Quote: George Wald
In the Jehovah's Witnesses book on Creation/Evolution, we find the paragraph: On the other hand, there is ample evidence to support the conclusion that the spontaneous generation of life from nonliving matter is not possible. "One has only to contemplate the magnitude of this task," Professor Wald of Harvard University acknowledges, "to concede that the spontaneous generation of a living organism is impossible." But what does this proponent of evolution actually believe? He answers: "Yet here we are - as a result, I believe, of spontaneous generation." Does that sound like objective science? Life: How did it get here? , 1985, page 51
Reference to: Scientific American August 1954, page 46 1954 is a long time ago, particularly in an area of science that is advancing rapidly. However, I dug up the article, and discovered that Wald's very next sentence was: It will help to digress for a moment to ask what one means by "impossible." Wald then spends more than a page on how the colloquial meaning of "impossible" is different from the scientific meaning. He argues that the colloquial meaning is the wrong one to use, because the problems are too far removed from what a non-scientist is used to. So, the quoted sentences were strictly rhetorical. Wald was creating a problem, so that he could launch into his answer. The article as a whole is indeed objective science. The reason the quote sounds odd is because it was quoted out of context.

Wald, George (1906-)
Harvard biologist and Nobel laureate who, while allowing that life in the Universe was probably common, argued strongly against any attempt to establish contact with an extraterrestrial race. At a 1972 symposium on "Life Beyond Earth and the Mind of Man," sponsored jointly by NASA and Boston University, he said that he could "conceive of no nightmare as terrifying as establishing such communication with a so-called superior (or if you wish, advanced) technology in outer space." His fear was that human enterprise in arts, sciences, and other fields would come to an end once our race became "attached as by an umbilical cord to that 'thing out there.'" http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/W/Wald/1.html
Wald, George US biochemist who explored the chemistry of vision. He discovered the role played in night vision by the retinal pigment rhodopsin, and later identified the three primary-colour pigments. Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine 1967.
Wald was born and educated in New York. He spent his academic career at Harvard from 1935, becoming professor of biology 1948. In the 1970s he spoke out against the US role in the Vietnam War.
Studying rhodopsin, which occurs in the rods (dim-light receptors) of the retina, Wald discovered in 1933 that this substance consists of the colourless protein opsin in combination with retinal, a yellow carotenoid compound that is the aldehyde of vitamin A. Rhodopsin molecules are split into these two compounds when they are struck by light, and the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase then further reduces the retinal to form vitamin A. In the dark the process is reversed, but over a period of time some of the retinal is lost. This deficiency has to be made up from vitamin A, and if the body's stores are inadequate, night blindness results.
In the 1950s Wald found the retinal pigments that detect red and yellow-green light, and a few years later the pigment for blue light. All these are related to vitamin A, and in the 1960s he demonstrated that the absence of one or more of them results in colour blindness.

George Wald - Biologist from Brooklyn [Elijah Wald home] Robert Johnson] Narcocorrido] [Josh White] ... Other writing One project of mine that has not yet reached fruition is a biography or autobiography of my father, George Wald. In the late 1980s, I taped his memoirs, and have twice tried to work this material up into a book, but wiser heads have informed me that it is not publishable in its current state. I still intend to find a way to get this material into the world, though, as I believe my father to have been a quite extraordinary man. He was known first as a biologist, one of the century's foremost investigators of the biochemistry of vision, and won a Nobel Prize for this work in 1967. (For more information on this aspect of my father's life, I strongly recommend the warm and thorough remembrance by his longtime friend and colleague John Dowling.) I was eight years old at that time, and recall it well, but for most of my life he was less involved in science than in political activism, a change that happened shortly after receiving the prize, when he used the forum this fame gave him to voice his opposition to the war in Vietnam, and the militarization of American life. His new career began literally overnight, when he gave a speech at MIT that was shortly translated into over forty languages, reprinted millions of times, and even made into a record album. (To read this speech, go to A Generation in Search of a Future If I had been interested in writing about this time, we probably would have been able to sell the book, but the problem is that what fascinates me is less my father's political activism which was a matter of keeping abreast of the news, thinking it through, and speaking with stirring eloquence about it than his earlier life, when he was, as he would put it, "getting his hands dirty." His stories of science were not in any way theoretical, but were instead just the thing to entrance a child. And I am not only talking about the stories he told at the dinner table. I was probably six or seven years old when I first heard him give one of his great science lectures (to read a version of it, go to

http://www.elijahwald.com/origin.html
George Wald: The Origin of Death [Elijah Wald home] Robert Johnson] Narcocorrido] [Josh White] ... Return to George Wald Page This was perhaps my father's greatest scientific talk, the perfect balance of genuinely exploratory scientific thought and a popular lecturing style that had earned him a place in Time magazine's cover story on the twenty greatest teachers in America. I only wish I had could include the slides he used to show, which ranged from scientific charts to cartoons from the New Yorker. The Origin of Death For not all living creatures die. An amoeba, for example, need never die; it need not even, like certain generals, fade away. It just divides and becomes two new amoebas. Let us begin with a familiar, singlecelled organism, the amoeba. Its nucleus divides by pinching into two equal halves, then the whole amoeba divides. Thus we have two organisms where we started with one. This is the usual way singlecelled organisms, plant and animal, tend to reproduce, just by simple division: so called fission. Occasionally they do something a little different. Reproduction in the singlecelled organism Paramecium is usually by fission, but sometimes it engages in what we call conjugation. Two organisms, each containing a large nucleus (macronucleus) and a small nucleus (micronucleus), come together sidetoside. Then the cuticle breaks down between them. The macronucleus is by and large the working nucleus. The micronucleus represents a store of genetic material. The next thing that happens is that the macronuclei disintegrate and the micronuclei divide, and something very interesting happens that makes one think a little of sexual reproduction: there is an exchange of micronuclei, of genetic material. Then the Paramecia separate, the micronuclei divide repeatedly, then the Paramecium divides repeatedly. One ends up with eight brand new Paramecia just like the pair with which we started.
