Centenary of the birth of Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton
Press release October 2003
October 6th is the centenary of the birth, in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, of E.T.S. Walton, the only Irish person to be awarded a Nobel Prize in Science. A 57 cent commemorative stamp was issued by An Post last month to mark the centenary. The Department of Physics, Trinity College Dublin, with which he was associated for most of his life, is celebrating the centenary of his birth with a day of events on Friday 17th October. This will include
  • a commemorative lecture by Brian Cathcart of Kingston University, London, the launch of a new biography of Walton by Professor Vincent McBrierty of Trinity's Physics Department, a charity concert in the evening, given in the College Chapel by members of the Department.
Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton entered Trinity College as an undergraduate in 1922, where he obtained a double first class degree in Physics and Mathematics. In 1926 he went to Cambridge to work with the 'father' of nuclear physics, Ernest Rutherford. Walton, in collaboration with John Cockcroft, achieved worldwide fame there in 1932 when he split the nucleus of the atom by artificial means, beating other physicists in the United States who were embarked on a similar mission. As a result Walton achieved at least five separate major successes:
  • He verified the most famous equation in Physics, Einstein's prediction of the equivalence of mass and energy, E = mc

Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton
(1903 - 1995), Nobel Laureate in 1951
Irish physicist, corecipient, with Sir John Douglas Cockcroft of England, of the 1951 Nobel Prize for Physics for the development of the first nuclear particle accelerator, known as the Cockcroft-Walton generator.
After studying at the Methodist College, Belfast, and graduating in mathematics and experimental science from Trinity College, Dublin (1926), Walton went in 1927 to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was to work with Cockcroft in the Cavendish Laboratory under Lord Rutherford until 1934. In 1928 he attempted two methods of high-energy particle acceleration. Both failed, mainly because the available power sources could not generate the necessary energies, but his methods were later developed and used in the betatron and the linear accelerator. Then in 1929 Cockcroft and Walton devised an accelerator that generated large numbers of particles at lower energies. With this device in 1932 they disintegrated lithium nuclei with protons, the first artificial nuclear reaction not utilizing radioactive substances.
After gaining his Ph.D. at Cambridge, Walton returned to Trinity College, Dublin, in 1934, where he remained as a fellow for the next 40 years and a fellow emeritus thereafter. He was Erasmus Smith professor of natural and experimental philosophy from 1946 to 1974 and chairman of the School of Cosmic Physics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies after 1952.

Norweigan ethnologist and adventurer who organized and led the famous Kon-Tiki (1947) and Ra (1969-70) transoceanic scientific expeditions. Both expeditions were intended to prove the possibility of ancient transoceanic contacts between distant civilizations and cultures. The Kon Tiki voyage from Peru to Polynesia was a 101-day, 4,300-mile drifting voyage on the 40-square-foot raft, a replica of pre-Inca vessels. He wished to show that Polynesia's first settlers could have come from South America. Few scholars at the time, and almost none today, endorsed the idea. They discount the Heyerdahl hypothesis largely on linguistic, genetic and cultural grounds, all of which point to the settlers having come from the west, not the east. Born 25 Jun 1907; died 11 Feb 1973
Johannes Hans Daniel Jensen was a German physicist who proposed the shell theory of nuclear structure of protons and neutrons grouped in onion-like layers of concentric shells. He suggested that the nucleons (protons and neutrons) spun on their own axis while they moved in an orbit within their shell and that certain patterns in the number of nucleons per shell made the nucleus more stable. Scientists already knew that the electrons orbiting the nucleus were arranged in different shells. Jensen's model of the nucleus won him a share of the 1963 Nobel Prize in physics (with Maria Goeppert- Mayer, who arrived at the same hypothesis independently in the U.S.; and Eugene P. Wigner for unrelated work.) Throughout the 1950s, Jensen worked on radioactivity. Rupert Wildt Born 25 Jun 1905; died 9 Jan 1976

Cockcroft Walton Voltage Multiplier
This is a schematic diagram for a three stage, full wave Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier. (Named after James Douglas Cockcroft and Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton, winners of the 1951 Nobel Prize in physics for "Transmutation of atomic nuclei by artificially accelerated atomic particles.") The diodes allow the capacitors to charge in parallel and discharge in series. More stages produce higher voltages and lower currents. The no load output voltage is simply the number of stages multiplied by the peak input voltage. For my unit, operating from a 15 kVAC (RMS) neon sign transformer, this works out to 15,000 * (square root [2]) * 3 or 63,600 volts. Here it is hooked up to (and sitting on top of) my 15 kVAC neon sign transformer, with 120 volt input. A point electrode, made from aluminum roof flashing, is suspended over the top electrode and grounded via a 23 megaohm current limiting resistor network. This picture shows a simple electrostatic motor set up and ready to run. The rotor is made from two pieces of aluminum roof flashing, held together with aluminum duct tape and sits on a needle point ground from a piece of 1/8" drill rod. The rod sits in a hole in a piece of 1/2" square copper bus bar, which is connected to the C-W output terminal with a small piece of flashing. Here I am, drawing a very impressive (and loud) 4" arc from the rim of the running motor to a grounded (no limiting resistor) steel sphere.
