Sir George Paget Thomson
Sir George Paget Thomson
English physicist whose work on interference phenomena in the scattering of electrons by crystals helped to confirm the wavelike nature of particles. He shared a Nobel prize 1937.
In the USA, C J Davisson made the same discovery independently, earlier the same year, using a different method.
He was born and educated at Cambridge, the son of physicist J J Thomson. His first professorship was 1922-30 at Aberdeen, moving to Imperial College, London, 1930-52. During World War II, Thomson headed many government committees, including one concerned with atomic weapons.
During the mid-1920s, Thomson carried out a series of experiments hoping to verify French physicist Louis de Broglie's hypothesis that electrons possess duality, acting both as particles and as waves. The experiment involved bombarding very thin metal (aluminium, gold, and platinum) and celluloid foils with a narrow beam of electrons. The beam was scattered into a series of rings. Applying mathematical formulas to measurements of the rings, together with a knowledge of the crystal lattice, Thomson showed in 1927 that all the readings were in complete agreement with de Broglie's theory. Mimo jiné Thomson publikoval práce z oblasti geometrie elektronogramù a lomu elektronù.

Davisson of the United States, of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1937 for demonstrating that electrons undergo diffraction, a behaviour peculiar to waves that is widely exploited in determining the atomic structure of solids and liquids. The only son of the noted physicist Sir J.J. Thomson , he worked in the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University after World War I. In 1922 he was appointed professor of natural philosophy at the University of Aberdeen, Scot., where he conducted experiments demonstrating that a beam of electrons is diffracted upon passage through a crystalline substance, thus confirming Louis de Broglie's prediction that particles should display the properties of waves that have a wavelength ( ) equal to the ratio of the Planck constant ( h ) to the momentum ( p ) of the particle; that is

George Paget Thomson was born in 1892 at Cambridge, the son of the late Sir J J. Thomson (then Professor of Physics at Cambridge University ), a Nobel Prize winner who, more than anyone else, was responsible for the discovery of the electron, and Rose Elisabeth Paget, daughter of the late Sir George Paget, Regius Professor of Medicine at Cambridge.
George Thomson went to school in Cambridge, and then up to the University. As an undergraduate at Trinity College he took mathematics followed by physics, and had done a year's research under his father when the 1914-1918 war broke out.
He joined the Queen's Regiment of Infantry as a Subaltern and served for a short time in France, but returned to work on the stability of aeroplanes and other aerodynamical problems at Farnborough, and continued to work on this kind of problem at various establishments throughout the war, apart from eight months in the United States attached to the British War Mission.
After the war he spent three years as Fellow and Lecturer at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge

By courtesy of the National Portrait Gallery, London in full SIR JOSEPH JOHN THOMSON (b. Dec. 18, 1856, Cheetham Hill, near Manchester, Eng.d. Aug. 30, 1940, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire), English physicist who helped revolutionize the knowledge of atomic structure by his discovery of the electron (1897). He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1906 and was knighted in 1908.
    Education and early career.
Thomson was the son of a bookseller in a suburb of Manchester. When he was only 14, he entered Owens College, now the Victoria University of Manchester. He was fortunate in that, in contrast with most colleges at the time, Owens provided some courses in experimental physics. In 1876 he obtained a scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he remained for the rest of his life. After taking his B.A. degree in mathematics in 1880, the opportunity of doing experimental research drew him to the Cavendish Laboratory. He began also to develop the theory of electromagnetism. As set forth by James Clerk Maxwell, electricity and magnetism were interrelated; quantitative changes in one produced corresponding changes in the other. Prompt recognition of Thomson's achievement by the scientific community came in 1884, with his election as a fellow of the Royal Society of London and appointment to the chair of physics at the Cavendish Laboratory. Thomson entered physics at a critical point in its history. Following the great discoveries of the 19th century in electricity, magnetism, and thermodynamics, many physicists in the 1880s were saying that their science was coming to an end like an exhausted mine. By 1900, however, only elderly conservatives held this view, and by 1914 a new physics was in existence, which raised, indeed, more questions than it could answer. The new physics was wildly exciting to those who, lucky enough to be engaged in it, saw its boundless possibilities. Probably not more than a half dozen great physicists were associated with this change. Although not everyone would have listed the same names, the majority of those qualified to judge would have included Thomson.

Joseph John Thomson was born in Cheetham Hill, a suburb of Manchester on December 18, 1856. He enrolled at Owens College, Manchester, in 1870, and in 1876 entered Trinity College Cambridge as a minor scholar. He became a Fellow of Trinity College in 1880, when he was Second Wrangler and Second Smith's Prizeman, and he remained a member of the College for the rest of his life, becoming Lecturer in 1883 and Master in 1918. He was Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics at Cambridge, where he succeeded Lord Rayleigh , from 1884 to 1918 and Honorary Professor of Physics, Cambridge and Royal Institution , London.
Thomson's early interest in atomic structure was reflected in his Treatise on the Motion of Vortex Rings which won him the Adams Prize in 1884. His Application of Dynamics to Physics and Chemistry appeared in 1886, and in 1892 he had his Notes on Recent Researches in Electricity and Magnetism published. This latter work covered results obtained subsequent to the appearance of James Clerk Maxwell's famous "Treatise" and it is often referred to as "the third volume of Maxwell". Thomson co-operated with Professor J. H. Poynting in a four-volume textbook of physics, Properties of Matter and in 1895 he produced Elements of the Mathematical Theory of Electricity and Magnetism
