Therefore, I have to put all of those speeches aside, and take into account the fact that it might start raining at any moment, and to have a briefer speech. Therefore, let me just say a few words, bearing in mind all the conditionings. First of all, let me express my gratitude that you permanently included me in the history of your college. I started thinking what we could have in common, me, being a revolutionary, and you young people. However, I was surprised myself, realizing at the last moment that there are many things that we have in common. You are entering your grown up, mature life in the third millennium, whereas I had the honor and privilege of closing up a certain stage of our history. Of course, to you, Lech Walesa and my Solidarity movement may be as distant as George Washington and his struggle for freedom, however, the two names are associated with a great fight for a very important cause. But since it has actually started raining, let me add just two more sentences.

LECH WALESA       Lech Walesa was born on September 29, 1943 in Popowo, near Wloclawek, Poland. The son of a carpenter, received only primary and vocational education and in 1967 began work as an electrician at the huge Lenin Shipyard in Gda n sk. He witnessed the 1970 food riots in Gdansk in which police killed a number of demonstrators. When new protests against Poland's Communist government erupted in 1976, Walesa emerged as an antigovernment union activist and lost his job as a result. On Aug. 14, 1980, during protests at the Lenin shipyards caused by an increase in food prices, Walesa climbed over the shipyard fence and joined the workers inside, who elected him head of a strike committee to negotiate with management. Three days later the strikers' demands were conceded, but when strikers in other Gdansk enterprises asked Walesa to continue his strike out of solidarity, he immediately agreed. Walesa took charge of an Interfactory Strike Committee that united the enterprises of the Gdansk-Sopot-Gdynia area. This committee issued a set of bold political demands, including the right to strike and form free trade unions, and it proclaimed a general strike. Fearing a national revolt, the Communist authorities yielded to the workers' principal demands, and on August 31 Walesa and Mieczyslaw Jagielski, Poland's first deputy premier, signed an agreement conceding to the workers the right to organize freely and independently.

Scholar's Corner Search Lech Walesa 4/2/98 Fulton, MO Lech Walesa, former president of Poland and winner of the 1983 Nobel Peace Prize, presented the 49th John Findley Green Lecture at Westminster College on Thursday, April 2, in Champ Auditorium. Walesa is best known as leader of the Solidarity movement which led to a social and political revolution in Poland. Two years ago, former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher spoke to us about the fall of the 'Iron Curtain' and the end of Soviet hegemony in Europe," said Wesminster President Jim Traer. "With her address as a backdrop, it is particularly appropriate that we welcome to the Green Lecture podium one of the architects of the new Europe." Walesa, an electrician, burst onto the international stage in 1980 during the Lenin Shipyard strike in Gdansk, Poland. Speaking atop a bulldozer, Walesa rallied demoralized workers to continue to fight for reform. Revitalized by his passion, the strike spread to factories across the nation. The strikers christened the new movement "Solidarity." Walesa's activities were supported by the Catholic Church. In January 1981 he was received by Pope John Paul II in Rome. Relationships with the Polish government, however, worsened. In December 1981 martial law was declared and Walesa was arrested. He spent a year in jail before returning to his job at the Gdansk shipyards in 1982. Under Walesa's leadership, the Solidarity movement defeated the Polish Communist party in 1989. Walesa became the first democratically-elected president of Poland in 1990.

He began working as an electrician in 1961. In the 1970's, when he was working at the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk, he joined protests against the government which eventually led to his being fired from the shipyard. Lech Walesa's visit to the Connecticut State Capitol: April 10, 1996 Lech Walesa, the pioneer of democracy in Poland, addressed the Joint Convention of the General Assembly in 1996. We remember that great occasion in celebration of Poland's entry into NATO. President Walesa was born in 1943 in Popowo, Poland. He trained as an electrician and began work at the Lenin shipyards in Gdansk in 1966. He was imprisoned in 1981 for his union activities and received the Nobel Prize in1983. He was elected president of the Republic of Poland in 1990. He married in 1969 and has seven children. President Walesa led Poland during one of the most difficult periods in its history. The Soviet Union had just collapsed and along with it, 50 years of oppressive rule in Eastern Europe. The transition to freedom was difficult to implement since the citizens of these nations had become dependant on a State system that controlled every aspect of their lives. People were slaves to government because of the corrupt economic and political system. The very opposite of what Marx had intended, servitude, had been achieved. After communism left Poland, people starved. Conditions in the short-term were worse than under the totalitarian regime. This was the challenge that leaders like Walesa faced:

Though he is not well known among kids, he is a politician rated the second best known Pole. He helped Poland to become anti-communistic and defended Polish workers' rights. He lived through horrible times of hardship and poverty. Here is his story, the story of a remarkable leader. The year was 1943; Poland was suffering from World War II. Poland had a communist government, a poor economy and poverty everywhere. Popowo was a small town in Poland northwest of Warsaw; here on September 29, Lech was born while his Dad was off fighting. During these times in Poland most people lived in cities, in 2-3 room apartments, and usually had a diet consisting of apples, potatoes, bread, pork, sausages, stews and dairy products. Christianity was the main religion. Lech had a very hard childhood, especially because his dad died during the war. An average day consisted of getting up, doing chores, going to school, and then returning to work on their small farm. His mother re-married his father's brother, Stanislaw, who was quite strict. Even though Lech grew to be a great politician, he never seemed interested in politics as a child, but more worried about the condition of his family. Through these hard times he often looked to his mother as a role model because she was very hard working and loved her family.
