The Cardiovascular Cure: How to Strengthen Your Self Defense Against Heart Attack and Stroke Home Page About The Book Foreword What's New? ... The CVProfilor Foreword by Sir John Vane, D.SC., F.R.S.
Nobel Laureate, 1982 I have been immersed in biological research for more than half a century, and in 1982, received the Nobel Prize for my discovery of a prostaglandin that we called prostacyclin. It relaxes blood vessels, a property that has led to new treatments for heart and vessel disease. I was also cited for discovering the way that aspirin and similar drugs work, again through interactions with the prostaglandin system. I have had the great pleasure of exchanging ideas with bright and innovative investigators the world over. When I first met John Cooke some years ago in his laboratory at Stanford University, he struck me as an enthusiastic young clinical scientist with great promise. His subsequent research work and the publication of this book show how right I was! Over the last 50 years biologists have discovered many different mediators or chemical messengers, which transmit signals from one cell to another. They include amines such as histamine, acetylcholine, and catecholamines; peptides such as bradykinin and angiotensin; and lipids such as prostacyclin. They all play important roles in keeping the body working, and because of this, Nobel Prizes have been awarded to several of the discoverers. Less than 15 years ago, a different and very potent mediator of blood vessel relaxation and inhibition of platelet clumping was identified as nitric oxide (NO). It is the simplest messenger of them all, and as a gas, will diffuse freely through cell membranes.

Francis Hacker, Soldier, Regicide, d.1660
Presbyterian Army officer from Nottinghamshire. His family were Royalists - one of his brothers died fighting for the King, another lost a hand. Colonel Hacker commanded the soldiers who guarded King Charles during his trial and controlled access to him. He signed the order to the executioner when Colonel Huncks refused to do so and supervised the guard on the scaffold when the King was beheaded. Brought to trial at the Restoration, Hacker pleaded that he was only following orders, but was sentenced to death. He was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn in October 1660. Top of Page

Occupation: Lawyer, Government Official
Also John Locke, the father was a lawyer and a clerk to the local Justices of the Peace. It is my impression that the position of clerk was not a governmental one but rather private employment by the JP's. However, toward the end of his life the father was county clerk for sewers.
It seems clear that he was affluent. He had inherited a good fortune from his own father, although he left his own son less than he had received.
