOUNDATION
Nobel Lecture
by Betty Williams
Nobel Peace Prize 1976 December 11, 1977 at Oslo City Hall, Oslo, Norway I stand here today with a sense of humility, a sense of history, and a sense of honour. I also stand here in the name of courage to give name to a challenge. I feel humble in officially receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, because so many people have been involved in the campaign that drew such attention to our leadership that an award like this could justifiably be made. Mairead Corrigan and I may take some satisfaction with us all the days of our lives that we did make that initial call, a call which unlocked the massive desire for peace within the hearts of the Northern Irish people, and as we so soon discovered, in the hearts of people around the world not least in Norway, the generosity of whose people to our cause is the main reason for our current ability to expand our campaign. But unlocking the desire for peace would never have been enough. All the energy, all the determination to express an overwhelming demand for an end to the sickening cycle of useless violence would have reverberated briefly and despairingly among the people, as had happened so many times before if we had not organised ourselves to use that energy and that determination positively, once and for all. So in that first week Mairead Corrigan, Ciaran McKeown and I founded the Movement of the Peace People, in order to give real leadership and direction to the desire which we were certain was there, deep within the hearts of the vast majority of the people, and deep even within the hearts of those who felt, perhaps still do, feel obliged, to oppose us in public.

http://www.buttonwoodwinery.com/betty.html
On November 30th, 1998 Buttonwood's founder, Betty Williams, turned eighty years old. We thought we would slightly part the veil of privacy that Betty lives behind and give you a glimpse of this wonderful woman. On a recent visit to Buttonwood Farm, you might have seen her walking through the fields adjacent to the tasting room. She's a striking figure: tall and straight, hat on head, walking stick in hand with dog Katie at her heel. Or perhaps you've exchanged a word or two with her as she works her magic with flowers and greenery in the tasting room. Then again, maybe you've never caught a glimpse or stopped to chat with her at all. But if you've been to Buttonwood, you've certainly felt her presence because Buttonwood is very much Betty Williams' home and represents the fulfillment of her lifelong pursuits and dreams.
Although it's a comfortable fit, Buttonwood hasn't always been Betty's home. If you detect the remnants of a drawl in her voice, you’re sensing her Louisiana heritage. Betty's youthful days were flavored with a Southern pace of life, local politics dominated by Huey Long, and two strong individuals as parents. Miss Delphine, Betty's mother, was a creative and enterprising woman. Her creativity found expression through gardening, gourmet cooking (see "Miss Delphine's Cook Book" in our tasting room), interior design, renovating buildings in the Audubon District of New Orleans, and being a consummate hostess. Betty's father encouraged her to think for herself and never questioned the idea that her achievements wouldn't match her abilities. He also stressed the importance of social and environmental responsibility and supported her participation in the family business.

World Centers of Compassion for Children International is a non-profit organization founded by Nobel Peace Laureate Betty Williams in March 1997. With the support of other Nobel Peace Laureates and Betty’s reputation for almost thirty years of peace work following receipt of the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize for her work in Northern Ireland, WCCC held a “Mothers of the Earth for World Peace” Summit in Vienna, Austria in June 1997. The purpose of the Summit was to adopt the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the World’s Children. The Declaration was unanimously endorsed by the delegates, who included many First Ladies and representatives of children’s organizations worldwide.

Nobel Peace Laureate In 1976, along with Mairead Maguire, Betty Williams was Peace Prize and the People’s Peace Prize of Norway for her work against violence in her native Northern Ireland. Together they founded the Community of Peace People, an organization which is still involved in the betterment of life in Northern Ireland. But, as Mrs. Williams herself has said many times, the Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded for what one has done but for what one will do. She has traveled the globe recording the testimonies of children who have been subjected to horrors beyond belief. It is evident to Mrs. Williams that governmental legislative changes must be implemented in the direction of the protection of children. For this reason she has enlisted the support of many of her fellow Nobel Peace Laureates and has traveled with them in many troubled spots throughout the world where the cause of peace and especially the safety and well-being of children is at risk.

Olympia (Betty Lou Williams)
Pen and ink, 7.25 x 8 inches, 1999

Betty Lou Williams was a lovely and shapely woman who just happened to have the body of a misshapen parasitic twin attached to her side. When in public, Betty Lou would wear a large maternity garment, so nobody would look twice; but she would often appear on stage in some sort of revealing costume.
Betty Lou was born Lillie B. Williams to a poor family in Albany, Georgia, on 10 January 1932. At the age of two, she was already earning $250 a week when she debuted in Robert Ripley's first "Believe-It-Or-Not" Odditorium at the 1934 World's Fair in Chicago (more information about which may be seen here , including a postcard of the infant Betty Lou). Betty Lou would earn enough money during her career to buy a large homestead for her parents and send all twelve of her siblings to college.
Despite doctors' predictions that Betty Lou would would live a long and healthy life, she died in 1955 due to complications following an asthma attack.
Betty Lou's unswerving gaze and coquettish smile put me in mind of Manet's proud Olympia , so here I pay honor to them both.

Betty Williams Says Protect The Innocents
Peace prize winner: Protect the innocents
    By Nicole Sterghos Brochu
    Sun-Sentinel
    September 16, 2001
WEST PALM BEACH When Betty Williams learned of Tuesday's terrorist attacks, her first reaction was, "Nuke 'em!"
And this from a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
"I'm not going to lie to you and tell you I haven't been feeling very violent this week," Williams told about 200 South Florida high school students gathered for an annual student council meeting in West Palm Beach on Saturday.
Williams, who won the 1976 peace prize for efforts to end strife in Northern Ireland, said it was natural, even human, to want to avenge Tuesday's devastating bloodshed. Even so, she said, America must avoid meting out punishment that may harm innocent people.
"We have to remember that when the first bomb is dropped [in retaliation], there will be young people like you underneath it. Innocents," she said, her voice thick with an Irish brogue.
"There has to be a reaction to this. There's no way around it. Let's hope we respond in a way that will not perpetrate on others what we have suffered."
