Why Wagner-Jauregg Won the Nobel Prize for Discovering Malaria Therapy for General Paresis of the Insane Edward M. Brown History of Psychiatry , Volume 11, December 2000, 371-382. SYPHILIS AND PARASYPHILIS The riddle of general paresis grew more perplexing with that series of brilliant laboratory findings in the first years of the twentieth century that established conclusively that paresis was caused by syphilis. In 1897 Krafft-Ebing inoculated nine paretics with no history of syphilis with luetic material. When none of them developed symptoms of syphilis, he inferred that they had been previously infected.20 The pathology of paresis was made definite by the work of Nissl and Alzheimer, published in 1904. In 1906 Wasserman introduced a serologic test that not only confirmed the syphilitic nature of active lesions but showed that a latent lesion could be present in an individual. With evidence gained through the use of the Wasserman reaction the relation of paresis to syphilis was rather generally accepted. In 1913 all doubt about the syphilitic nature of paresis was finally eliminated when Noguchi and Moore demonstrated spirochetes in the brains of paretics. Die Historikerkommission, die die Ehrengräber auf dem Wiener Zentralfriedhof zwischen 1938 und 1945 untersucht, deckte es auf , das Magazin "Falter" und der ORF berichteten darüber: Der Nobelpreisträger Julius von Wagner-Jauregg wurde von seiner Nazi-Vergangenheit eingeholt. Er war nämlich ein Rassenhygieniker, der dieses Gedankengut in Österreich bereits vor 1938 massiv propagierte. Er bat handschriftlich um die Aufnahme in die NSDAP. Er wollte die "Geisteskranken und die Menschen mit verbrecherischen Anlagen" von der Fortpflanzung ausschalten, wobei er streng zwischen "arbeitsfähigen" und "nicht-arbeitsfähigen" Behinderten unterschied und davon eine allfällige Sterilisation abhängig machte. Frauenwahlrecht und arbeitende Frauen bezeichnete er als "Entartung". Entsprechend kritisch fiel auch das Gemälde "Die dunkle Seite des Wagner-Jauregg" von Werner Horvath aus. Wagner-Jaureggs Gesicht wird aus Blutkörperchen geformt, zum Teil von normalen, zum Teil von aufgedunsenen, die von Malariaerregern befallen sind. Einige dieser Blutkörperchen platzen bereits und setzen die Malariaerreger frei. Im oberen Bildteil mutieren die Blutzellen dann zu Hakenkreuzformen, vom Künstler "Nazi-Cells" genannt, in Anspielung auf das Gedankengut des Arztes. (Warum übrigens Malaria im Bild? - Nun, die sog. "Fiebertherapie", für welche der Mediziner den Nobelpreis erhielt, bestand in der absichtlichen Infektion der Patienten mit Malaria in der Absicht, die Grundkrankheit - progressive Paralyse als Spätfolge der Syphilis - zu mildern. Angesichts des Originalzitats von Wagner Jauregg "Man könnte sich auf den Standpunkt stellen, dass es für die Allgemeinheit nicht förderlich ist, wenn im Volkskörper eine große Anzahl von Individuen vorhanden ist, die sich der artgemäßen Höchstdauer des menschlichen Lebens nähern" sollte auch diese Leistung nochmals kritisch betrachtet werden! - Speziell stellen sich Fragen nach dem Einverständnis der Patienten und auch bezüglich der Wirksamkeit der Therapie.)
