September 2001: Breakthrough in Ultra High-Density Data Storage
New work at the Griffith University Scanned Probe Facility by Physicist Dr Sverre Myhra addresses two current limitations of high density data storage technology:
  • Data storage devices based on magnetic or optical effects have reached their technical performance limits.
  • The technologies used to manufacture ultra high-density circuits have reached their technical performance limits.
  • Dr Myhra has achieved the in-principle demonstration of a fundamentally different mechanism whereby bit densities of the most common data storage medium can be increased by a factor of 1,000 or more, using the technique of "nano-writing". Nano-writing can also be adapted to the fabrication of integrated electronic circuits with device densities at the sub-100 nanometre level.
    At about 1 micron across (one millionth of a metre), this tiny map of Australia produced by nano-writing is believed to be the smallest ever made.

    Nobelist, physicist Wieman to lecture at CIRTL forum
    (Posted: 10/21/03 Wisconsin Week: October 22, 2003 Nobelist Carl E. Wieman, a University of Colorado physicist, will be the distinguished lecturer for the first forum of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning . Wieman used his Nobel Prize money to create the award-winning Physics 2000 Web site, http://www.colorado.edu/physics/2000/ Famous for his explorations of atoms cooled to just 100 millionths of a degree above absolute zero and the resulting creation of a new form of matter, Wieman will lecture on the interfaces of teaching and research at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in the Wisconsin Union Theater. The forum, to be held at the Edgewater Hotel, includes talks by Joseph Bordogna, deputy director of the National Science Foundation; Lee Shulman, president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching; and Orlando Taylor, dean of Howard University's Graduate School. CIRTL, begun this year with support from NSF, is an initiative to develop a national faculty in science, technology, engineering and math committed to implementing and advancing effective teaching and learning for diverse student audiences.
