Administrative/Biographical History
Tinbergen was one of the founding fathers of modern ethology. At Leiden he developed laboratory work, in which the three-spined stickleback proved a particularly successful experimental animal, and field studies initiating projects on wasps, butterflies and the hobby (bird of prey). His work on the breeding behaviour of herring gulls also dates from this period and, like the stickleback research, became one of the classics of ethology. He spent the spring of 1937 working with K.Z. Lorenz at Altenberg near Vienna, an association that was to have the greatest importance for their science. After the move to Oxford, Tinbergen built up a research group that had a profound influence on the development of ethology round the world. In particular, his research focused on the adaptedness of behaviour; the work on the herring gull initiated in the Netherlands developed into comparative studies of many gull species. His most influential book, The Study of Instinct , appeared in 1951 and he also wrote books for the educated layman and made scientific films such as the Italia Prize winner 'Signals for Survival' (1969). Tinbergen became increasingly preoccupied with the implications of the ethological approach for man, and in retirement he and his wife collaborated on a study of childhood autism publishing

Tinbergen was the brother of the zoologist Nikolaas Tinbergen and was educated at the University of Leiden. From 1929 to 1945 he was a business-cycle statistician with the Dutch government's Central Bureau of Statistics and from 1945 to 1955 was director of the Central Planning Bureau. He held the post of professor of economics at The Netherlands School of Economics (now part of Erasmus University), Rotterdam, for 40 years (1933-73) and then taught for two years at the University of Leiden before his retirement in 1975. Tinbergen was an economic adviser to the League of Nations at Geneva, 1936-38, and it was there that he completed his analysis of the economic development of the United States from 1919 to 1932. This pioneering econometric study provided much of the raw material for his later development of business-cycle theory and for the application of methods of economic stabilization. Later he also constructed an econometric model of The Netherlands, which was applied to both short-term and broader political-economic planning. Among his major works are Statistical Testing of Business Cycles (1938), Econometrics (1942), Economic Policy (1956), and Income Distribution (1975).

Born in The Hague Netherlands , he is also noted as the brother of Jan Tinbergen , who won the first Nobel Prize in Economics. He had a third eminant brother Luuk Tinbergen. He is well known for originating the four questions he believed should be asked of any animal behaviour, which were:
  • Function: how does the behaviour impact on the animal’s chances of survival and reproduction? Causation: what are the stimuli that elicit the response, and how has it been modified by recent learning? Development: how does the behaviour change with age, and what early experiences are necessary for the behaviour to be shown? Evolutionary history: how does the behaviour compare with similar behaviour in related species, and how might it have arisen through the process of phylogeny?
  • They are still considered as the cornerstone of modern ethology.

Studies of the display behavior of certain species revealed that such displays result from a state of conflict between opposite motivations ("fight or flee"). Further work clarified the evolutionary origins of many social signals and their subsequent ritualization. Tinbergen emphasized the mutual interaction between predator and prey and, as scientific adviser to the Serengeti Research Institute in Tanzania, applied this approach to African plains game. His best-known books are The Study of Instinct The Herring Gull's World (1953, rev. ed. 1961). He was named a fellow of the Royal Society in 1962 and a foreign fellow of the Netherlands Academy of Sciences in 1964.

    Alexander technique
    Definition
The Alexander technique is a somatic method for improving physical and mental functioning. Excessive tension, which Frederick Alexander, the originator, recognized as both physical and mental, restricts movement and creates pressure in the joints, the spine, the breathing mechanism, and other organs. The goal of the technique is to restore freedom and expression to the body and clear thinking to the mind.
    Purpose
Because the Alexander technique helps students improve overall functioning, both mental and physical, it offers a wide range of benefits. Nikolaas Tinbergen, in his 1973 Nobel lecture, hailed the "striking improvements in such diverse things as high blood pressure, breathing, depth of sleep, overall cheerfulness and mental alertness, resilience against outside pressures, and the refined skill of playing a musical instrument." He went on to quote a list of other conditions helped by the Alexander technique: "rheumatism, including various forms of arthritis, then respiratory troubles, and even potentially lethal asthma ; following in their wake, circulation defects, which may lead to high blood pressure and also to some dangerous heart conditions; gastrointestinal disorders of many types, various gynecological conditions, sexual failures, migraines and depressive states."
