[Return to the Table of Contents] Register of the Records of the AMERICAN FRIENDS SERVICE COMMITTEE REFUGEE CASE FILES 176 ft. MSS 15 The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies 18 South 7 th Street Philadelphia, PA 19106 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) was founded in 1917 and was a presence in Europe well before the demands made upon it by World War Two. AFSC workers began helping individuals to leave Germany through AFSC Centers already in existence in Germany as early as 1931. AFSC headquarters staff began to help coordinate aid for refugees from Nazism during the mid 1930s, and a Refugee Service Committee was formed in 1938. In 1939 this was combined with the Committee on Spain, which with the cessation of the Spanish Civil War had shifted its focus from distributing to both sides of the conflict to primarily aiding the Loyalist refugees. In addition to working closely with groups in France, Germany, and England to coordinate rescue efforts and reunite family members, AFSC staff worked to influence legislation in the United States which would affect immigrants and potential immigrants. Much of this effort was concentrated on liberalizing immigration quotas. AFSCsponsored services for immigrants upon their arrival in the United States included a variety of camps and workshops aimed at promoting cultural adjustment through vocational training and courses in English, American civics, and social customs. The AFSC developed a placement service to help the new immigrants find jobs.

Gay Couples, Faith and the Law - American Friends Service Committee Provides a Chance to Turn Debate into Dialogue
PHILADELPHIA, May. 14 /PRNewswire/ PHILADELPHIA, May 14 /PRNewswire/ How do you define marriage? Is it a matter for governments or faith communities to decide? Should there be legal limitations on who can marry, or should it be a right shared by all? Communities of faith all over the United States are grappling with questions about marriage and the place of lesbian and gay people in our faith communities and in the eyes of the law. That's why the American Friends Service Committee's Peace Building Dialogues were created. Peace Building Dialogues are an online community where faith and spiritual communities can discuss this issue in the same spirit of understanding we bring to our own observance. The dialogues are a chance for ordinary people to bring their perspectives to an issue that has been dominated by advocates, pundits and politicians. The questions at the center of the marriage debate confront us in our homes and our places of worship. Only as family members and people of faith can we tackle these questions and search our own hearts for answers.

ACLU of Colorado Legal Department Docket
Case Name: American Friends Service Committee v. City and County of Denver
Case Number: 02-N-0740, United States District Court, District of Colorado
ACLU Case Number:
Description:
On March 11, 2002, the ACLU of Colorado held a news conference in which it disclosed documents that revealed the existence of the Denver Police Department's "Spy Files." The documents showed that Denver police were monitoring and recording the peaceful protest activities of Denver-area residents and keeping files on the expressive activities of law-abiding advocacy organizations, in many cases falsely labeling them as "criminal extremist." Later that month, the ACLU filed this class action lawsuit on behalf of three organizations and three individuals who were the subjects of "Spy Files." Instead of seeking monetary compensation, the lawsuit seeks new policies and practices and remedies for past abuses. Issues: Freedom of speech; right to petition; police practices; right of privacy

American Friends Service Committee, Tokyo, e_report#8, June 2001 Dear friends:
The situation in East Asia has changed considerably since we moved to Japan
three years ago. After several years of cautious optimism, we are watching
as the new U.S. administration presses forward with a new hard-line policy.
For an analysis of the new Bush policy in East Asia, please see Karin Lee's
essay on our website (http://www.afsc.org/intl/asia/eastasia.htm)
In the midst of the Bush administration's unilateral zeal, there have still
been positive developments. In South Korea, progress continues to be made
on addressing the impact of US troops in Korea. Fourteen Korean villagers
living in Maehyang-ri, next to the US Air Force Kooni training range, filed
a lawsuit seeking damages for harm and injuries suffered due to proximity to bombing practice. In April 2001, a Seoul court decided in their favor. Although the Court holds the Korean government not the US military liable for the modest settlement of approximately $100,000, the practices of US
