Since 1917, the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) has worked with people of many religious and ethical traditions to affirm the dignity and promise of every individual, to relieve the suffering of war and poverty, to advance the cause of peace and reconciliation, and to promote justice through nonviolent social change. The work of the AFSC is rooted in the spiritual insight of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The Connecticut program works on a broad peace agenda in the state, with special attention to the issue of converting Connecticut's heavy military production to industry that supports a stable and peaceful world. The program also works with a state-wide coalition to oppose the death penalty.

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a Quaker organization which works for social justice peace and reconciliation, abolition of the death penalty , and human rights , and provides humanitarian relief. The group was founded in as a combined effort by all three American branches of the Religious Society of Friends (commonly known as the Quakers ) and assisted civilian victims of war Because Quakers oppose violence in all of its forms and therefore refuse to serve in the military , the AFSC's original mission was to provide conscientious objectors (COs) to war with a constructive alternative to military service. In it received the Nobel Peace Prize along with the British Friends Service Council on behalf of Quakers worldwide. Today the AFSC has more than 200 staff working in dozens of programs throughout the United States and also works in 22 other nations, Its international programs often work in conjunction with the Canadian Friends Service Committee, Quaker Peace and Social Witness (formerly the British Friends Service Council), and Quaker Service Australia. In April days after the United Stated joined World War I and declared war on Germany and its allies a group of Quakers met in Philadelphia to discuss the fact that a military draft would soon start and would affect members of pacifist churches such as Quakers

John W. Haigis, Media Assistant, (215) 241-7056 PHILADELPHIA, PA— The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) today hailed the landmark June 26, 2003, decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Lawrence and Garner v. Texas as an historic step forward in the struggle for legal equality for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGBT) people. The ruling strikes down the Texas Homosexual Conduct Act, which criminalizes private sexual behavior between consenting adults who are lesbian, gay, or bisexual. Texas does not criminalize private sexual behavior between consenting heterosexual adults. The ruling also overturns sodomy laws in other states and the Court’s 1986 Bowers v. Hardwick

MSS 15 The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies 18 South 7 th Street Philadelphia, PA 19106 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) was founded in 1917 and was a presence in Europe well before the demands made upon it by World War Two. AFSC workers began helping individuals to leave Germany through AFSC Centers already in existence in Germany as early as 1931. AFSC headquarters staff began to help coordinate aid for refugees from Nazism during the mid 1930s, and a Refugee Service Committee was formed in 1938. In 1939 this was combined with the Committee on Spain, which with the cessation of the Spanish Civil War had shifted its focus from distributing to both sides of the conflict to primarily aiding the Loyalist refugees. In addition to working closely with groups in France, Germany, and England to coordinate rescue efforts and reunite family members, AFSC staff worked to influence legislation in the United States which would affect immigrants and potential immigrants. Much of this effort was concentrated on liberalizing immigration quotas. AFSCsponsored services for immigrants upon their arrival in the United States included a variety of camps and workshops aimed at promoting cultural adjustment through vocational training and courses in English, American civics, and social customs. The AFSC developed a placement service to help the new immigrants find jobs.

Print View Gift Strategy Using Closely Held Stock At first, the idea of donating some of your closely held stock may sound a bit strange. After all, how could American Friends Service Committee, or any other charitable institution, benefit from such a gift? And why in the world would you want to give up stock in your own company?
Believe it or not, both parties can reap major benefits from such a contribution. Obviously, we're looking for financial support. And presumably you could benefit from a substantial tax deduction.
But like other owners of closely held stock, you want to maintain control of your company. Perhaps you founded the business or acquired it from your family, and you don't want to give it up. The stock probably has appreciated in value. Maybe your company doesn't pay any dividends.
Eat Your Cake and Have It, Too
Let's assume you're unable to make a substantial cash contribution out of your own pocket, but there is cash in the corporation from retained earnings. These have been taxed on the corporate level and, if distributed as dividends, would be taxed again on the individual level.
You cannot or will not sell the closely held stock to the public, but you decide to give some shares to AFSC. We then present the stock to your corporation for redemption. This redemption can be accomplished by using retained earnings for the purchase, letting AFSC receive much-needed funds.

Critical Breakdown - American Friends Service Committee SPECIAL PROJECT 2003 Critical Breakdown is promoting young people as powerful resources for creative new solutions to problems affecting their own lives and communities. It is a place where they can explore new solutions to the conflicts they experience and a place where class, gender, race, sexual orientation, age and other identifications are viewed not as marks of division but as windows to a full and broad range of perspectives on life. As an alcohol-and drug-free open microphone venue where inner-city, low income, marginalized young people explore themes of social activism, political consciousness, and non-violence, Critical Breakdown uses socially conscious performance art such as hip hop, spoken word, and dance to attract a diverse group of young people. They also focus on leadership development and outreach to Boston youth who are underserved by more traditional youth programs. They currently serve over 200 young people each month, mostly from Boston’s neighborhoods of Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Roxbury and the South End. Based on a belief in the dignity and worth of every human being as conceived by the American Friends Service Committee, Critical Breakdown embraces this ideal and fosters the development of young people to examine their experiences with injustice and violence, encourage youth to see themselves as powerful agents of change and to build trust and respect between and among different neighborhoods, races, ethnicities and class groups. If you like their work, they need your support to continue. Please give.
