Betty Jo Williams
The San Diego Zoological Society is an important trend setter throughout the world in a great spectrum of scientific, reproductive, and animal and botanical conservation achievements. The Society is respected throughout the world...a respect that was earned. Betty Jo Williams is one of those who make these achievements and respect continue to grow. She is the first woman President of the Zoological Society and was responsible for bringing the rare giant pandas to San Diego from the People's Republic of China. Betty Jo has been on the Board of Directors of the Zoological Society since 1979. Her professional expertise and great love for and belief in the Society made her election to President in 1986 a natural step. Over the next three years she would participate in such notable accomplishments as the society's continuing financial independence, setting new records in membership growth, increased recognition by scientific and zoological communities of The Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species (CRES), along with the first captive California Condor egg laid and successfully hatched. The Wild Animal Park and the San Diego Zoo bring joy to over five million people from all over the world every year. They provide educational opportunities for children, many of whom will grow up to be involved in animal husbandry, all of who will hopefully grow up to be conservationists. They provide us all with the opportunity to witness animals in their natural setting that many would never otherwise have an opportunity to see. Betty Jo is a part of all that; she helps make it happen.

Born:
4 February 1920
Siblings:
Maggie
Married:
  • Cyril Turpin (d: February 1974)
  • Billy Williams (20 October 1995, St Mary's parish church) (d: 3 November 1997) Children: Gordon Clegg (b: 20 May 1950; f: Ted Farrell
    Played by: Betty Driver
    First appeared:
    2 June 1969
Betty is a lynchpin of the Rovers Return. Although she has mellowed in recent years, she has never suffered fools gladly, and has always had a keen ear for gossip. Anyone crosses Betty at their own peril. Betty worked in a mill after leaving school (Clackers Lane Elementary and Senior Schools), and worked in a munitions factory in the Second World War. After the war she became a schools meals assistant.
Betty first appeared offering to help her sister Maggie Clegg run the Corner Shop, and moving into the shop flat with her husband Cyril . Maggie greatly resented her bossy older sister trying to run her life and she quickly took advantage of Annie Walker 's holiday in Majorca (as winner of the perfect Landlady competition) by persuading Jack Walker to give Betty a barmaid's job at The Rovers. Very soon there was friction between no-nonsense Betty and Annie with her airs-and-graces, and by Christmas 1969, Betty was sacked. She immediately got a job at the Flying Horse, and only returned to The Rovers after wringing an apology out of Annie.

BETTY WILLIAMS In 1976, along with Mairead Maguire, Betty Williams was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work against violence in her native Northern Ireland. Together, Williams and Mairead founded the Community of Peace People, an organization which is still involved in the betterment of life in Northern Ireland. But, as Williams herself has said many times, the Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded for what one has done but for what one will do. For more than twenty years she has traveled the world, working with fellow Nobel laureates in trouble spots throughout the world where the cause of peace, and especially the safety and well being of children, is at risk. Williams moved to the United States in 1981 and has traveled extensively throughout the country. She has been honored with the Schweitzer Medallion for Courage, the People's Peace Prize of Norway, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award, the Eleanor Roosevelt Award, and the Frank Foundation Child Care International Oliver Award. In 1992, Governor Ann Richards of Texas appointed Williams to the Texas Commission for Children and Youth. In 1995 she was awarded the Rotary Club International "Paul Harris Fellowship." Williams currently serves as President of World Centers of Compassion for Children, Chair of The Institute for Asian Democracy in Washington, D.C., and Visiting Distinguished Scholar at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. William's vision is to save the world's children by creating safe havens where they will be fed, sheltered, nurtured, and encouraged to grow to their fullest potential. This vision is becoming manifest through the work of

    Betty Williams
Northern Irish peace activist who, with Mairead Corrigan, founded the Community for Peace People in 1976 and with her shared the 1976 Nobel Prize for Peace.
Williams, an office worker and wife and mother, took little part in public life until August 1976, when she witnessed an incident that moved her to speak out. An Irish Republican Army terrorist was shot by British troops while fleeing in a car; the car went out of control and struck several people, killing three children. Williams immediately began circulating petitions in Protestant neighbourhoods calling for an end to sectarian violence. This activity soon brought her into association with Mairead Corrigan, an aunt of the slain children, who had been similarly galvanized into action. Together they founded the Community for Peace People to provide services for victims of the Northern Ireland conflict. In 1978 Williams and Corrigan resigned their positions of leadership in the Community and by 1980 had become estranged. In 1982 Williams married and moved to Florida, in the United States.
