was born in Priluka, Russia on 22 July 1888. Waksman graduated from the Fifth Gymnasium in Odessa, Russia, and came to the United States in 1910 after he was refused admittance to the university because he was Jewish. He entered Rutgers University in 1911, where he worked with another Russian emigre, Dr. Jacob G. Lipman, whose primary research was on soil microbiology. Waksman graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1915 and recieved a Masters of Science the following year, at which time he became a naturalized citizen. In 1916, Waksman married a young woman he had known in Russia, Deborah Mitnik, and entered the University of California at Berkeley to study biochemistry. He received his Doctorate in 1918, having supported his graduate study by working part-time at the Cutter Biological Laboratories in Berkeley, California.

THE WORLD CELEBRITY,
UNKNOWN IN HIS HOMERLAND
Not long ago the funds of the Central Museum of Medicine of Ukraine were replenished with the materials which were kindly sent us from the USA, about an outstanding American scientist Professor Selman Abraham Waksman, who was born in Ukraine. He became in history of medicine as one of the founders of comtemporary microbiology, discovered streptomycin and other valuable drugs, and who was awarded the Nobel Prize. Unfortunately, till recently we knew too little about our famous compatriot, and now we take the opportunity to tell about him more in detail.
S.A.Waksman was born on July 22, 1888 in a small town in Ukraine. By mistake it was considered the town of Priluky, but in fact it was the settlement of Nova Priluka in Kyiv province (now, the village of Nova Priluka, Vinytsia region). In 1910 he finished teaching in the Odessa gymnasium and in the same year he came to the USA. A year after his arrival he entered the College of Agriculture at the Rutgers University (New Jersey) where he studied microbiology of soils. After graduating from the college he worked in the New York research laboratory of soil bacteriology where the master's degree in sciences was conferred on him (1916), and soon he could continue his researches at the University of California, and in 1918 he became a doctor of biology. In the same year he came back to Rutgers University, where from 1930 Waksman occupied the post of a professor.
In 1949 the Institute of Microbiology as a part of Rutgers University was created on the initiative of S. A.Waksman. He headed this institute till 1958, when he went into retirement. Today this institute bears the name of Waksman.

Introduction
This bibliography cites writings through which may be traced the evolution of organic/sustainable agriculture and its pattern of philosophical and scientific aspects. It is not a comprehensive list, but the interested reader will find authors' references, individual bibliographies, and sources within the cited writings which will widen the traced path. Three recent compilations have been of invaluable assistance in the preparation of this bibliography: R. R. Harwood* and M. C. Merrill*, writing in 1983 I and A. M. Scofield* (who wrote a brief article on the origin of the name "organic farming" in 1986) included in their writings citations to selected important works, many of which are cited here. In addition, acknowledgment is made.of the work of the Canadian "Ecological Agriculture Project" (EAP) of the Macdonald College of McGill University, which has also compiled annotated lists of the literature of ecological agriculture and of selected background works of holistic approaches to agriculture. All of the works cited here are in the collection of the National Agricultural Library, and NAL's call numbers are included in the citations. Directly below the call-number is a "cited in" reference which refers to one or more of the following listed authors:

72. Mikrobitautien Antibioottisten Lääkkeiden Alkuvaiheet
Venäläisyhdysvaltalainen maaperän mikrobiologian tutkija selman abraham waksman(1888—1973) havaitsi vuonna 1917, että Streptomyces griseus -sienellä
http://www.saunalahti.fi/arnoldus/antibiot.html
Louis Pasteur Italialainen lääkäri Cantani teki juuri vuonna 1885 kokeita ruiskuttamalla erilaisia bakteereita keuhkotautia sairastavan keuhkoihin.

Someone recently sent me a Dear Abby column they thought I might want to read, and I thought it would be worthwhile to post it here... Genuine anti-semites should accecpt illness DEAR ABBY : I am enclosing an item from your column. Please run it again. People need to be reminded. E.D. Baum, Houston DEAR E.D. : I'm glad to oblige - it's one of my favorites: SAM LEVINSON'S ANSWER TO AN ANTI-SEMITE. "It's a free world; you don't have to like Jews, but if you don't, I suggest that you boycott certain Jewish products, like the Wasserman test for syphilis; digitalis, discovered by a Dr. Nuslin; insulin, discovered by Dr. Minofsky; chloral hydrate for convulsions, discovered by Dr. Lifreich; the Schick test for diptheria; vitamins, discovered by Dr. Funk; steptomycin, discovered by Dr. Z. Woronan, the polio pill by Dr. A. Sabin and the polio vaccine by Dr. Jonas Salk. "Go on, boycott! Humanitarian consistency requires that my people offer all these gifts to all people of the world. Fanatic consistency requires that all bigots accept syphilis, diabetes, convulsions, malnutrition, infantile paralysis and turberculosis as a matter of principle. "You want to be mad? Be mad! But I'm telling you, you ain't going to feel so good!"

H. Corwin Hinshaw Papers
(3.75 linear feet) Ms. Coll. 107 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract
Background note: Hinshaw was the third of six children born to Milas Clark Hinshaw (1873-1955) and Ida Letitia Bushong Hinshaw (1881-1942). He attended Greenleaf Academy in Idaho, and then took his B.S. degree from the College of Idaho in 1923. While at the college, he met Dorothy Youmans (1902-1994) whom he married on August 6, 1924. The Hinshaws had four children; his two sons followed him into medical careers, while one daughter became a zoologist and author, and the other an educator. After spending a year in advanced studies at the University of Pittsburgh, Hinshaw took an M.S. degree at the University of California, Berkeley in 1926, and completed his Ph.D. at the same institution the following year. From 1927-1931, he taught Parasitology and Bacteriology at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon. Returning to the United States, Hinshaw earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1933. He was subsequently recruited to work at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he developed his interest in diseases of the lung. The collaboration of Hinshaw and William Feldman dates to 1938, when the two shared a ride home from a tuberculosis conference in St. Paul, Minnesota. After Selman Waksman and Albert Schatz created the first supply of streptomycin in April, 1944, Hinshaw and Feldman decided to try the drug's efficacy in treating "the white plague" of tuberculosis. The first animal trials, conducted at Mayo with tuberculosis-infected guinea pigs, were amazingly successful and encouraged the researchers to expand experimental treatment to human subjects. Although the initial human trials recorded promising success, it subsequently became clear that the tuberculosis baccilli built up a resistance to the drug over time, and the drug was not the hoped for "miracle cure."
