"Probatum est per me":
The Heidelberg Electors as
Practioners and Patrons of the Medical and Magical Arts

Excerpt
By the time of the Thirty Years' War, when its volumes were carried off by the Austrian commander Tilly and then transported to Rome, the Bibliotheca Palatina contained almost 10,000 works. The works confiscated included not only the volumes of the various libraries of Heidelberg University, founded by Ruprecht I in 1386, but also the personal collections of the Palatine electors. The extensiveness of the collection and the uniqueness of many of its holdings attest to the importance of Heidelberg as a center of learning during the later Middle Ages and the early modern era. This study focuses on the types of medical manuscripts obtained for the Bibliotheca Palatina and examines the contributions and interests of three generations of electors: Philipp der Aufrichtige (Philip the Upright, d. 1508), Ludwig V (d. 1544), and Otto Heinrich (d. 1559). Their initiatives reflected prevailing contemporary attitudes toward the medicaland what might be considered today as pseudo-medicalsciences and shaped the tradition of medical manuscript collecting and copying in Heidelberg in the sixteenth century. In addition, with electoral impetus and support Heidelberg became a locus for the pursuit of alchemcial remedies and experiments by mid-century. . . .
In addition to his interest in alchemical writings, Otto Heinrich had a long-standing curiosity regarding astrology and other secret sciences; for example, some twenty years before he became elector, he had consulted astrologers concerning favorable days to conduct political meetings.

    Heinrich Otto Wieland
1927 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Heinrich Otto Wieland German organic chemist awarded a Nobel prize 1930 for his investigations of the constitution of the bile acids and related substances.
Clinically, measurement of serum bile acids can be important to veterinarians as a screening tool for hepatobiliary function. Normally, animals will produce bile acids from cholesterol in their liver and store it in their gall bladder. Bile salts are formed in the hepatocytes by a series of enzymatic steps that convert cholesterol to cholic or chenodeoxycholic acids. The rate limiting step is hydroxylation at the 7-alpha position. These reactions include the activity of 8 enzymes belonging to either monooxygenase or dehydrogenase enzyme classes. These acids are then conjugated with glycine or taurine and secreted as Na+ (or K+) salts. Conjugation causes a decrease in their pKa values, making them more water soluble.
The bile acids will then be released into the small intestine via the bile duct during intestinal contraction and play an integral role in the absorption of dietary lipids and lipid soluble vitamins. In most species, more than 90% of the bile salts are actively reabsorbed (by a sodium-dependent co-transport process) from the ileum into the hepatic-portal circulation from where they are cleared and resecreted by the liver to once again be stored in the gall bladder. This secretion/reabsorption cycle is called the Enterohepatic Circulation.

    Warburg, Otto Heinrich (1883-1970),
German biochemist. Warburg is considered by some the most accomplished biochemist of all time. He received doctorates in both medicine and chemistry. After World War I he began investigating the process by which oxygen is consumed in the cells of living organisms. He introduced the use of manometry as a means of studying the rates at which slices of living tissue take up oxygen. His research led to the identification of the role of the cytochromes. In 1931 Warburg was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his research on respiratory enzymes. He also investigated photosynthesis and was the first to observe that the growth of malignant cells requires markedly smaller amounts of oxygen than that of normal cells.
