Också produktionen av mjölkprodukter har varit känd ända sedan urminnes tider. Smör- och ostproduktion har varit den viktigaste delen av vår mjölkhushållning. Man vet att smör och ost har tillverkats hos oss framgångsrikt en lång tid. I Schweiz har ostproduktionen varit känd sen stenåldern och smör tillverkades i Babylon redan 3000 f Kr. I Finland ålades en smörskatt på 1250-talet och på 1550-talet fanns det smör även för export. Den finländska allmogeosten hade ett gott rykte och det verkar som om bondgårdarna i Finland visste hur man gjorde hemlagad ost på 1700- och 1800-talet. Glassen kom till Finland på 1700-talet, fastän den var känd i Kina för mycket länge sedan och i Europa redan 1400 f Kr. Artturi Ilmari Virtanen was born in Helsinki Finland on the January 15 1895. He studied the Classical Lyceum at #redirect Vyborg, Finland. After he finished school, he studied chemistry, biology, and physics. In 1939 he became Professor of Biochemistry at the Finland Institute of Technology at Helsinki and at the University of Helsinki in 1939. His research included partially synthetic cattle feeds, nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the root nodules and improved methods of butter preservation. In 1945 Virtanen became [[Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry, for his research in agricultural and nutrition chemistry, especially for his fodder preservation method (AIV Fodder). The method – which he had published 1943 - improved the storage of green fodder that is important during long winters. Process includes adding dilute hydrochloric or sulfuric acid to newly stored grain. Increased acidity stops harmful fermentation and has no adverse effect on the nutritive value of the fodder or animals that eat it. This article courtesy of Wikipedia .     Born 15 Jan 1908; died 9 Sep 2003
    Hungarian-born American nuclear physicist who participated in the production of the first atomic bomb (1945) and who led the development of the world's first thermonuclear weapon, the hydrogen bomb. After studying in Germany he left in 1933, going first to London and then to Washington, DC. He worked on the first atomic reactor, and later working on the first fission bombs during WW II at Los Alamos. Subsequently, he made a significant contribution to the development of the fusion bomb. His work led to the detonation of the first hydrogen bomb (1952). He is sometimes known as "the father of the H-bomb." Teller's unfavourable evidence in the Robert Oppenheimer security-clearance hearing lost him some respect amongst scientists. R.B. Braithwaite Born 15 Jan 1900; died 21 Apr 1990.

    Finsk sisu bak silo
    Den finske biokjemikeren Artturi Virtanen revolusjonerte konserveringen av dyrefor, og fikk i 1945 nobelprisen i kjemi. Men for å komme fram til den geniale oppfinnelsen, gikk han veien om smør.
    Publisert 13.03.2003 21:29. Artturi Ilmari Virtanen arbeidet i meieribransjen. Hans oppgave var å forbedre smørets kvalitet og salgbarhet i et land der smør er en stor eksportvare. Virtanen oppdaget at dersom man tilsatte natriumfosfat til saltet i smøret, holdt det seg i månedsvis. Det innebar at man kunne lagre smøret, og eksportere når prisene var høye.
    Fra smør til gras
    Den finske biokjemikeren så paralleller til grøntfor. Jo tidligere graset blir slått, jo høyere er proteininnholdet. Høy som er slått og tørket når det er modent, har mindre protein enn ungt gras som legges i silo.
