The United States is providing historic amounts of humanitarian aid to the Afghan people to help them prepare for the opening of school, and to recover from years of civil war, decades of drought and the effects of terrorist rule. The Taliban have left the Afghan people without even the most basic infrastructure and health, education, and medical services. President Bush has a comprehensive and compassionate program to bring a brighter future of freedom, hope and opportunity to Afghan families. While humanitarian relief efforts continue to meet immediate needs, reconstruction activities have begun as well. The government has pledged nearly $300 million in this fiscal year alone to help Afghans with relief and reconstruction in the following areas: Education: In helping the Afghan people rebuild their country, President Bush has placed a central focus on education. When school opened in March 2002, Afghan children began the year with new textbooks, supplies and uniforms.

What does the UN do for children?
Updated 10 May 2002, 17.21
Closing ceremony of the UN Children's Forum
The United Nations
Overview
400 young delegates from around the world have attended a UN Children's Summit in New York. They voted on young people's priorities, and presented their results to a special session of the UN. Students draw up a convention on pupil rights. Learning aims
  • What the United Nations Children's Summit was about
  • The UN's involvement in children's rights
  • Why it is hard to draft and enforce conventions
Icebreaker
Read the news story: Teenagers address world leaders What is the United Nations? Explain the following four key points about the UN. [1] That the United Nations is made up of 189 countries from around the world. It is often called the UN. [2] It was set up in 1945, after the Second World War, as a way of bringing people together and to avoid further wars. [3] The UN has a section called Unicef that tries to help children. [4] The UN has a convention on children's rights. They would like it to be followed by all countries, as a set of rules about the treatment of children.
    Ask the class:
  • Why is it important to have an organisation that is bigger than any one country?

UN Chronicle
Sept-Nov, 2003
The United Nations was honoured in 1965for the fourth timewhen the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for playing a vital role in fostering "the brotherhood among nations and the furtherance of peace". This award was a recognition of the vital role UNICEF has carved for itself in the pursuit of basic human needs and rights of all children. An entity dealing initially with a "minor, peripheral problem"it was created on a temporary basis to deal with the emergency needs and post-war crises facing Europe's many helpless childrenUNICEF has evolved into the world's "never slumbering conscience". Recognizing that the children of today are the arbiters of tomorrow's peace, the award underscores the importance of cooperation among Governments, the United Nations and international and non-governmental organizations in striving to improve the condition of children

In seeking to promote this concept, as well as to engender justice, peace and prosperity at the international level, the worldwide Bah¡' community has, as a duly accredited non-governmental organization, long worked closely with the United Nations, supporting many of its goals and programs.
