Laureat Nagrody Nobla z fizyki za rok 1998
Ma 58 lat. Urodzi³ siê w Henanie w Chinach. W 1967 r. uzyska³ doktorat z fizyki na University of Chicago. Od 1982 r. pracuje na Princeton University.
Wcze¶niej przez 13 lat pracowa³ - tak jak Horst L. Stoermer - w Laboratoriach Bella. Zajmowa³ siê tam elektronik± cia³a sta³ego. T± sam± dziedzin± zajmuje siê te¿ na Princeton. Oprócz tego interesuj± go elektryczne w³a¶ciwo¶ci cienkich warstw i mikrostruktura pó³przewodników.

People
Daniel C. Tsui physicist Born: Birthplace: Henan Province, China Daniel Tsui was born in a remote Chinese village to illiterate parents who were determined that their children would be educated. His sent him to Hong Kong, away from war-torn China. Many Chinese scholars had fled there and young Tsui benefited from the glut of overqualified teachers. He received a scholarship to Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., his pastor's alma mater. For graduate work he went to the University of Chicago. He went on to do research in solid state physics at Bell Laboratories and then to teach at Princeton. He and two others shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering that electrons acting together in strong magnetic fields can form new types of particles.

for Achievement in Science
Sir Martin Rees, Ph.D.

Astronomer Royal
Royal Society Professor, Institute of Astronomy
Cambridge University, England For his contributions to elucidating the nature of quasars, black holes, X- and gamma-ray sources, and many other phenomena in high-energy astrophysics and cosmology. His original ideas span 30 years, from the prediction of superluminal motion in radio sources to exploding fireballs in gamma-ray bursts, always in fruitful contact with observations. He has broadened understanding of the universe by training dozens of creative younger astrophysicists, inspiring public appreciation of science, and formulating science policy. Sir Martin Rees is one of the world's leading theorists in the field of astrophysics and cosmology. He was the first to propose the fantastic and now widely accepted theory that the engines driving the high-energy, deep-space quasars seen through the Hubble Space Telescope are actually enormous black holes. England's Astronomer Royal, Rees was Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge University, and was elected to this chair at the age of 30. He was also president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science and has directed wide-ranging research programs at Cambridge's Institute of Astronomy for the last 20 years. In addition to authoring some 350 research papers and three technical books, Rees has written many general articles on cosmology and its philosophical implications. His latest book, "Before the Beginning," argues that our universe is but one atom in a much larger multiverse.

NOBEL PRIZE FOR PHYSICS Dr. Daniel C. Tsui, a professor at Princeton University and a 1961 graduate of Augustana College, is one of three scientists working at U.S. universities who will share the Nobel Prize for Physics, according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Tsui (pronounced "TSOO-ee"), who was born in Henan, China (near Hong Kong) in 1939 and came to Augustana in 1958, graduated with a degree in mathematics and membership in Augustana's Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Augustana's president, Dr. Thomas Tredway says the college is very proud of Dr Tsui's achievements and the recognition he has received for them. "His intellect and discipline represent the very best of what we hope for in the students who pursue study in the sciences at Augustana," Tredway says. Tsui will share the Nobel Prize, and the $978,000 cash award that goes with it, with Robert Laughlin of Stanford University and Horst Stoermer of Columbia University. The Swedish Academy is recognizing their discoveries of how sub-atomic particles can behave like a fluid. Their work shows that electrons acting together in strong magnetic fields can form new types of particles. The academy's citation notes that their work "led to yet another breakthrough in our understanding of quantum physics and to the development of new theoretical concepts of significance in many branches of modern physics." In April, the trio won the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics for their work.

Daniel Tsui of Princeton, Horst Stormer of Columbia University, and
Robert Laughlin of Stanford won the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physics "for
their discovery of a new form of quantum fluid with fractionally
charged excitations," according to the Royal Swedish Academy, which
announced the prize Tuesday morning in Stockholm. Daniel Chee Tsui, 59, was born in Henan, China, in 1939. He went to
"Pui-Cheng" High School in Hong Kong. He came to the United States in
1958 to attend Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., and graduated
Phi Beta Kappa. He received his doctorate in physics from the
University of Chicago and was appointed a professor at Princeton in
OCPA and its members would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to Professor Tsui for winning the Nobel Prize in physics, which is the highest honor a physicist can achieved. We also wish him many more great successes and continuing contributions to physics in the future.
