American surgeon and pioneer in cardiac transplantation. He launched the clinical heart transplantation program at Stanford in 1967 and devoted the following two decades to studying the clinical, physiological and pathological events following heart transplantation. On Jan. 6, 1968, at the Stanford Medical Center, Stanford, Calif., performed the first adult heart transplant in the United States. The 54-year-old recipient, whose heart had been damaged by virus infection, survived 15 days following surgery. Shumway's surgical team subsequently performed many other heart-transplant operations. Shumway's other major achievements included such open-heart surgery as the transplantation of valves. Alec Zino

Portuguese ornithologist and conservationist who gave his name to Zino's petrel , Europe's rarest breeding bird. Only perhaps 45 mating pairs of the Zino's petrel ( Pterodroma madeira remain on the island of Madeira, south-west of Portugal, where this small black and white seabird breeds. The abundance population of the bird started to decline with the arrival of settlers (1419). By mid-20th century it was thought extinct. Zino, a successful businessman and native of Madeira, devoted much of the second half of his life to conservation. After searching, he re-discovered a small colony of the bird, in Jun 1969. Therafter, he

American virologist who in 1975 shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with his former professor Renato Dulbecco and another of Dulbecco's students, David Baltimore, for his codiscovery of the enzyme reverse transcriptase. In 1961, Temin's formed a provirus hypothesis that cancer cells affect genetic material. The protein coat of certain viruses contains an enzyme that facilitates the copying of viral genes into the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of the host cell. In 1970 he and Baltimore both independently isolated the enzyme, now called reverse transcriptase. The viruses that contain the enzyme are known as retroviruses. Temin also investigated how genetic information in the provirus transforms a normal animal cell into a tumor cell. Ross Taylor

Born 10 Dec 1932; died 24 Oct 2003.
(Robert Murray) Ross Taylor was a Scottish transplant surgeon who pioneered the technique of kidney transplantation in the U.K. and made more than 2,000 kidney transplants since 1967 when he was part of the team that completed the first kidney transplant to be undertaken in the north of England. Acknowledged worldwide as an expert in his field, he trained many of the leading practitioners. At the time of his death, five of the principal transplant centres in Britain were led by surgeons he had mentored. Taylor was active not only in the ethical and moral aspects, but also in fundraising and developing support for transplant recipients. For 15 years he was chairman of the annual

Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research Howard M. Temin Obituary The following is an excerpt of the obituary on Dr. Temin published by the New York Times on Friday, February 11, 1994.
Dr. Howard M. Temin, a cancer researcher, who won the Nobel Prize for discovering an enzyme, reverse transcriptase, that overturned a central tenet of molecular biology, died of lung cancer Wednesday, at his home in Madison, Wis. He was 59. His lung cancer, adenocarcinoma, was a type not linked to smoking. Dr. Temin was an ardent crusader against smoking, even admonishing members of the audience at the Nobel Prize ceremony for smoking when he was being honored for his efforts to combat cancer.
The enzyme Dr. Temin discovered, reverse transcriptase later was critical in identifying the AIDS virus. It also became the underpinning of much of the biotechnology industry and was crucial in producing drugs like human insulin and tpa, a clot-dissolving agent that stops heart attacks in progress.
