Harrison Walker Ellis Remembers John Hannah Gray
by George M. Apperson Harrison Walker Ellis John Hannah Gray EUTAW, ALABAMA, perhaps surprisingly, was the connection between Ellis and Gray, but they were now far separated in time and place, pursuing their ministerial callings with remarkable dedication. Ellis was still a slave when his remarkable intellect began to be recognized. The publicity prompted the Synod of Alabama and Mississippi to raise funds to purchase him, his wife Celia, and their children, Jerry and Martha. Cresswell, who asked $2500.00 for the four, thought he might die before the sale was concluded, so he proposed adding a codicil to his will, giving the Synod possession of Ellis when the money was in hand. He then accepted the funds that had already been contributed. Lectures on Theology Theology: Explained and Defended Human Nature in its Four-Fold State John Gray undoubtedly would have agreed. He led in the organization of the Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis in 1844, and among the charter members was an African American slave!

    About this Edition
This Web edition of The War of the Worlds was prepared in June of 1995 by John Walker . It is based on the Project Gutenberg electronic text (etext) edition, warw11.txt which I obtained from the mirror archive then maintained by L'Association des bibliophiles Universels where you will also find a wide variety of French language public domain texts. Legal notice: This document is in the public domain and may be distributed and used without any restrictions or royalties whatsoever. It is not being distributed under the Project Gutenberg trademark, and Project Gutenberg bears no responsibility or liability resulting from use of this document. (This statement is included pursuant to the "small print" at the start of the original document.) The original ASCII etext was produced by Michael Oltz at Cornell University . Having created an etext and Web edition of Jules Verne's De la Terre à la Lune myself, I'm well aware that 99.9% of the effort goes into producing the original ASCII document; from there to the Web isn't much work at all. It's only because Mr. Oltz contributed the many hours it takes to scan and proofread the original text that you can enjoy it here. Thank you!

    Tel: +44 (0)1223 252701
Fax: +44 (0)1223 252705 I came to Cambridge in 1974 to join the Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry Division of the MRC's Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB). At the time, Fred Sanger was the Divisional head. Part of my efforts as a protein chemist was to validate his new methods for sequencing DNA by sequencing the proteins directly, and to use protein information to interpret the DNA sequences. Thus, we demonstrated the existence of triple overlapping genes in bacteriophage G4 and the modified genetic code in mitochondria. During the DNA sequencing of the genomes of human and bovine mitochondria, I became interested in the enzymes of oxidative phosphorylation. Therefore, since 1978, I have concentrated on studying the structures and functions of the ATP synthase (in bacteria, chloroplasts and mitochondria), and complex I (NADH: ubiquinone oxidoreductase) from mitochondria. Since 1986, I have also collaborated closely with the group of Ferdinando Palmieri at the University of Bari in Italy in studying a family of metabolite transport proteins in the inner membranes of mitochondria.

Home MIDI I enjoy using MIDI to provide accompaniment for my guitar. I also like The Ventures. I sequenced all these files except "Perfidia" which was sent to me by Matt Raymond and modified by me. And when I got stuck on "Nutty", I sent it to Marty Tippens who played the lead part in with a MIDI guitar. Marty also added the lead break on "Night Train". Thanks Raymond and Marty.

    52. ATP Synthase
subunits can then be built into the single particle image to completea three dimensional molecular jigsaw puzzle. Dr. john E. walker.
    http://www.mrc-dunn.cam.ac.uk/research/atpase.html
    ATP Synthase
    Biological energy conversion
In the biological world, energy released by the oxidation (controlled burning) of carbohydrates and fats, and energy harvested by photosynthesis in green plants, are channelled into making the molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is a high energy compound considered to be the universal currency of biological energy. On reaction of ATP with water under closely controlled conditions, a high energy bond is ruptured releasing energy, and producing adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and phosphate. This release of energy is usually coupled to other biological processes, to do work, for example, in the contraction of muscle and in the synthesis of the essential macromolecules of life, nucleic acids and proteins. The ATP molecule is then remade from the ADP and phosphate with further input of energy. The synthesis of ATP is a central process in human nutrition. The energy in the food we ingest is converted into ATP. Each day every one of us of makes, breaks down and remakes in the mitochondria in our bodies an amount of ATP that is about the same as our body weights. The energy in the ATP molecule powers all biological processes. Thus, the synthesis of ATP is essential for life.
    The ATP synthase
In eubacteria, chloroplasts and mitochondria, the synthesis of ATP is carried out by a molecular machine known as ATP synthase. Our aim is to understand the workings of this machine by establishing the details of its structure and by carrying out functional studies by biochemical and genetic methods. We are concentrating mainly on the enzyme from the mitochondria of bovine hearts and from baker's yeast. The mitochondrial enzyme has many features in its structure and mechanism in common with the bacterial and chloroplast enzymes. It sits in the inner membranes of the organelle, where it uses the transmembrane proton motive force (pmf) generated by the oxidation of nutrients.

    A.Walker’s Guide: Land’s End to John o’Groats.
The impersonators have had their say. Now it's time for the real A.Walker to speak: So, you ant to walk the length of the country do you? Well if you think you can just do it next week, think again. The more time you have to plan your adventure of a lifetime, the better, and it will only add to the excitement. It's about 874 miles as the crow flies, and that would involve swimming (I walked 1086 miles). There are lots of things to bear in mind, so in no particular order, here goes. First Questions

    First Questions
There are a few major questions that you need to answer before going too far:
    • Are you going South to North, or North to South? John o'Groats is probably a better place to finish, but things to bear in mind are: the prevailing wind (Southwesterly); the tourist season; the midge season; the grouse shooting season; Long Distance Trail books going South-North; leaving larger mountains in Scotland until your fitter, etc.
    • Will you go alone, or with someone else? Do you know anyone you could put up with for 24 hours a day, for 10 weeks, through thick and thin, or would you get lonely? What happens if one of you sprains an ankle after 200 miles?

AT CONVENTION TIME, John E. Walker is everywhere. He makes sure he sees everything that goes on. So much so, that when he needs to get a better view, he takes along a trademark small stepladder on which he climbs to get a little higher. John E. Walker And, if he needs to do so, Walker does not hesitate to call out instructions to those on the podium and those in the general seating area alike. The reason for his involvement: Walker is the official photographer for Council 2 conventions. The Seattle photographer has taken pictures for Council 2 at every biennial convention since 1989. " He was originally referred to us by a well-known individual in the newspaper business," says Chris Dugovich, Council 2 President and Executive Director. "John has been a wonderful source not only of good pictures, but of good entertainment as well." Walker, 66, began his career as a photographer in 1965 after he had been disabled two years before in a helicopter accident and he was forced to take leave from the Navy.

    Horse Ulcer
    Thursday, 9 August 2001
Horse On the outside, Australia¹s racehorses are a picture of glowing health. On the inside, they're hiding deep, ugly pain. In 1999, researchers came to the shocking realisation that 90% of Australian racehorses are suffering from stomach ulcers. What's more, the ulcers are caused by the way horses are traditionally managed. Yet two years on, who knows about it? And are trainers doing anything to fix it? Dr Jonica Newby investigates this disturbing animal welfare issue. (full transcript...) Reporter: Jonica Newby

Full Program Transcript Narration: These are the elites of Australian racing. Yet despite the best care, the majority of racehorses are suffering a painful disease that would hospitalise a human. And until very recently, we didn’t have the faintest idea anything was wrong.
Jonica Newby: Four years ago, the 3-metre endoscope arrived in Australia. It was the first time, veterinarians had an endoscope long enough to pass all the way past the pharynx, down through the oesophagus, and let them peer deep into the horse’s stomach. And what they saw were holes.
