Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Desmond Mpilo Tutu
7 October 1931 - ?
Archbishop Tutu is best known for his belief in the possibility of ultimate interracial harmony - a conviction that becomes a feat when considering his personal history.
In 1962, apartheid reached the church. White academics could no longer teach black clergymen, and black academics were needed to fill the gap. Tutu’s teaching experience, his two degrees, and his conscientiousness made him an ideal candidate for this duty, though he lacked a master’s degree. In order to fill this gap, he left South Africa in 1962 to pursue a master’s degree at King’s College at London University.
...Tutu reached religious prominence and was consecrated as the bishop of Lesotho...
He returned to his homeland in 1967 and continued with his mission of teaching black clergy. In 1976, Tutu reached religious prominence and was consecrated as the bishop of Lesotho, an independent enclave within South Africa.
The positive events in Tutu’s life were not matched by events at home. A month before his consecration, Soweto, a black community near South Africa’s capital, Johannesburg, exploded in violence as 15,000 schoolchildren took to the streets. They were angry that Afrikaans, instead of English - their typical language of instruction — would be used to teach some of their classes. More than 600 people were killed. Tutu did not return to South Africa until 1977, when he was asked to speak at the funeral of black activist Steven Biko, who died in police custody. Biko’s death was a turning point for Tutu, and he came to the conclusion that the church had to play a political role if apartheid was to be conquered without bloodshed.

In recent years cancer of the prostate has caused Tutu to retire from a public role, although his presence will continue to be felt for many years to come.

Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu, head of the Anglican Church in South Africa, was the leading spokesman of non-violent resistance to apartheid during 1980s, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1984.
Tutu was born in the Transvaal and spent his teen years in Johannesburg, where his mother had taken work at a mission school for the blind. His religious faith was deeply strengthened by the staff's compassion and dedication, and shortly thereafter he met Father Trevor HUDDLESTON, whom he has termed the greatest single influence on his life. Huddleston, then just beginning his career as the leading white foe of apartheid, spent time with Tutu, including daily visits for almost two years when Tutu was in the hospital with tuberculosis. Unable to afford medical school fees after high school, Tutu received a teacher's certificate from the Bantu Normal College in 1953 and a correspondence degree from the University of South Africa the following year. He taught for several years until the government's Bantu education program, guaranteeing second-class status for black South Africans, took effect. With many other teachers, Tutu resigned in 1957.
Throughout his rise in church circles, Tutu was increasingly involved in confronting the patterns of violence in the townships and their root cause: the country's apartheid regime. Firmly committed to a policy of Christian non-violence, Tutu nevertheless was unable to be a passive bystander, and he used his SACC position as a world pulpit. He argued that "to be impartial is to have taken sides already." He strongly endorsed economic sanctions against South Africa on a 1979 trip to Denmark, which led to his passport being lifted for two years. When he was again able to travel, Tutu made an international tour to promote sanctions, which he saw as the best non-violent means of breaking apartheid's power. On his return, his passport was again taken, and thereafter he went abroad with a travel document stamped "nationality undetermined."

Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu
Country: South Africa. Cause: Ending of apartheid in South African. Background: By 1600 all of what is now South Africa has been settled by indigenous Africans. European intrusion into the region begins in 1652 when the Dutch establish a settlement at the Cape of Good Hope on the southwestern tip of Africa. The British seizure of the settlement in 1795 leads to conflict with the established European farmers (the Boer). The conflict eventually boils over into the Boer War of 1899-1902. The British win but ultimately opt to give South Africa independence. The Union of South Africa is formed on 31 May 1910. Black South Africans have limited voting rights and are subjected to building discrimination. In 1948 the National Party wins the all-white general election on a campaign promise to introduce a system of "apartheid" to totally separate the races. Opposition to the apartheid system by the black majority is ruthlessly suppressed. The National Party will remain in power until 1994. More background Mini biography: Born on 7 October 1931 in Klerksdorp, about 150 km southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. His father is a teacher and his mother a domestic worker. The young Tutu is raised in an atmosphere of tolerance and sympathy where, he later says, "I never learnt to hate". When Tutu is 12 his family moves to Johannesburg.

Tutu, Desmond Mpilo
Desmond Tutu has formulated his objective as "a democratic and just society without racial divisions", and has set forward the following points as minimum demands: 1. equal civil rights for all 2. the abolition of South Africa's passport laws 3. a common system of education 4. the cessation of forced deportation from South Africa to the so-called "homelands" The South African Council of Churches is a contact organization for the churches of South Africa and functions as a national committee for the World Council of Churches. The Boer churches have disassociated themselves from the organization as a result of the unambiguous stand it has made against apartheid. Around 80 percent of its members are black, and they now dominate the leading positions. From Nobel Lectures, Peace 1981-1990.
