104th Landon Lecture
February 5, 1996
Good morning. First let me begin with a note of gratitude to this campus. My first postdoctoral fellow was a graduate of your graduate school. One of my best students, Bruce Bowerman, a native Kansan, was a student in my lab for several years, and now is professor at Oregon University in Eugene, and I'm grateful for the instruction and direction he received here. Two things make me particularly glad to be giving this lecture, but one thing first is that I learned about this lecture from the student, Bruce Bowerman, who said he got a good deal of direction in life from the lectures themselves. But this occasion is special for a couple of reasons for me. First it allows me to pay public tribute to Nancy Landon Kassebaum, whose intelligent and generous support of medical research have made my current job a lot more easy, and whose gracious friendship has made life in Washington much more pleasant. Kansas should be, I know is, very proud of her. Secondly, the inclusion of at least two scientists, Carl Sagan and myself, on the Landon Lecture program this year, recognizes the enormous but often overlooked significance of science in the workings of our society. I want to thank the organizers, the organizing committee for featuring science in this way. Now, I learned yesterday that unfortunately Carl Sagan will not be able to speak as scheduled, and so I'd like to begin by usurping a few of his words from his book "Broca's Brain" at the outset.

Dear Dr. Varmus: The American Society for Investigative Pathology is pleased to respond to your E-Biomed proposal. The Society is excited by the prospect of a centralized biomedical pre-print server, but is quite concerned about the feasibility of the peer-reviewed component of E- Biomed. Representing the membership, the councilors of the Society were asked to comment on the proposal and I have summarized below our collective views. Pre-Print Server: The Society fully supports the notion of a pre-print server ("E-Biomed general repository") as a tool for improving the speed and circulation of advances in research. It is suggested that care be taken to consider the possible ramifications of universal access, especially as it concerns clinical material and the "lay" community. The potential liability of misuse of information could well occur and must be guarded against. Single Search Engine: Archival Function: The Society strongly endorses the NIH's efforts to create a central archive for complex data sets and other progressive modes of storing information, such as videos. The NIH has demonstrated success in this area with GenBank and is a logical choice for archiving other materials responsibly and effectively.

Varmus, Director of the National Institutes of Health and co-recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, will be the next President and Chief Executive Officer of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Douglas A. Warner III, Chairman of the Boards of Overseers and Managers of Memorial Sloan-Kettering, made the announcement. Effective January 2000, Dr. Varmus will succeed Dr. Paul A. Marks. Dr. Marks has served as President and Chief Executive Officer since 1980 and announced his plans to step down late last year. "Harold Varmus combines an extraordinary understanding of the biology of cancer and sensitivity to the clinical needs of cancer patients with the vision to take our great institution into the next century," said Mr. Warner. "Dr. Varmus has a strong appreciation for Memorial Sloan-Kettering's three-pronged focus on research, education, and patient care and is a gifted leader," Mr. Warner continued. "We are very pleased that he will continue his 30-year commitment to the control and cure of cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering."

NEW YORK, May 10, 2002 - Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center President Harold Varmus has been named a recipient of a 2001 National Medal of Science. The honor recognizes Dr. Varmus's service as Director of the National Institutes of Health from 1993 to 1999 and his significant scientific accomplishments.
Harold Varmus Receives National Medal of Science from President Bush A leading contributor to cancer research for more than thirty years, he received the 1989 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology with J. Michael Bishop, now Chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco, for their discovery that normal human and animal cells contain genes capable of becoming cancer genes. This revolutionary discovery led to an aggressive and successful search for the genetic origins of cancer by the scientific community. President George W. Bush will award National Medals of Science to Dr. Varmus and 14 others at a White House ceremony on June 13.

Director

One Center Drive, MSC 0148
Bethesda, Maryland 20892-0148 Dear Dr. Varmus: I have received a copy of a January 23, 1995 memorandum to you from Mr. Walter Stewart and Dr. Ned Feder, as well as their letter to Dr. Kenneth J. Ryan. They have enclosed a "draft report" that they claim was authored by staff of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. We cannot vouch for the authenticity or accuracy of the papers provided to you. They were not reviewed, much less evaluated, by the staff director, the Chairman, or any other Member of the Subcommittee. While some staff time was spent developing a report, one early draft of the matter had been rejected by the Subcommittee staff director several months ago. Because of the election results and the resultant time and resource constraints imposed by the transition, and the enormity of the editing and fact-checking tasks needed to assure that a report on this topic met the standards of the Subcommittee, no report was issued. Drafts and relevant files on this inquiry were turned over to the incoming majority as a pending and uncompleted matter. I hope that this information will be of use to you as you and others assess the "draft report" and respond to the requests made by Mr. Stewart and Dr. Feder.

Home Page Nobel Laureate and Former NIH Head Harold Varmus Elected to University Trustees By James Devitt Harold E. Varmus Harold E. Varmus, a Nobel laureate and former director of the National Institutes of Health, has been elected a Trustee of Columbia University. Varmus shared the 1989 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with J. Michael Bishop for their work at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) on the genetic basis of cancer. Varmus, who spent 23 years as a faculty member at UCSF, Bishop and their co-workers demonstrated the cellular origins of the oncogene of a chicken retrovirus. This discovery led to the isolation of many cellular genes that normally control growth and development and are frequently mutated in human cancer. Varmus is also widely recognized for his studies of the replication cycles of retroviruses and hepatitis B viruses, the functions of genes implicated in cancer and the development of mouse models for human cancer. In 1993, Varmus was named by President Bill Clinton to serve as the director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a position he held until the end of 1999. At the NIH, Varmus initiated many changes in the conduct of intramural and extramural research programs, recruited new leaders for most of the important positions at the NIH, planned three major buildings on the NIH campus and helped to increase the NIH budget from under $11 to nearly $18 billion.

Harold Varmus, Lewis Branscomb are Honored with the Vannevar Bush Award
The National Science Board (NSB) has named two renowned scientists to receive the Vannevar Bush Award for lifetime achievement in science and public service. Harold E. Varmus, former director of the National Institutes of Health and a Nobel-prize holder for contributions to understanding the mechanisms of cancer, and Lewis M. Branscomb, a physicist, former NSB chair and one of the most compelling voices in science and technology policy will receive the award May 23 at a Department of State-hosted awards dinner. Varmus is currently president of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, the nation's oldest and largest private institution for cancer research. No stranger to heading large organizations, Varmus joined Sloan-Kettering after directing for seven years the government's largest health-related research organization, the National Institutes of Health, through a major growth period during the 1990s.
