A recent example of our work includes demonstration that variations in visual brightness of the famous star Betelgeuse are primarily due to localized increases in temperature rather than a charge in its size, discovery of a recent episode in which the star suddenly emitted a large amount of gas, and measurement of Betelgeuse's diameter. The latter represents the first measurement of a stellar size at mid-IR wavelengths, giving a much more reliable (and somewhat larger) size because of the non-uniform brightness in the visible region, including darkening at the edges of the star due to its atmosphere. We also see motion of material around a number of stars. Spatial interferometry on spectral lines has been initiated. This will allow study of the formation and conditions of molecular material in stellar atmospheres and surroundings. Selected Publications

http://www.nobel.se/physics/laureates/1964/townes-bio.html
Charles Hard Townes was born in Greenville, South Carolina, on July 28, 1915, the son of Henry Keith Townes, an attorney, and Ellen (Hard) Townes. He attended the Greenville public schools and then Furman University in Greenville, where he completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree in physics and the Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern Languages, graduating summa cum laude in 1935, at the age of 19. Physics had fascinated him since his first course in the subject during his sophomore year in college because of its "beautifully logical structure". He was also interested in natural history while at Furman, serving as curator of the museum, and working during the summers as collector for Furman's biology camp. In addition,he was busy with other activities, including the swimming team, the college newspaper and the football band.
Townes completed work for the Master of Arts degree in Physics at Duke University in 1936, and then entered graduate school at the California Institute of Technology , where he received the Ph.D. degree in 1939 with a thesis on isotope separation and nuclear spins.

Charles Hard Townes
Charles Hard Townes
American physicist, joint winner with the Soviet physicists Aleksandr M. Prokhorov and Nikolay G. Basov of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1964 for his role in the invention of the maser and the laser.
Charles H. Townes played the major role in the development of the laser, one of science's greatest accomplishments. Townes finished Greenville High School at 15. He graduated summa cum laude from Furman University, in 1935, with degrees in physics and modern languages. He took an active interest in the university's museum. Townes did graduate work at Duke University. In 1939, he earned his doctorate in physics from California Institute of Technology. The many pictures and displays in the Charles Townes Center - Commemorative Gallery detail the rich and productive life of one of South Carolina's leading scientist. Charles Townes married Francis H. Brown in 1941 while he as a research physicist at Bell Laboratories. In the early 1950s, he was a professor of physics at Columbia University and was doing the spectroscopy research that would lead to the invention of the maser. In 1959, while still at Columbia University, he was awarded the patent for the maser and in 1960, with Arthur Schawlow, the first laser patent. A leading research scientist, Townes, was also a dynamic teacher. Many of his students have earned acclaim in physics research.

    Charles Hard Townes
was born in Greenville, South Carolina, on 28 July 1915. He attended the Greenville public schools and then Furman University from which he received the Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and the Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern Languages. He was graduated summa cum laude in 1935. A year later he completed work for the Master of Arts degree in Physics at Duke University. He then entered graduate school at the California Institute of Technology, where he received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1939. Townes was a member of the technical staff of the Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1939 to 1947. He worked extensively during World War II on the design of radar bombing systems. From this he turned to the field of the microwave spectroscope which he foresaw both as a powerful new tool for the study of the structure of atoms and molecules and as a potential new basis for controlling electromagnetic waves. He was appointed to the faculty of Columbia University in 1948. He continued research in microwave physics and in 1951 be conceived the idea of the maser. In early 1954, the first amplification and generation of electromagnetic waves by stimulated emission were obtained. Townes and his students coined the word "maser" for this device, which is an acronym for microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.
