SELMAN A. WAKSMAN (18881973)
(excerpted with permission from The Foundation for Microbology Selman Abraham Waksman, whose insights and discoveries had so profound an effect on the well-being of people around the world, was born of Jewish parents in the village of Novaya Priluka, Russia (now the Ukraine), on July 22, 1888. His childhood experience with anti-semitism and with the abortive revolution of 1905 convinced him that he could not fulfill his dreams and realize his potential in Czarist Russia. Waksman obtained a Ph.D. in biochemistry in two years, working with T. Brailsford Robertson at the University of California at Berkeley, and returned to Rutgers in 1918 as a lecturer in soil microbiology. He married his childhood sweetheart, Bertha Deborah Mitnik (Bobili), on 4 August 1916. She went with him to California and they returned to live, first in New York, then in New Brunswick, N.J., close to Rutgers. Their only child, Byron Halsted, was born 15 September, 1919. When Waksman began work in his own laboratory, microorganisms were of known importance in medicine as causes of disease, in public health in connection with sanitation problems such as water purification, in traditional food processing (making of bread, cheese, wine, beer, and vinegar) and agriculture (fertility of the soil). They were responsible for food spoilage and, on a larger scale, for degradation of all animal and plant remains, returning the fundamental building blocks carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen to the air and soil in the great cycles of Nature. They were yet to show their value in industrial production of vitamins, enzymes, and antibiotics.

T he Waksman Institute of Microbiology is a free-standing research facilility on the Busch campus of Rutgers University. Only an hour by car from New York City in a rather rural setting of New Jersey that has been named after Selman Waksman
O n June 7, 1954, the official dedication of the new Institute took place, two years after Dr. Waksman received the Noble Prize for the discovery of streptomycin. He was also its first director. At its opening it was an impressive 302-foot long Georgian Colonial style building overlooking the golf course of the University. It harbored 33,000 square feet of usable space which included a lecture hall seating 200 people, a library with 7,000 volumes, a fermentation pilot plant with vessels ranging in size from five to 300 gallons, and such amenities, long since destroyed, as a dining room with a kitchen, a living room and a museum. The bulk of the remainder of the royalties received from the sales of these antibiotics were then used to partially support the Institute of Microbiology.

T he new expansion has stimulated the introduction of interdisciplinary programs with chemical and biochemical engineering, chemistry, computer sciences, and plant sciences. Evolution of the research mission from the early days to today has led from a diversity of disciplines centered around antibiotics to the unified discipline of molecular genetics with a more diverse set of biological problems. Today the Institute employs faculty teams that concentrate on certain classes of organisms amenable to genetic analysis such as bacteria and fungi (

Born 16 Aug 1904; died 15 Jun 1971
Wendell Meredith Stanley was a Spanish-American biochemist , who received (with John Northrop and James Sumner) the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1946 for his work in the purification and crystallization of viruses, thus demonstrating their molecular structure. This work began in 1935 when Stanley crystallized tobacco mosaic virus, the first such purification of a virus. He then believed, incorrectly, that protein was the active agent of the virus. By 1936 he isolated nucleic acids from the tobacco mosaic virus, which later (1955) will be found to cause the viral activity. Hugo Gernsback

American inventor (80 patents) and publisher who was largely responsible for the establishment of science fiction as an independent literary form. In 1926, Hugo Gernsback was the owner of a magazine called Modern Electrics. One day, he found that he had a blank spot in his publication, so he dashed off the first chapter of series called "Ralph 124C 41+." "Ralph" was an amazing success. The 12-part story was filled with all kinds of wild inventions unheard of in 1926, including television (he is

JULY 22 - BIRTHS Edward Farber Born 22 July 1914; died 22 Jan 1982
Edward (Rolke) Farber was an American who invented a portable, battery-operated stroboscopic flash unit for still cameras (1937) that effectively "stopped action." He began his career as a photojournalist on the staff of the Milwaukee Journal. After studying electrical engineering at Northwestern University, Farber went on to design flash equipment for the U.S. Army during World War II, and then established his own electronic-flash manufacturing firm. He was a good friend and collaborator of Harold Edgerton and developed the first practical portable strobe flash for news photographers. In 1942, the Milwaukee Journal became the first newspaper to furnish all of its photographers with the portable flash. Weighing only 13.5 pounds, it was a considerable improvement over the 90-pound units photographers used prior to Farber's invention. He sold his Strobe Research firm in 1954. He was a photographic adviser to the U.S. Government during its intercontinental ballistic missile testing program in the late 1950's. Alexander Calder
