Narodil jsem se 26. bøezna 1951 v mìsteèku Corvallis v Oregonu. Nìkolik let pøedtím se moji èerstvì oddaní rodièe, N. Orr a Alison Wiemanovi, ve stylu ponìkud opoždìných pionýrù vydali ve svém ojetém voze na cestu pøes celou zemi, aby se usadili hluboko v lesích v oregonské pobøežní oblasti. Otec zaèal pracovat v døevaøském prùmyslu a témìø po celou dobu mého dìtství pracoval na pile. Byl jsem ètvrtým z pìti dìtí. Velkou èást dìtství jsem strávil v oregonských lesích, kde bylo døevaøství jediným prùmyslem. Snad nìco z mého nezávislého ducha pochází z toho, že jsem vyrùstal daleko od jiných domù a mìst. Od nejbližšího malého obchodu nás vždycky dìlilo mnoho mílí nedláždìných horských cest. Jedny z prvních dìtských vzpomínek jsou dlouhé cesty školním autobusem, kterým jsem tìmi klikatými silnièkami se svými sourozenci jezdil do školy. Brook a já jsme také trávili mnoho èasu nejrùznìjšími projekty, zejména stavbou a prozkoumáváním všech možných vìcí. Myslím si, že mnohé z mého talentu a smyslu pro improvizaci pøi øešení experimentálních problémù má svùj poèátek v onìch domácích projektech. V tomto ohledu mì také inspiroval mùj starší bratr Howard; vždycky rozebíral nìjaké mašinky a stavìl pro své mladší sourozence pøekvapivì složité hraèky. Práce na tìchto individuálních projektech ve mnì vypìstovala velký smysl pro spoléhání na sebe sama a èich pro to, zda nìjaký improvizovaný díl aparatury bude (èi nebude) vyhovovat. Tento smysl èasto postrádám u studentù, jejichž vzdìlání se omezilo na formální výuku.

Dr. Wieman
received his B.S. from MIT in 1973 and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1977. Since 1984 he has been at the University of Colorado , where he is currently a Distinguished Professor of Physics and a Fellow of JILA Dr Wieman has carried out research in laster spectroscopy, with an emphasis on laser cooling and trapping of atoms and the measurement of parity nonconservation (PNC). Recently his group made the most precise measurement of atomic PNC; in the process, they made the first measurement of an anapole moment. He also is studying the properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in a varietyof systems. He is involved in developing new ways to teach physics to non-scientists.

Gornje fotografije dobitnika nisu iz njihove mladosti nego nedavne! Sva trojica relativno su mladi dobitnici: Ketterle (43), Cornell (39), Wieman (50), a otkriæe za koje su nagraðeni nema još niti šest godina, BEC (6). No ne može se reæi da je Švedska akademija nešto previše požurila. Otkriæe BEC-a (BEC - Bose-Einstein condensate) 1995. u potpunosti je promjenilo, ne samo jedan ogranak fizike - atomsku i molekularnu fiziku nego unijelo velik polet u fiziku i znanost opæenito. Ponovno je potvrðena stara istina da ništa u fizici i znanosti nije gotovo i da svaku generaciju istraživaèa èeka dovoljno novih izazova.
Stotine fizièara u desecima laboratorija iz èitavog svijeta od 1995. godine rade fiziku novog stanja materije, u kojem atomi gube svoju individualnost, ali kao kolektiv pokazuju sasvim nova, dosad nezamisliva svojstva. Atomski laser, analogon svjetlosnog lasera, kao izvor koherentnih atoma jedan je od neposrednih rezultata otkriæa BEC-a. Usporavanje i zaustavljanje svjetlosti, laboratorijsko simuliranje crnih rupa ili supernova- Bosenova, samo su neki pojmovi koji su se poèeli pojavljivati proteklih godina.

By Briana Collins '03 It's all about a "superatom" that behaves like an individual atom only at an incredibly frigid100 billionths of a degree above absolute zero (minus 459.67 degrees Fahrenheit). The temperature needs to be that incredibly frigid to slow the atoms down enough to get them to "fall" into the superatom. This superatom a completely new form of matter is called Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) after Albert Einstein, who in 1924 predicted that when atoms slow down in extreme cold they lose their 'identities' and coalesce into one single atom. He based his prediction on the work of renowned Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose. Nobelist Carl Wieman lectures in Schwartz Auditorium on Oct. 9. Robert Barker/University Photography Last year, Carl E. Wieman, a Distinguished Professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder, won the Nobel Prize in physics for his work with BEC. On Oct. 9 Wieman gave the second of his two Bethe Lectures at Cornell in Schwartz Auditorium of Rockefeller Hall, appropriately titled "Bose-Einstein Condensation: Quantum Weirdness at the Lowest Temperature in the Universe." Wieman, with his co-discoverer of BEC, Eric Cornell of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, led a team of scientists in the late 1980s in experiments to achieve the extremely cold temperature the closest to absolute zero ever recorded.

Pro tio, unu el la du klasoj de partikloj nun nomigxas laux li: bosonoj (la alia klaso estas la fermionoj). Einstein tuj akceptis la laboron de Bose kaj aplikis gxin ne nur al lumo, sed ankaux al materio, al atomoj. Li konkludis, ke sub certaj kondicxoj, parto de iu gaso kondensigxu en novan staton de materio (apud la gasa, flua kaj solida). Tiun staton oni nomas hodiaux Bose-Einstein-kondensajxo, kaj gxi karakterizigxas per tio, ke cxiuj gxiaj atomoj estas nedistingeble en la sama stato. (Inkluzive de iliaj lokoj, t.e. cxiu atomo en la kondensajxo okupas samtempe la tutan spacon kiun gxi dividas kun la aliaj atomoj!).
