About the Current Molecule of the Day The text on this page will change as the "Molecule of the Day" changes, so come back frequently. This first molecule is known as Wilkinson's catalyst, after Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson ( Nobel Prize 1973 , died 1976). Use the 2-D rendering in Chime to figure out what metal is present at the center of the molecule. This molecule is used as a catalyst in the hydrogenation of carbon-carbon double bonds. A short Quick-Time movie showing the mechanism of the hydrogenation process is available here . (This requires the Quick-Time plug-in , available on almost all computers.) Because of the bulky triphenylphosphine groups on the Wilkinson catalyst, double bonds that experience a lot of crowding are not easily hydrogenated. In the figure below, the two molecules on the left both hydrogenate to the same molecule (shown on the right) - only one of the two double bonds is positioned appropriately to interact with the catalyst. (Remember that the catalyst is specific for hydrogenating carbon-carbon double bonds. Are all of the double bonds in this molecule between two carbon atoms?) Here are Chime images of

F.A. Cotton - BIOGRAPHY (Auto- ?)
September 2001.
(Source: Cotton's Faculty page, brought into HTML, unchanged)
His research has dealt with nearly every important phase of inorganic chemistry, especially the chemistry of the metallic elements, and he was also a pioneer in the structural chemistry of enzymes. His investigations have resulted in more than 1500 research publications and reviews. He has made major contributions to the area of metal carbonyl compounds and organometallic compounds and his work on the structure of staphylococcal nuclease was one of the first high resolution enzyme structure determinations. This structure today provides the basis for extensive studies of enzyme catalysis employing site-specific mutagenesis. His greatest contributions, however, are in the field of metal-metal bonding, where, beginning in 1962, he discovered the existence of double, triple and quadruple metal-metal bonds, as well as a host of compounds containing metal atom clusters with single bonds.
In the course of his work on compounds with multiple metal-metal bonds, he has expanded the field from his original recognition that a quadruple bond exists in Re
