http://boes.org/coop/lmines/nobel98.html
The Nobel Peace Prize for 1998
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 1998 to John Hume and David Trimble for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland.
Over the past thirty years, the national, religious and social conflict in Northern Ireland has cost over 3,500 people their lives. John Hume has throughout been the clearest and most consistent of Northern Ireland's political leaders in his work for a peaceful solution. The foundations of the peace agreement signed on Good Friday 1998 reflect principles which he has stood for.
As the leader of the traditionally predominant party in Northern Ireland, David Trimble showed great political courage when, at a critical stage of the process, he advocated solutions which led to the peace agreement. As the head of the Northern Ireland government, he has taken the first steps towards building up the mutual confidence on which a lasting peace must be based.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee also wishes to emphasise the importance of the positive contributions to the peace process made by other Northern Irish leaders, and by the governments of Great Britain, Ireland, and the United States.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee expresses the hope that the foundations which have now been laid will not only lead to lasting peace in Northern Ireland, but also serve to inspire peaceful solutions to other religious, ethnic and national conflicts around the world.

The Nobel Prize for peace normally goes to named persons. This year the persons named are John Hume and myself, two politicians from Northern Ireland. And I am honoured, as John Hume is honoured, that my name should be so singled out. But in one sense the singling of one or two persons, for a peace prize, must always seem something of an injustice. In Northern Ireland I could name scores of people, unionist and nationalist, who deserve this prize as well. Add to that the thousands of people who I do not know but who have borne witness in their own lives, by carrying out what Wordsworth called "those little nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love". And since I know there are thousands of such heroes and heroines in Northern Ireland, how many more millions of peacemakers must there be in the front line of the fight for peace across the globe. People who stand in the front line for peace in all the places where there is no peace - Bosnia, Kosovo, Gaza, Cyprus, Rwanda, Angola.

Joan Trimble may only be remembered as one half of the superb piano duo with her sister, Valerie who died in 1980. It is often forgotten that Valerie was a fine cellist. Joan was born on 18th June 1915 in Orchard Terrace, Enniskillen in Northern Ireland. her father,William Egbert, was a journalist and her mother, Marie (nee Dowse) was a musician being aprofessional violinist. Joan's paternal grandfather was the historian and poet William CopelandTrimble and a cousin of Joan's grandmother was the Irish composer William Vincent Wallace (1812 1865) who lived a very exciting life and composed a highly successful opera Maritana. There was always music at home. Joan learned the violin and played Bach's famous Double Violin Concerto with her mother. It was her Mother who taught her to play both the violin and the piano. Joan's awakening to music came in the 1920s when she heard the superlative Piano Concerto no. 2

Focus On David Trimble First Minister - Northern Ireland Assembly
  • 54 year old David Trimble is said to have one thing in his favour - "Brains", according to some-one not deemed by him to be a friend.
  • Married for the second time to one of his under-graduates Daphne Orr, the former law lecturer in Queen's University in Belfast had always flirted with politics.
  • Eventually he joined the Ulster Unionist party in 1978. His political break in that party came with the death of Upper Bann MP Harold McCusker in 1990. Mr. Trimble was returned to Westminster where he appears to revel in the parliamentary atmosphere.
  • At one stage in the seventies he favoured a voluntary coalition with the SDLP and later, according to Unionist sources, he thought independence for Northern Ireland would be to its advantage.
  • Trimble, a consummate Orangeman, is said to be at his most relaxed in that milieu. His 'not an inch' stance with Portadown Orangemen in the mid nineties has been said to be the reason for his election as Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party when Jim Molyneaux stepped down as Party Chief.
  • What distinguished him from former Unionist Party leaders is his pragmatism. It was this quality which eventually resulted in his signing the Good Friday Agreement on April 10 1998.

Press Statement
Richard Boucher, Spokesman
Washington, DC
July 2, 2001
Resignation of David Trimble And the Future of the Peace Process In Northern Ireland
The United States regrets David Trimble's resignation as First Minister of the devolved Northern Ireland Assembly. We recognize the initiatives and risks that he, both as Unionist Party leader and as First Minister, has taken for peace in Northern Ireland. His determined and patient leadership of his own party was instrumental in negotiating the Good Friday Agreement itself, and he has persisted in seeking ways to implement that agreement in full. We welcome his intention to remain actively engaged in the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. We believe all parties to the Agreement continue to want it to take hold and the peace process to succeed. We are pleased that negotiations toward these goals continue. We urge all parties to work together to avoid sectarian violence and to remain focused on consolidating the gains made thus far. We hope Northern Ireland's leaders will redouble efforts to overcome the current impasse, dealing with all outstanding issues. In the context of full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, the issue of paramilitary arms must be addressed. Guns have no part to play in democratic politics. The Agreement clearly calls for decommissioning. The 1998 referendum and the recent election clearly show that all communities in Northern Ireland want and deserve peaceful solutions to political, social and economic issues, and that the people want self-government. The United States remains ready to support Northern Ireland's political leaders as they, along with the British and Irish Governments, seek to carry out the will and fulfill the dreams of Northern Ireland's people.

Who would be David Trimble?
WHO WOULD be David Trimble today? He engineered his resignation as First Minister in order to bounce his republican colleagues into decommissioning arms and to see off the threat from the Democratic Unionists in the recent general election. He has succeeded in neither of these aims. The Provos remain well-armed and the DUP have gained seats in North Belfast and East Londonderry at the expense of the Ulster Unionists. Mr Trimble’s consolation prizes of North Down and South Antrim were gained with the help of the Alliance Party. The presence of David Burnside – the new South Antrim MP, who sees himself as the heir-apparent to the UUP leadership - seems to be a mixed blessing!
We have always argued that the ‘Good Friday Agreement’ is seriously flawed. It won acceptance by a slim majority of unionist voters because of false promises given by Tony Blair and a massive well-financed propaganda campaign that smeared anyone questioning the deal as warmongers and vicious bigots. David Trimble seems to have deceived himself that the Provos and armed loyalist groups were obliged to decommission under the terms of the Agreement. All the signatories pledged themselves to was

March 1997 (The Independence)
"WHY UNIONISTS MUST SUPPORT INDEPENDENCE" -David Trimble "We have been turned into an internal colony. " IN 1988 David Trimble, the present leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, published a document emitted What Choice For Ulster? in support of independence. This month we are printing extracts from that document in the hope of reminding David Trimble and his unionist friends of "the grim reality before us." Although Trimble seems to be embroiled in unionist rhetoric these days, the arguments presented by him against devolution and integration in favour of independence are as valid today as they were nine years ago.
In the opening pages Trimble noted that: "The diktat remains and remains open to the development republicans desire. Meanwhile that continued existence, is a constant reminder drat the government at Westminster has disregarded the views of the people of Ulster on a matter of vital concern to them and, having apparently got away with it. will do so again.."

Unionist opponents regard him as the man who sold out to their longstanding republican enemies, while nationalist critics have little faith in his willingness to fully recognise their rights. David Trimble was the surprise winner in the race for the leadership of the Ulster Unionist Party in 1995, despite little support from his fellow MPs. In part the success was explained by his high-profile role during a stand-off in Drumcree between members of the Protestant Orange Order and local Catholic residents in 1995. When Orange Order marchers were able to follow their preferred route, despite the objections of people in the area, Mr Trimble was at the head of the parade, alongside the democratic unionist leader, the Rev Ian Paisley.
