Lech Walesa
As an electrician and trade unionist in the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, Lech Walesa first came to prominence in 1980 when he led an unofficial strike in protest against a sharp rise in food prices. Industrial action escalated, and Walesa became head of an inter-factory strike committee which succeeded in having many of its demands met. Renamed Solidarity , the movement was outlawed in 1981 after the imposition of martial law by Poland's communist leaders, and Walesa was interned for a year. Conditions eased in 1983 and Walesa travelled abroad to accept the Nobel Peace Prize. A devout Roman Catholic, he was also received by the Pope, a fellow Pole. In 1989 Solidarity was legalized, and was allowed to contest the forthcoming elections. The result saw the return of the Eastern Bloc's first non-communist government. Walesa became president in 1990 but found himself without an answer to Poland's pressing economic problems. Defeated in the elections of 1995, he went back to his old job in the Gdansk shipyards. Despite a strong campaign, he was unable to prevent the yard's closure a year later.

Compositor alemany. Lech Walesa
An outline historical biography
The Solidarity trades union
Lech Walesa (pronounced Vah-wen-sah) was born as the son of a carpenter in a clay hut located in the village of Popow, between Warsaw and Gdansk, Poland, on September 29, 1943. The Second World War was in operation with Nazi Germany being an occupying power. Lech Walesa's father, Boleslaw, was conscripted to dig ditches and died in 1946 from the exposure and beatings he suffered. His mother, Feliksa, seemed to have the most effect on Walesa. The parish priest remembers her as "the wisest woman in the parish."
Walesa was only an average student at his parish school and after graduating from the state vocational school in Lipno, where he learned the electrician's trade, worked as a car mechanic at a machine center from 1961 to 1965. He served in the army for two years, rose to the rank of corporal, and in 1967 was employed in the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk as an electrician.
Poland has had a rather turbulent and unfortunate history in its position amongst powerful neighbours. Once an extensive country, but one which was apt to suffer serious domestic turbulences, by 1800 Poland had been partitioned out of existence with its former provinces being allocated to the Russian and Austrian empires and to Prussia. At several stages in Poland's history the Roman Catholic Church there has served as a focus through which efforts were made to preserve a Polish, and Catholic, nationality. Although Poland had been reconstituted as an independent state between 1921 and 1939 the aftermath of the Second World War saw a Poland with revised frontiers and under the ideological control of Soviet Russia.

Activities / Lech Walesa Mayor McCrory to Honor Lech Walesa During Visit December 13, 2002 Charlotte Mayor Patrick McCrory will met with Lech Walesa, former President of Poland and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, on Saturday, December 14, 2002 to recognize his contributions to promoting Democracy in his country. The Mayor presented Walesa with a proclamation and a crystal box as part of the reception in his honor. The private reception was held to celebrate the awarding of an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree by UNC-Charlotte to Walesa. December 13, 1981 marks the day in history when the Solidarity Labor Movement was "suspended" under Martial Law in Poland and Walesa was interned in a country house for 11 months. In planning for his meeting with Walesa, Mayor McCrory stated, "knowing that freedom and democracy are under siege in many corners of the world, it is an honor to stand with a man who just 21 years ago lead a struggle to gain freedom from communist rule. Mr. Walesa is truly an inspiration for the defenders of democracy and freedom." This event makes Walesa's third visit to Charlotte as the invited guest of NuTech Solutions, Inc. a Charlotte-based company of which Walesa is a member of the Board of Directors.

He served in the army for two years, rose to the rank of corporal, and in 1967 was employed in the Gdansk shipyards as an electrician. In 1969 he married Danuta Golos and they have eight children. During the clash in December 1970 between the workers and the government, he was one of the leaders of the shipyard workers and was briefly detained. In 1976, however, as a result of his activities as a shop steward, he was fired and had to earn his living by taking temporary jobs.
In 1978 with other activists he began to organise free non-communist trade unions and took part in many actions on the sea coast. He was kept under surveillance by the state security service and frequently detained. In August 1980 he led the Gdansk shipyard strike which gave rise to a wave of strikes over much of the country with Walesa seen as the leader. The primary demands were for workers' rights. The authorities were forced to capitulate and to negotiate with Walesa the Gdansk Agreement of August 31, 1980, which gave the workers the right to strike and to organise their own independent union.

Lech Walesa described some policies as communism Former Polish President Lech Walesa has hit out at EU labour policies while guest of honour in Strasbourg.
Mr Walesa compared some EU rules concerning workers from new member states as "communism". The founder of Poland's Solidarity trade union was in France for the first European Parliament session since 10 new member states joined on 1 May. Flags were presented and raised next to those of the 15 older members at a ceremony before the session. Expansion means MEPs are joined by 162 representatives from the new members, who have been observers until now. Mr Walesa has described the EU's expansion as "my lifelong dream... come true". Transition But on Monday, he compared the labour policies to those of the communist regime he had fought against. The present economic solutions, democratic solutions are not from this epoch

Monday, 9 October, 2000, 14:33 GMT 15:33 UK Lech Walesa: Poland's humiliated hero
Lech Walesa's popularity has evaporated over the past 10 years
The man who led Poland's Solidarity Movement to topple communism appears to have fallen completely out of favour with his people. In the country's presidential election, Lech Walesa got less than 1% of the vote. Lech Walesa 1980: Becomes leader of Solidarity 1981: Arrested in anti-democracy crackdown 1982: Released, Polish martial law eased 1983: Awarded Nobel peace prize 1984: Solidarity legalised 1990: Elected president of Poland 1995: Defeated in presidential election 2000: Cleared of charges of working with Communist state police Mr Walesa's tiny showing in the polls would have seemed unthinkable just 10 years ago, when he was swept into office as Poland's first post-communist president. He had risen to prominence a decade earlier, when, as a shipyard worker from Gdansk, he had led strikes which created the first free trade union in communist Poland.

    Lech Walesa
    Nobel Prize for Peace INTERVIEW
    October 28, 2000
    London, England
(Mr. Walesa's interview was conducted with the assistance of an interpreter.) I'd like you to introduce us to Lech Walesa as you were at age ten. Who are you? Where are you living? I live in a village. It's the year 1952-53. So that means it's the post-war time. There is a lot of poverty. I am in the third grade of a primary school. I walk five kilometers to go to school, a long way. Then seven kilometers on foot after school to go to church, and that's every day. What do your parents hope for you at this point? I believe they really cared about survival until the next day, how to make a living. Perhaps they wondered, 'What will he grow into? What kind of a man will he be?" Because I was really a very lively child. I really needed to break at least one window every month, and to get into mischief, so they must have wondered. How many children were there in the family? It was a combined family as I would call it.
My father died on returning from the war, and his brother took care of my mother and of my family, because my father had pledged him to.

"We m u s t be courageous but also reasonable. The world a d m i r e s us for walking a t i g h t r o p e without falling off. It asks us to k e e p our balance ~ Lech Walesa Polish political leader Lech Walesa (1943-) was born on this day in Popowo, north of Warsaw, the son of peasant farmers. He attended trade school and worked as a shipyard electrician where he became a union activist. "Everyone wants a voice in human freedom . There's a fire burning inside all of us," he once said. In 1980, the charismatic Walesa founded Solidarity, an organization of 50 Polish trade unions, that became the first independent, autonomous union in the Communist world. Within months, the movement faced government opposition which eventualy led to martial law and Walesa's brief imprisonment. In 1982, Poland outlawed Solidarity. Power is only important as an instrument for service to the powerless," he said and continued to work for individualism and freedom. " Words are plentiful, but deeds are precious," he said. Walesa won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 for working for human rights through negotiation and peace. He dedicated the award to the 10 million members of the outlawed Solidarity movement.
