Much has been said about how the 300bar, higher pressure diving cylinders actually have less gas in them than the gauge suggests, and there's a need to understand why this is. Any cylinder with a pressure of 232 bar or more is effectively holding less gas per bar of pressure than a lower pressurised cylinder. Why? The gases we use in diving cylinders work as 'ideal gases' under lower working pressures, but start to react differently under pressures over a certain point. (we'll ignore temperature for this explanation). A layman's explanation. T he best way is to explain each term as if the reader knows nothing, and build upon that. Solid: Of stable shape, usually rigid at normal temperatures. Liquid: Having a consistency like that of water or oil, incompressible, but not resistant to change of shape, neither solid or gaseous. Gas: Any air-like or completely elastic fluid, especially not liquid or solid at ordinary temperatures. A gas will expand to fill the container it is enclosed in. Fluid: Consisting of particles that move freely among themselves and yield to slightest pressure. Not solid or rigid or stable. Gases and liquids can both be described as 'fluid', or being in a fluid state.

Johannes Diderik van der Waals Research Paper
Johannes Diderik van der Waals was born in Leyden in 1873 and died in 1923. He is the Dutch physicist that was interested greatly in thermodynamics. He is responsible for coming up with the equation that is called the van der waals equation. It is an equation that deals with the corresponding states on the continuity of the liquid and gaseous state of matter. In 1901 he received the Nobel Prize of physic for the discoveries he had made in this area. He then went on to discover what today is named the van der Waals forces, which deal with the attractive forces holding the atoms of molecules together. His donation to the world of physics has been great and his name is one that is well known for good reason. After van der waals had completed his elementary education in the Netherlands he became a school teacher. He studied at Leyden University although he was not allowed to be tested because he did not have knowledge of the classical languages. He had several other teaching jobs and soon there was a new legislation that allowed students without prior classical education to take university examinations, and he received his doctor’s degree in 1873 (biography).

It is the purpose of this Web page to give exposure to highly significant work on phase separation and critical behavior of fluids and fluid mixtures performed in the Netherlands around 1900. The papers reproduced in full on this page have been chosen for their importance, with readability and availability in English as additional selection criteria. Eventually, each paper will be preceded by a brief paragraph, giving the context and highlighting the principal results.
Phase separation of fluids is a topic of major practical interest in the chemical and materials processing industry, geochemistry, and metallurgy. The thermodynamical foundation of the field was laid in the 1870s by the U.S. chemist Josiah Willard Gibbs (1875-1878). In the late 19th century, Dutch physicists and chemists, and even a mathematician, were leaders in the development of this field. Many of the early discoveries have been conserved and have become the mainstay of the oil-and gas industry. Part of the work was forgotten, and discovered anew during the 20th century.
Fluids and fluid mixtures can exist in several different phases: liquid, vapor, and a variety of solid phases. The characteristic feature of the vapor-liquid transition of pure fluids is that it occurs only below a certain temperature, called critical, which differs from fluid to fluid. In 1873 the Amsterdam physicist Johannes Diderik van der Waals (1837-1923) developed the first formulation that yielded both a vapor-liquid phase transition and a critical point.

Discoveries by the School of Van der Waals and Kamerlingh Onnes
This book narrates the story of pioneering scientists in the Netherlands, who reached a profound and omprehensive understanding of fluid mixture criticality and phase separation within a brief time span around the end of the 19th century. This achievement was the consequence of the felicitous collaboration of two Dutch physicists and Nobel prize winners, Johannes Diderik van der Waals (1837-1923) at the University of Amsterdam, and Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (1853-1926) at the University of Leiden.
Processes of mixing and separation of fluids, underlying almost all production methods in the chemical industry, can be surprisingly complex. Throughout most of the 19th century, the mechanism of phase separation of pressurized fluid mixture remained a mystery. In 1890, Van der Waals, by generalizing his famous equation of state to fluid mixtures, brought Gibbs’s abstract thermodynamics to practical application. The Amsterdam mathematician Korteweg provided the mathematical underpinnings.
Van der Waals’ mixture equation inspired a major experimental effort by Kamerlingh Onnes and his collaborators Kuenen, Keesom, and Verschaffelt. They discovered various types of binary fluid phase separation; the Amsterdam chemist Van Laar classified these by means of the Van der Waals equation. Between 1890 and 1906, the Dutch School reached an understanding of phase behavior and criticality of fluid mixtures that was far ahead of its time. Much of their work would be rediscovered or resumed only in the second half of the 20th century, when research on liquids and critical phenomena flourished anew.

Johannes Diderik van der Waals (1837-1923) was a Dutch physicist. In important ways his life was similar to that of J. H. van't Hoff, who was 15 years his junior. Van der Waals, the son of a carpenter, got a slower start than van't Hoff, the son of a doctor. He began as a primary school teacher and, lacking a classical education, could only graduate with an advanced degree after the law was changed to drop the requirements in Latin and Greek for science students. Remember that it was when van't Hoff , while writing his doctoral thesis in Utrecht, published the little pamphlet Voorstel tot Uitbreiding der Tegenwoordige in de Scheikunde gebruikte Structuurformules in de Ruimte (Proposal for the Extension of Current Chemical Stuctures into Space) . Once expanded and translated into French and German , this pamphlet revolutionized organic chemistry. In the previous year van der Waals's doctoral thesis in Leiden On the continuity of the gaseous and liquid states proposed an empirical correction to the Equation of State for Ideal Gases (PV = nRT), to make it work for real gases at high pressure and low temperature, where attraction between molecules and their finite size (repulsive forces) come into play. Despite the Dutch language, the thesis was an instant success, prompting James Clerk Maxwell to write

Van der Waals force
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
In chemistry , the term van der Waals force originally referred to all forms of intermolecular forces ; however, in modern usage it tends to refer only to London forces : those forces which arise from induced rather than permanent dipoles . The forces are named after Johannes Diderik van der Waals The van der Waals force is the force to which the gecko 's unique ability to cling to smooth surfaces is attributed. A gecko can hang on a glass surface using only one toe. In 2003 a kind of synthetic adhesive tape http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99993785 was created using this principle. Johannes Diederik van der Waals
Dutch physicist, winner of the 1910 Nobel Prize for Physics for his research on the gaseous and liquid states of matter. His work made the study of temperatures near absolute zero possible.
It was this work that brought him the Nobel Prize and also led Sir James Dewar of England and Heike Kamerlingh Onnes of The Netherlands to the determination of the necessary data for the liquefaction of hydrogen and helium. Van der Waals was appointed professor of physics at the University of Amsterdam in 1877, a post he retained until 1907. The van der Waals forces, weak attractive forces between atoms or molecules, were named in his honour.
